The roller coaster that has been the Rockies season had another high moment Sunday afternoon at 20th & Blake. The Rockies, who have been plagued by inconsistency, once again found themselves in a close game after giving up a lead late in the game. However, the never-quit Rockies put up a three spot on the scoreboard in the ninth to tie it and won it in the ninth on a Dexter Fowler walk-off single.
Juan Nicasio was dealing, having pitched 5 1/3 perfect innings with seven strikeouts. His location was pinpoint and his pitch selection was excellent. Then, on a 2-2 pitch Nick Hundley went deep to break up the perfect game and put the Padres on the board. After allowing Hundley's home run, Nicasio gave up three straight singles before working his way out of the sixth. Nicasio's final line: six innings, two runs, four hits, one walk, and seven strikeouts. Still, a very solid outing from Nicasio.
Edgmer Escalona came in to pitch the seventh and gave up a solo home run to Cameron Maybin and a two-run home run to Mark Kotsay before leaving with an undisclosed injury. In the eighth, usually reliable Matt Belisle surrendered two runs and the Rockies trailed 7-4 heading to the ninth, setting the stage for Carlos Gonzalez and eventually Dexter Fowler.
Three straight one out singles from Jonathan Herrera, Tyler Colvin and Dexter Fowler brought the score to 7-5. After an Eric Young Jr. strike out, Carlos Gonzalez laced a two RBI double on an 0-2 pitch to right field to tie the game at 7. The Padres passed on Tulo and elected to face Arenado who flew out to right to end the ninth.
Rex Brothers pitched a scoreless 10th and picked up the win, thanks to Dexter Fowler's aforementioned walk-off single. Fowler finished 4-for-6 on the day and raised his average to .304.
Game notes: Troy Tulowitzki hit his 16th home run of the year in the first...Rex Brothers has now pitched 24 1/3 straight scoreless innings spanning 27 appearances...Dexter Fowler is hitting .436 over his last 10 games...Carlos Gonzalez robbed another home run and made several outstanding catches in LF...Nolan Arenado had two more defensive gems at 3B
