Carlos Gonzalez injury: Slugger might deal with finger pain all season

USA TODAY Sports

Carlos Gonzalez will miss his 3rd straight game today with a sprained right middle finger. He spoke to media this morning about the injury.

DENVER -- Rockies All-Star outfielder Carlos Gonzalez is not in Colorado's lineup for the 3rd straight game with a sprained right middle finger he sustained while swinging the bat as the Rockies conclude a 10 game homestand against the Milwaukee Brewers. Gonzalez spoke to the media about the injury this morning.

"It's feeling better, but the swelling has stayed the same, I'm not sure why, I don't think it's gonna go down," Gonzalez said. "I thought I was gonna be in (the lineup) today. I just get ready for playing late in the game -- hopefully I'll start in Atlanta."

Carlos talked about the possible scenarios for him and his finger. "We've been thinking about a lot of different scenarios, like a cortisone shot, but they said no because that will make my tendon more fragile -- it might break," said Gonzalez. "Then they talked about putting me on the DL -- I asked (the doctor) 'what if I rest 15 days, am I gonna feel better?', then he goes, 'No, you're gonna feel the same'."

In other words, CarGo's finger injury isn't going away any time soon folks. At a time when the Rockies need his big bat more than ever, that's a tough blow for a team struggling offensively right now. The left-handed outfielder leads the NL with 26 home runs, but if he has to deal with this nagging finger issue the rest of the season, both that position and the fate of the Rockies' offense may be in jeopardy.
