The game of baseball played out almost exactly like it was supposed to on Saturday night in Miami, Fla.
That's not necessarily a bad thing, it just is what it is. Miami Marlins rookie sensation Jose Fernandez allowed just four hits in seven scoreless innings, fanning eight batters en route to a 3-0 victory over the Colorado Rockies.
Sure, the Rockies were only able to muster up four hits -- all of which came from the bats of Todd Helton and Michael Cuddyer, who are a combined 74 years old -- but it wasn't the awful, agonizing affair that some were predicting. Fernandez was special to watch, and Rockies starter Jeff Manship pitched better than I, or probably anyone else, expected.
Manship got squared up pretty good in the fourth inning, allowing a double to Giancarlo Stanton followed by run-scoring hits to Ed Lucas and Adeiny Hechevarria and a sacrifice fly to Jake Marisnick to fall into a 3-0 hole. However, he allowed only four hits himself, along with a pair of walks in six efficient innings. On most nights, that would have been good enough for a win, but not with Fernandez opposing him (I mean, just look at this play).
Rob Scahill worked two scoreless and hitless innings of relief in his first appearance since being recalled on Friday.
The two teams combined for just eight hits, but Miami's obviously came when it counted. Perhaps that's the biggest indictment on Manship; that he just couldn't get a strikeout when he needed one.
Alas, the Rockies have a solid shot at their first road series win in a month and a half on Sunday when Jorge De La Rosa takes the mound. Of course, it's a perfect opportunity for Walt Weiss to use a Sunday lineup; it's the tail-end of a long road trip, dudes will be tired and Troy Tulowitzki might have tweaked something while striking out against Fernandez. He stayed in the game, so it's probably nothing, but I'm sure we'll hear more on that as the days progress.
