Know Your Foe: Giants come to Colorado

Barry Zito takes on the Rockies tonight. - Bob Stanton-USA TODAY Sports

The Rockies kick off a nine-game homestand against the San Francisco Giants.

The San Francisco Giants come to Coors Field this week as both the defending World Series champions and the last place team in the NL West. No, 2013 has not gone as planned for the Giants, and the Rockies have a chance to push them further into the cellar over the course of three games at Coors Field.

The Giants have faltered both offensively and on the mound this season, with just one starter, Madison Bumgarner, having an ERA below 4.00 and only three players with double-digit home runs this season.

Key to San Francisco's troubles this season have been the usually reliable Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum (neither of whom will pitch at Coors this week). Cain in particular has struggled, posting a career-high 4.43 ERA in 26 starts and 156 1/3 innings this year. Lincecum's struggles from 2012 carried over to 2013 as well, as he has compiled a 4.55 ERA and 1.32 WHIP in 158 1/3 innings.

Brandon Belt and Hunter Pence share the Giants' home run lead this season with 15 apiece. However, neither of them is hitting over .280 and they have combined to drive in just 114 runs between them. Pablo Sandoval has also struggled this season, with just a .717 OPS and nine home runs in 2013.

The Giants enter the series with a record of 58-72 and are 7-6 against the Rockies this season.

2013 - Buster Posey .307 .376 .480

While he has not put up the MVP numbers he did in 2012, Buster Posey is having another strong season this year. The Giants' catcher has an .856 OPS this season with 14 home runs and a team-high 65 RBI. He leads his team with an OPS+ of 148 and 4.6 bWAR and has started 100 of the Giants' 130 games behind the plate. He may not be the league MVP this season, but he certainly has been the Giants' MVP in 2013.

2013 - Barry Zito 4-9 5.63 1.72 80 50

Barry Zito has been in and out of the Giants' rotation over the past two months, but will get the start in the series opener tonight. In his Giants career, Zito has a 3.06 ERA in 125 innings against the Rockies and a 4.82 ERA in 999 innings against everyone else, though his Coors Field ERA is 3.96 in his career. Zito's 5.63 ERA is his highest in a season in which he has pitched at least 100 innings.

The Rockies have a chance to both solidify third place in the NL West and have a winning record for the season against a Giants team that is just 29-47 since the beginning of June. It is a chance they would be wise to take.
