Rockies prospect report, 8/28: Tyler Chatwood pitches well in rehab start

Doug Pensinger

Tyler Chatwood kept his opponents quiet during his rehab stint, but the Sky Sox and the 51's played a thriller in the late innings.

Colorado Springs, W 13-12 (65-71)
The Sky Sox held a 6-1 lead entering the seventh inning, which was when neither side could prevent the runs from flowing. In the top of the seventh, Las Vegas' Brandon Hicks tripled in a run and then scored on Dan Houston's wild pitch. Third baseman Drew Garcia had a fielding error to allow a third run.

Garcia, though, gave temporary breathing room with a three-run triple in the bottom of the inning. Manny Corpas, who received the win, allowed five runs in the top of the eighth, including a three-run homer to my elementary school friend Mike Baxter, to tie the game at nine.

Hernan Iribarren hit a two-run homer (1) to break the tie in the bottom of the inning. Josh Rutledge added a sac fly and Ben Paulsen launched his 16th homer. Steven Hensley nearly gave the lead away in the top of the ninth, allowing three runs, but he induced a grounder to second to end the game.

Tyler Chatwood allowed one run on five hits and two walks over 5⅓ innings. He struck out four and finished with an 8-1 GO-FO.

Tulsa, L 5-1 (64-68)
Eddie Butler allowed an RBI triple in the bottom of the second, his only real blemish in 4⅔ innings. He surrendered four hits, struck out four and walked three. He finished with an 8-0 GO-FO and threw 50 of his 81 pitches for strikes.

Mike Marbry pitched the next 1⅓ innings, holding his inherited runners on base. Joe Gardner, though, let the game slip away in the eighth by allowing four runs (one scored as an inherited runner when Kenny Roberts was on the mound).

Kyle Parker doubled in the Drillers' only run of the game and walked twice. Delta Cleary and Cristhian Adames each had two hits.

Modesto, W 8-0 (71-63)
Tyler Gagnon fired off eight scoreless innings of seven-hit ball, striking out six and walking one. Ryan Arrowood held the shutout with a clean ninth.

Taylor Featherston paced the offense with two triples and two RBI; Trevor Story hit a two-run triple; and Will Swanner collected two doubles, scored twice, and drove in a run.

Asheville, L 5-2 (61-70)
Matt Carasiti allowed four runs on eight hits and two walks over 6⅓ innings, three of the runs scoring in the first inning. After three consecutive singles started the bottom of the first, a fourth plated the first two runs of the game. The next three at-bats resulted in three outs, but the middle one pushed the third run across home plate.

Tourists 1B David Bergin, who went 3-for-4, hit a double to start the second inning and scored on Dillon Thomas' single. Bergin scored a second time in the fourth inning, but Thomas, who was on first, attempted to reach third on the same play, only to be thrown out from center field.

Grand Junction, L 8-4 (28-36)
Alex Balog had some shoddy defense behind him on Tuesday night, with SS Dom Nunez and 3B Ryan McMahon each committing a fielding error during his six innings on the mound. Balog had an error on a pickoff as well. That's how he allowed six runs but only one earned. Three of the runs were hit via the long ball: a two-run shot in the first and a solo shot in the third. He struck out three and had an 11-3 GO-FO.

Peter Tago struck out three in his two innings of relief and allowed one of his two runs on a homer.

McMahon collected two hits, walked once, and scored a run.
