MLB scores: Rockies squander early opportunities en route to 5-2 loss to Pirates

Jorge De La Rosa struggled again, but this time, the Rockies' offense gave him anything but a boatload of runs to work with.

Things were looking pretty good for the Colorado Rockies during the top of the first inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday night.

DJ LeMahieu ripped a one-out single to left field and Troy Tulowitzki followed with a walk. Then, with Michael Cuddyer at the plate, both runners advanced on a wild pitch by Francisco Liriano, who was seemed erratic at best.

It all went downhill from there, which can almost be expected from this team at this point in the season.

First, Cuddyer struck out and Rosario ended the inning with a groundout. Then, two innings later, the Rockies nearly repeated the situation and saw the same result. That's as close as they would get to scoring against Liriano, who tossed seven shutout innings and reduced the effect of his five walks by striking out seven batters and allowing just two hits.

Jorge De La Rosa, on the other hand, struggled with inefficiency through four innings. He allowed three runs on six hits and a pair of walks before exiting the game having thrown 91 pitches. De La Rosa downplayed the effect his sore thumb had on the unimpressive outing to reporters after the game, but it's hard to believe that the stockpile of nagging injuries hanging around De La Rosa isn't bothering him.

The Rockies broke through with two runs in a third of an inning against Tony Watson, but that was the only bit of offense they were able to muster up in front of 38,424 fans at PNC Park.

Troy Tulowitzki went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and an RBI. Meanwhile, Michael Cuddyer and Wilin Rosario combined to go 1-for-8 with 10 runners left on base.

The rubber match of the three-game series between the Rockies and Pirates takes place on Sunday at 11:35 a.m. MT. Juan Nicasio takes the hill for the Rox opposite hard-luck A.J. Burnett, who is 4-7 with a 2.86 ERA.
