Saturday Rockpile: Rockies finally win in Arizona

The Rockies shook hands after a game at Chase Field last night for just the second time in eight tries. - Christian Petersen

After losing five straight at Chase Field, mostly because of a lack of offense, the Rockies broke out for seven runs and a victory last night.

Up until last night, the Rockies had struggled mightily in Arizona in 2013, going just 1-6 and scoring 14 runs in seven games at Chase Field, nominally a hitter's park. Six of the 14 runs came in the team's only previous win in Arizona, a 6-3 triumph on April 26.

However, the Rockies' offense finally clicked in Arizona against Brandon McCarthy, who also pitched in the Rockies first win at Chase Field, in a 7-5 win. The seven runs equaled half the total they had scored in Arizona previously in 2013.

It wasn't just that the team had struggled to push across runs in Arizona, they had posted a miserable .273 OBP and .599 OPS in their first seven games in Arizona, striking out 53 times and walking just 16. They also hit at just a .216 clip. Those numbers are significantly below the Rockies' 2013 production at the other three NL West parks they travel to, all of which are noted pitchers' parks.

What remains to be seen is whether the Rockies have figured out their woes at Chase Field or simply figured out McCarthy. They will face another stiff test today as Wade Miley takes the mound for Arizona. This will be Miley's third start against Colorado, having allowed just one run in 12 1/3 innings in the first two.
