Things started bad and got worse Tuesday night for the Rockies as they fell behind 10-0 before losing 11-4 to the St. Louis Cardinals.
Juan Nicasio gave up a single run in each of the first two innings thanks to RBI singles from Yadier Molina and Matt Carpenter. The Rockies threatened in the bottom of the first, but failed to convert, meaning St. Louis had a 2-0 lead after two innings.
The third is when the Cardinals erupted, scoring six runs on seven hits against Nicasio and reliever Rob Scahill. The big blow came via Daniel Descalso, who had a two-run triple as St. Louis extended its lead to 8-0 after three innings. All six runs were charged to Nicasio, who gave up eight earned runs in 2 2/3 innings of work on the night.
Scahill did have runs charged to him in the fifth when he allowed a two-run home run to Matt Holliday, stretching the Cardinals' lead to 10-0.
The Rockies got on the board in the seventh against Cardinals reliever Carlos Martinez when Charlie Culberson drove in Charlie Blackmon and Josh Rutledge with a single. DJ LeMahieu and Michael Cuddyer had RBI hits later in the inning, cutting Colorado's defecit to 10-4.
The final run of the game came in the top of the ninth when Carpenter scored on Manny Corpas' wild pitch.
The two teams will play the third of their four-game set tomorrow night as Adam Wainwright takes on Tyler Chatwood.
