Thursday Rockpile: Rockies experiencing power outage

Dustin Bradford

The Rockies returned home this week after a tough road trip but have yet to find their home bats.

This September has not been a good month for the Rockies to hit home runs. Coming off a nine game road trip where they hit just four, one by Todd Helton and Charlie Culberson and two by Michael Cuddyer (in the same game), the team has not been able to get the big hit so far in the series against the Cardinals. Much of this can be contributed to losing hitters like Carlos Gonzalez, who still leads the team with 26, as well as injuries to Nolan Arenado (10) and Dexter Fowler (12). However, the Rockies still have other power hitters that haven't been able to produce lately.

Troy Tulowitzki, who was trending back up in August after his return from injury in July, has only three extra base hits this month and no home runs.  His last home run was August 20th, when he hit his second in as many games. The Baby Bull, who is ironically down with an injured calf, has a lone dinger on September 2nd. They are having their worst and second worst slugging months respectively.

Michael Cuddyer, the NL batting leader, had been picking up some of the slack but he is now likely to miss a few games with wrist and forearm injuries after diving for a ball Wednesday night. Even Todd Helton, who had seemingly found the fountain of power hitting youth in August, has not left the yard in nearly two weeks as his slugging percentage in September is the worst of the last three months.

The recent spat of injuries leaves Tulo and Helton as the only two hitters in the lineup with double digit home runs, with Dex or Cuddy likely to be the next to return. These two will need to find some power to help make the Rockies competitive the rest of this home stand and the last road trip to LA.
