Rockies OF Charlie Blackmon named NL Player of the Week

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Blackmon is hot to the touch this month, and he received national recognition for it on Monday.

Colorado Rockies outfielder Charlie Blackmon was named the National League Player of the Week on Monday after finishing 18-for-36 at the plate last week in seven games against the St. Louis Cardinals and Arizona Diamondbacks.

Blackmon had five doubles, a home run and five runs batted in during that stretch. He also crossed the plate six times. During the month of September, the 27-year-old lefty has been on fire, posting a .356/.371/.517 line in 89 plate appearances. The one caveat is that Blackmon, who is known for being an aggressive hitter, has walked only twice while striking out 17 times.

Blackmon might not be a better hitter than Brandon BeltCarson Cistulli (Belt's OPS+ sits at 141; Blackmon is only at 107), but the Georgia Tech alum is making a statement that he should be considered as a viable option to fill Michael Cuddyer's spot in right field next season, assuming Cuddy takes over for the departing Todd Helton at first base.

Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Alex Cobb earned honors in the American League.
