With no Rockpile this morning I figured I'd put together a run-down of the stuff we've been talking about THIS DAY IN HISTORY here on the Row. This trek through time will be enlightening, depressing, or quite possibly both.
Jan 9 2013 Rockpile - Hall of Fame Voting Revealed, No Inductions Expected - Jeff Aberle revealed his HOF ballot (and his process) and linked. Most of us were expecting Larry Walker to stay on the ballot, and he did. According to the off-topic that day, I had not yet watched The Wire, a problem that was rectified by the end of February.
Jan 9 2012 Rockpile - Being a Rockies' Fan Isn't Fair - The Tebow Broncos, despite being objectively a bad team (see footballoutsiders 2011 DVOA rankings, for example), made it into the playoffs and had eliminated Pittsburgh the night before, leading A-Mart (who was quite possibly Rox Girl) to ask where that kind of luck and good fortune was for the Rockies. The Rockpile also noted our lack of young players who appeared to be immediately ready, something that would sadly be realized over the course of the offseason. Muzia was interested in signing a Maholm type. That seems familiar.
Jan 9 2011 Rockpile - Avoid Getting Delusional About Depth - The Rays of Tampa Bay put together a pretty good season in 2010, counting on young players to make leaps and a deep farm system to replenish what the team lost every year. Rox Girl (who may have been Russ at this point) warned us not to just assume young players in the farm system would ALWAYS be there to make up for what was lost. Vinny Castilla retired from the Mexican-Pacific League and Mondo was still here.
Jan 9 2010 Rockpile - Giambi Not The Right Guy; Rockies Player Development Stuff - From the Rockpile: "Dave Krieger explains how Giambi doesn't really have place on the Rockies' 25-man roster for 2010."
This was after the 2009 season, so apart from Greg Reynolds, we definitely thought the org was doing a good job with the drafting/development of talent.
Let's ignore this Rockpile, I think.
Jan 9 2009 Rockpile - Thoroughbreds - Rox Girl linked to a Ringolsby column where stability and continuity in the front office was looked at as a positive, as it usually is in these cases. Rox Girl noted that the stability in the NL West front offices had lead to 11 top-10 draft selections in the last five years, so maybe it was not all it was cracked up to be. Also we wanted Brad Hawpe on team USA.
In 2008 we had a PuRPs list and we welcomed Pickaxe and Roll to the SBN community. It merged with Denver Stiffs 18 months later.
