Why I am a Rockies fan... Why AM I a Rockies Fan?

I don't really know.

I think it's because when I grew up in Aurora back in the day the Rockies didn't exist. And every Spring brought rumors and promise that a group would bring the MLB to Denver. And every year I dreamed of watching the likes of Thurmon Munson or Bucky Dent or Catfish Hunter or Rollie Fingers or you name the player, and he would be wearing the jersey with the name of MY city and it was the most wonderful and exciting thing I could imagine.

I LOVED baseball more than most things. I loved baseball even more than the Broncos going to the Super Bowl. Even more than my dream of marrying David Starsky (100% Starsky-girl) or living in Hawaii with Thomas Magnum. I would have burned every poster I had of Paul-Michael Glaser and Tom Selleck to have an MLB team in Colorado.

I had my own glove and would give it the Tulo treatment during every single Denver Bears game I listened to on the radio. I rooted for every player that ever wore a Bears (or Zephyrs) jersey to make it to The Show and by extension I became a fan of the Royals and the Expos. (R.I.P)

Then I grew up and went to college and moved to San Diego, and bam there was a legitimate MLB team in my own new backyard. So I started going to some Padres games and they were a ton of fun. But I felt a little guilty even though the Rockies didn't even exist #weird. The Padres had Tony Gwynn and those crazy ass brown and mustard jerseys that were so ugly they were cute. Best thing was I didn't have to cheer for the dirty filthy Dodgers or the Dirty Filthy Disgusting Giants.

Then the Rockies were born. My hometown had an MLB team. It didn't matter who they drafted or if they sucked, I was so excited for (and not just a little bit jealous) of the people of Denver and Colorado. And despite my relationship with the Padres, I decided to dump the Padres so I could go to prom with my dream date and we were together for quite awhile. But I cannot lie, long-distance relationships are hard. The Padres were closer, I could see them more often and my friends liked them. But the Rockies were always in the back of my mind.

Real-life issues had me drifting away from baseball for a few years but then in 2007 the Rockies started making that run to the WS and I was watching out of the corner of my eye. I decided, you know what, I'm all in with the Rockies again and I have never looked back. Brad Hawpe didn't hurt matters for me either...just sayin'.

So I guess I still don't really know exactly why I'm still a Rockies fan. Maybe I'm just a glutton for punishment. Or maybe I'm happy I didn't actually have to burn my Paul-Michael Glaser and Tom Selleck posters after all :).

TL;DR: ....Welllll hellllllooooo Carlos Gonzalez.
