Jeff, Always a Bridesmaid Never a Bride, Bridich

As baseball’s winter meetings wrapped up Thursday, Rockies’ fans held out hope that the team might make a couple of moves that would make the team better after its disastrous 2014 campaign. But new general manager, Jeff (always a bridesmaid, never a bride) Bridich, did his best to channel his inner Dan O’Dowd. That is tinker at the margins by trading a back-up infielder for a bullpen prospect (Jairo Diaz), talk the possibility of trading big names but never pulling the trigger (Cargo and Tulo), and pursuing the next in the long line of mediocre starting pitchers who will see their ERA soar over 6 at Coors Field (Dillon Gee). Oh, and did I mention they lost one of their top three pitching prospects in Daniel Winkler to the Atlanta Braves in the Rule 5 draft?

While the Cubs, Diamondbacks, White Sox, and Dodgers made bold moves attempting to make their teams better, the Rockies virtually stood pat. Meanwhile, the Oakland A’s conducted a fire sale. Did the Rockies even think about calling on Jeff Samardzija? One would’ve hoped that a bright, eager new GM would’ve come in with a plan to shake things up after three terrible seasons. But Bridich seems content on following in the shadow of his predecessor. Of course, this should not be a surprise, given that his opening press conference read like it was torn out of the O’Dowd playbook, right down to blaming the altitude for the team’s problems. Bridich even sounds like O’Dowd (Frank Caliendo couldn’t do a better impersonation).

Bridich’s inertia may pay off in the long run. The market for Tulo and Cargo may improve dramatically once they’ve proven they’re healthy. One of the team’s pitching prospects may develop into an ace. But Rockies’ fans are tired of waiting and watching the team chase moonbeams. It is too much to ask that this organization for once get creative instead of resting on its laurels waiting for the impossible?
