Rockies 14, Indians 6: Arenado hit by pitch, leaves early in rout

Colorado's 14-6 rout of Cleveland this afternoon was marred by the fact that starting third baseman Nolan Arenado had to leave the game early because he was hit in the left hand by a pitch. X-Rays were negative and per the Rockies he is day-to-day with a bone contusion on his hand.

After being routed by Cleveland last night 14-3, Colorado returned the favor in a big way to complete the split squad sweep for the day with a 14-6 victory over the Tribe. The big news though was that starting third baseman Nolan Arenado had to leave the game early after being hit in the left hand by a pitch in the 6th inning. Fortunately for Rockies fans, per Thomas Harding the X-Rays on the hand came back negative and Arenado is listed as day to day.

Nolan was 2-2 with two doubles on the day before getting hit, part of a 22 hit onslaught for the Rockies on the day. Tim Wheeler was the most explosive, going 3-3 with a three run homer off of former Rockie Josh Outman. Wheeler had replaced the man the Rockies traded Outman for, Drew Stubbs, who went 1-3 on the day. In other CF derby news, Corey Dickerson had himself a 3-6 day with a run and two RBI.

Ryan Wheeler and Paul Janish both added three hits apiece for Colorado, bringing their spring batting averages to .347 and .462 respectively. No, that's not a misprint - Paul Janish, Mr. All Glove No Bat, is hitting .462 in spring training. Oh, and some guy named Carlos Gonzalez added a 2-4 day while Justin Morneau added a single and two RBI. It was not a bad day all around for Colorado's offense.

Interestingly, the Rockies were actually down 1-0 entering the top of the 5th, but they poured it on after that, starting with a Jordan Pacheco two-run homer in the 5th. Colorado scored in every inning from the 5th to the 9th, including five run spurts in the 6th and 8th innings. Also of note was that PuRP 25 Max White made his debut in big league spring training. Unfortunately it wasn't a great display, as the young outfielder didn't put the ball in play in two plate appearances and made a throwing error in limited action.

On the mound, Jordan Lyles worked through 4 2/3 innings, allowing five runs (only two earned thanks to errors by Pacheco and Morneau) on five hits and three walks while striking out three. Adam Ottavino allowed a run on two hits in a relief inning, but NRI Chris Martin threw two scoreless innings and Manny Corpas added a clean 9th to sew up the victory.

Tomorrow afternoon the White Sox come to Salt River to face Tyler Chatwood and a slew of major league relievers.
