Rockies vs. Marlins preview: Colorado turns to Jordan Lyles to snap skid

Rick Scuteri-USA TODAY Sports

Colorado's likely going to need to hit well tonight to get into the "W" column.

The Rockies, who are still looking for their first win of 2014, will send Jordan Lyles to the hill to make his debut in purple pinstripes on Wednesday against the Marlins.

Lyles was optioned to Triple-A at the onset of the regular season but will officially be recalled to the Rockies today to replace Tyler Chatwood, who is headed to the disabled list with a hamstring injury. Lyles was OK this spring, posting a 3.18 ERA in 17 innings, but he's been among the worst starters in the game over the past three seasons, entering his tenure with the Rockies with a 5.35 career ERA.

Opposing Lyles will be Henderson Alvarez, whose decent 2013 campaign included a no-hitter. The 23-year-old Venezuelan right-hander posted a 3.59 ERA in 17 starts for Miami last season. He's not going to rack up the punch-outs (just 5.0 per nine innings a year ago), but he doesn't walk many batters either. The Rockies' hitters have to be careful not to get too aggressive, but should also realize that they're going to get pitches to hit.

Speaking of Rockies hitters, Jordan Pacheco gets his first start of the year tonight and Charlie Blackmon is back in centerfield. Everything else is as usual in the Colorado lineup.

First pitch from Marlins Park is slated for 5:10 p.m. ET, and the game can be seen on ROOT Sports.
