Yesterday the Rockies locked up their fourth straight home series victory, and today they will try to complete the sweep of the San Francisco Giants. Roll that sentence around with your morning coffee, and savor it a little bit. However the rest of 2014 shakes out, there has been some very enjoyable moments so far.
The Giants will turn to Matt Cain to try to keep that from happening. 2013 was Cain's worst season as a starter, putting up a 4 ERA and only 0.5 rWAR, but he's off to a fine start this year by posting a 2.88 ERA in four starts. Despite this, his record is 0 and 3. If you follow Grant Brisbee on twitter you'll know this sort of event is called a "Caining"; excellent pitching leading to a loss due to no run support. Madison Bumgarner got Cained yesterday.
The Rockies don't want to Cain Cain today; they want to Vogelsong him. A nice ten run blow out, yessiree, that'll do nicely.
Tyler Chatwood takes the bump for the Rockies, looking to continue his good start. His 2.77 ERA is sparkling, and the 0.69 BB/9 wonderful. If he keeps inducing ground balls and lets the defense do its thing, he can shorten up the game considerably.
Carlos Gonzalez is getting the day off. No word as of yet whether it's due to his knee issues or if it's just a mental health day; he has been fighting a pretty tough slump. Corey Dickerson takes over left field duties in his absence, and Brandon Barnes is again in right for Cuddyer. Justin Morneau is hitting cleanup for the first time this season, and it's well deserved. Charlie Blackmon is back in his customary leadoff spot after a rare off day yesterday.
