The not-quite game wrap: Giants 2, Rockies 2

Doug Pensinger

Giants 2, Rockies 2 with only 35 outs down, at least 16 more to go.

In what could technically be considered the longest game in club history, the Rockies finished tonight with one on and a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning due to rain.  With the schedule the way it is, this game may not be finished until Thursday, September 4, meaning it will be somewhere over 105 days from when this game started until its conclusion.

In a game that was delayed and then stopped by two separate rain delays, the Rockies looked good before the first break and then just ok after it.  Jorge De La Rosa was again strong, eliminating the only base runner he allowed via a walk with a double play in the first inning and then striking out the side in what turned out to be his final inning in the third.  The Rockies offense was also able to come through early against Tim Hudson.  The Rockies loaded the bases with two outs in the first and then were able to score the first run of the game in the second with a two out walk and then a two out RBI infield single from Michael Cuddyer.  The Rockies even had two base runners to lead off their half of the third inning but failed to score due to a lineout and then a double play.

When play resumed after 82 minutes of rain delay, Tommy Kahnle promptly gave the lead to the Giants with a homerun by Hunter Pence and an RBI double by Pablo Sandoval.  Colorado's offense again loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth but were unable to score.  The team had to use a double play to score and tie the game in the bottom of the fifth after back to back singles from Nolan Arenado and Corey Dickerson began the inning to put runners on first and third.

No one scored in the sixth inning for the Giants and Michael Cuddyer produced a two out single just before the game was stopped the second time due to rain.  After 84 minutes of delay the second time, it was decided that the rest of this game will have to be played on a later date.
