2014 Home Run Derby: Troy Tulowitzki advances to 2nd round

Tulo moved on while teammate Justin Morneau lost in a swing-off.

Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki advanced to the second round of the 2014 Home Run Derby on Monday by hitting four home runs in his first trip to the plate.

Tulowitzki was beaten in the NL by only Giancarlo Stanton, who hit six home runs, one of which nearly left the ballpark. Tulo will take on Todd Frazier, who hit two homers and then another in a swing-off against Rockies first baseman Justin Morneau, in Round 2.

Morneau smacked a couple of homers in the first round but went 0-for-3 in the swing-off. The event as a whole was still a resounding success for Morneau, who made his first trip back to Minneapolis since the Twins traded him last summer. Fans at Target Field showed their appreciation for Morneau during introductions:

Stanton and Jose Bautista moved directly to the third round by virtue of leading their respective leagues. Bautisto topped all contestants with 10 dingers in the first round. Adam Jones and Yoenis Cespedes, who defeated teammate Josh Donaldson in a swing-off, advanced to the second round on the AL side.
