Rockies lefty Tyler Matzek pitched the best game of his young big league career and was provided with plenty of run support as the Rockies beat the Pirates, 8-1.
Matzek pitched seven shutout innings, allowing three hits and walking two while striking out three. He threw 93 pitches, 57 for strikes and went 1-for-2 with a walk at the plate.
The Rockies got on the board in the third against the Pirates' Jeff Locke when Josh Rutledge singled home Charlie Blackmon to give Colorado a 1-0 lead. That lead was doubled in the fourth on Drew Stubbs' 11th home run of the season. However, Stubbed rolled his ankle on the home run trot and had to leave the game.
Colorado tacked on another pair of runs in the fifth, as Nolan Arenado drove home Matzek with one of his three hits the night after being benched for a lack of hustle and Stubbs' replacement, Corey Dickerson, plated Rutledge on a ground out to give the Rockies a 4-0 lead.
It was still 4-0 in the seventh when Arenado and Dickerson hit a pair of solo home runs, extending the Rockies lead to 6-0 and finally chasing Locke from the game. The Rockies got their last two runs in the eighth when Rutledge's two-run single scored DJ LeMahieu and Ben Paulsen.
Ike Davis hit a solo home run against reliever Brooks Brown in the ninth for Pittsburgh's only run of the game.
The Rockies will look for their fourth straight win tomorrow afternoon as Franklin Morales takes on Edinson Volquez at 2:05 p.m.
