Jon Gray put together six solid innings, but the Rockies bullpen couldn’t hold on as the Rockies lost to the Mets 4-2.
Gray came out firing bullets to the leadoff hitter in Curtis Granderson, striking him out on four fastballs: 93 mph, 95 mph, 96 mph, and 95 mph. He finished off the inning with a two-pitch groundout and a three-pitch fly out. Gray threw nine pitches in the first inning tonight compared to 33 in the opening frame of his debut.
Gray made quick work of Lucas Duda to kick off the second inning, striking him out on three pitches: 85 mph changeup, 95 mph fastball, 96 mph fastball. Gray got Kelly Johnson to fly out, but then left a fastball out over the plate and Travis d'Arnaud made him pay with solo shot to left field. Gray showed the ability to bounce back as he quickly got Michael Conforto to fly out to center field on one pitch.
Jon Niese led off the next inning, and Gray didn't let off the gas pedal. Gray reached and back and blew three fastballs right by him: 93 mph, 96 mph, and 97 mph. This type of velocity hasn't been seen from a Rockies pitcher since the Ubaldo Jimenez days. Gray walked Ruben Tejada, his first of the game, then got the final two outs on just four pitches.
The Rockies were able to get on the board when, unsurprisingly, Carlos Gonzalez hit a two-run opposite field bomb to put the Rockies ahead 2-1. The momentum carried Gray to another quick inning, as he threw just eight pitches to retire the side.
In the fifth, Gray faced some difficult challenges. After retiring the first two batters, Gray walked the opposing pitcher after getting him down to two strikes. A visibly frustrated Gray on the mound then allowed an infield hit (although it was ruled an error on DJ LeMahieu for some reason) and followed with a wild pitch to put runners on second and third with two outs. Gray buckled down and got Curtis Granderson to pop up in the infield with a 97 mph fastball up in the zone.
The sixth and final inning for Gray ended on a good note. He retired the final three batters on 13 pitches, which included a strikeout of Yoenis Cespedes.
Gray threw 75 pitches, 48 for strikes, over six innings of work. He allowed just one run on a solo homer, while striking out five and walking two. Gray was in line for his first career win.
Unfortunately, the bullpen had other plans.
After Justin Miller loaded the bases, Boone Logan hit Curtis Granderson with a slider to allow the tying run to score. Daniel Murphy followed up with a two-run single to give the Mets a 4-2 lead.
Jeurys Familia came in and closed things out, capping off the Mets' comeback.
It was a loss for the Rockies, but another big step forward in the development of Jon Gray.
