Jon Gray carried the right attitude into his start against the New York Mets on Friday night.
Between starts, the 24-year-old right-hander said he wasn't worried about carrying his success on the road to Coors Field, where he's struggled to produce good results during his brief career. With the defending National League champions in town, Gray finally righted the ship.
The rookie hurler tossed seven innings of two-run ball, striking out eight Mets hitters en route to his first big league victory, a 5-2 win over a team that came into the game with 11 consecutive wins over the Colorado Rockies. It was a phenomenal performance that left Rox fans with a positive feeling about the future.
Gray, after striking out the side in the first, rebounded from a rough second inning in which he walked a batter and hit another, then allowed a two-run double to put the Rox in an early hole. He wound up throwing 71 of 105 pitches for strikes and didn't allow another walk. Gray also picked up his first major league hit and scored the go-ahead run.
Fellow rookie Trevor Story helped his teammate by lacing a pair of doubles and driving in the decisive run. Charlie Blackmon added three hits from atop the lineup and DJ LeMahieu pitched in two extra-base hits.
Carlos Estevez, who should be striking out hitters alongside Gray at 20th and Blake for years to come, whiffed two batters in a scoreless eighth. Rox closer Jake McGee put together another strong outing, punching out two en route to his 10th save of the season.
The Rockies won consecutive games at Coors Field for just the second time in 2016.
Mets starter Matt Harvey, who entered the game having pitched 19 consecutive scoreless innings against the Rockies, allowed five runs on 11 hits in 5⅔ innings.
