Game #61: Jennings vs Tomko
The Rockies try to bounce back against the divisional foe which has so far proven the most annoying in their ability to beat us this season. That said, I think our team was showing signs of snapping out of the recent offensive funk against Pittsburgh, and a win tonight will help vindicate my theory after last night's backsliding.
Go Rockies!

Watch Greg Reynolds tonight!
HOWEVER...
The game should be carried online at the NCAA site. Here is a link for the scoreboard page:
http://www.ncaasports.com/baseball/mens/scoreboard/div1
By each box score should be a video option, which is carrying the ESPN feed. You can go here tonight and watch the game, or any regional game (not including ORU/Clemson) on your windows media player.
So we all should get the chance to watch Reynolds tonight after all!

The Daily News
I guess it doesn't really matter because of the online video.

Unfortunately
I'm watching the Miami game on-line, and I'm telling you, nobody has more collective speed or takes more extra bases than Miami. They may be the best "hidden" power hitting team in collegiate baseball. If their starting pitching can hold up, they could make a run deep into June...

Stupid managers
Got a lefty reliever getting hit and having issues but does he pull him and put in Broxton? No, he leaves him in for the lefty on lefty match-up.
Just like Martin pitching in the 6th (though that worked out luckily) I will take the better pitcher 9 times out of 10 rather than throwing in a left hander who is questionable.

Anybody watching Reynolds?
From what little I've seen today, I've already watch the third baseman back up on a routine ground ball and boot it, and a ball get through the infield three steps from the second baseman to create another run, because of the error. It also looks like he surrendered the first run on grounballs not turned into outs as well. This should change when he gets to the majors, when guys like Tulo will be gobbling up everything hit to the right side.
His stuff is better than advertised. The curveball is pretty tight, but it doesn't have a ton of break, like a Brett Myers type curveball. It's still above average and could be a solid strike out pitch. The sinker has a lot of action (too much today) and is thrown harder than Jennings'. He isn't controlling the sinker well today and that will need to be monitored at the next level.
He also appears to consistently stay in the 90's, and seems to have little trouble hitting 94 in each at bat, when needed.
He's currently struggling in the third inning, but it starts by a one out groundball booted, a pitch around of OSU's top hitter with a runner on second, a ground ball not touched escaping the infield, a hit batsman, a walk, and then he finishes off the inning with a strikeout from an "unhittable" curve, and then a ground out (which the shortstop struggled to reach, but was hardly hit in a tough spot, Stanford's infield doesn't have impressive range).
So, again, these are just quick thoughts, but Reynolds's stuff might be second only to Cook's, which isn't too fair because Cook really only throws one pitch, but it is an elite pitch. He may have the middle of the rotation tag, but his stuff could easily overcome that projection.
You can never tell with these things, but there is a certain Denver Area native that features a low mid 90's heater, solid curve, and good command from a 6'6 frame that now competes for CY Young's north of the border...
Sometimes, seeing is believing, and as rox girl says, college stats don't tell the whole truth. Take Reynolds' stats from the past six outings and compare them to all the other first round pitchers and you might be surprised.

Let me reiterate
Oh, and I wish that Stanford would quit trying to see if Reynolds is the next Livan Hernandez, he has a pro career to worry about...

Actually
Besides, watching him last night, he quite clearly has the stuff to strike batters out, especially with that sharp late breaking curveball, which I believe is a knuckle curve, looking at his grip in his picture in BA's Draft Preview Mag. If he can refine his changeup, that number should rise even further.

You know more than anyone
But after watching him, I can see why we took him. The scouting reports all kind of seem outdated for him, because his numbers have improved as of late, and his stuff looked greater than advertised in BA and other outlets.
On the ESPN feed I watched, the announcers were just drooling over him. Sure Buck was solid, but he looked more like a really good college pitcher than a really good pro one. Everything they said about Buck they'd turn it right around into a conversation about Reynolds, one of the commentators even comparing Reynolds to Jack McDowell!
Speaking of Buck, he doesn't look like the same pitcher I watched last year, and I'm not sure I would want him right now unless he does have arm trouble. As silly as that may sound, if the best he can muster is an 86 mph sinker, regardless of its life, it will be hit at the pro level. Just ask Jason Jennings...
