Friday Morning Rockpile:

33-33. That's better than every team in the NL Central not named the Brewers, better than two T's and the other B in the AL East, and is within distance of the soon-to-be-arriving Yankees and the Twins (both 33-31). But before those Yanks visit, the Rockies must deal with the Rays (29-35). No, I won't actually rewrite what I wrote in yesterday's game thread since that was a joke anyway.

-----

In response to Schilling's blog entry on Hawpe's homer, Holliday said, "He wrote that?"

Vote Matt Holliday!

In the link to Holliday's comment, the main part of the article is Ortiz's support for Hlliday to be in the Home Run Derby. Vote Matt Holliday!

-----

Jamey Carroll and Chris Iannetta will start tonight. Vote Matt Holliday!

Oh, did I mention to Vote Matt Holliday! yet?

Right now I'm listening...
to people in the section next to me at my office actually talking, excitedly, about the Rockies winning the Boston series and being back at .500.

That's pretty amazing.
If this team continues to play like this. They could be the best Rockies team ever... unfortunately they still might not make the playoffs.

.500 !!!!! WHHHOOO HOOOOOO
We've hit mediocre! and we are giddy! Since the team is on an up swing, looks like we have some cautious optimism about these little scrappers.  The parts are starting to look like what we thought they might.  (now for Atkins to keep swinging a good bat, and the Wade Boggs/Todd Helton to show back up)

I expected Carroll to start, and Iannetta.  I actually expect more substitutions in the starting line up, after being in Boston at night, then coming back to Denver late/early and facing the D-Rays, who while good are sandwiched between the Red Sox and the Yankees.

Sunday we should see Helton and Hawpe and Kaz sit as we face a very good lefty in Kazmir and we have the off day Monday.  Holliday, and Atkins could use a day off as well as the schedule only gets tougher.

But we have Hurdle as the Manager, so who knows, he might rest our starters against the streaking Yankees.

I'm hoping for 4-2 on this home stand.  3-3 would not help us.  We got so buried early we are getting short on games to make a legit move to the upper part of the Division. And it's looking more and more like the 2nd place team in the NL West will be the wild card. Which is a little surprising as the last 2 years the Division champs were barely at .500.

Last year
The Dodgers and Padres each finished with a record of 88-74. That's good for the second best record in the NL last year. Seems like the NL West is getting better and better every year.

Baseball Analysts:
Jeff Albert talks with Vanderbilt pitching coach, Derek Johnson. On Rockies' first round pick Casey Weathers:
DJ:  That's not something really that I had to talk about a whole lot with him. He came in 90-92 but couldn't harness it. Got stronger, some tempo changes, couple tweaks here and there and all of a sudden his command started to get there. His confidence got better and the 92 now turned into 95 and 96. In the conference tournament, and I can't say this for a fact, but on at least one other gun other than ours, I think he hit 100 four times.

Jeff: Another wow...

DJ: He's crossed that 100 MPH barrier a couple times, and you never know. He might be that guy who does it kind of like a Zumaya or Verlander. He may be that kind of guy.

Definitely read the rest, as Johnson's got more nice things to say about Casey, as well as an interesting read on David Price and coaching talents like that.

I'm upset that Iannetta didn't play
at all in Boston. I mean...couldn't he at least have started ONE game? Is Clint mad at him? I'm really getting sick of grinding this axe, but can we please give the kid a chance to get going already? Yet? now?
