Tuesday Morning Rockpile:
What do Clint Hurdle and an elephant have in common? I'm not sure, but I do know that Hurdle might want a meal where elephant is being served:
"It's that old saying. 'How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.' . . . We've just got to focus on winning a series," [Hurdle said].
OK, so he referred to the season as an elephant, not about actually eating a real elephant. Anyone hoping PETA would get involved here is out of luck.
Anyway, winning series against the Giants this season has been a no-go so far, with a 2-4 record in six games. Aaron Cook started that crazy game on April 29 that the Rockies wound up winning. Pat Misch started for the Giants in the May 19 contest that the Rockies won (though Vinnie Chulk allowed the winning run). Making something out of nothing, that means the Rockies have a good chance at winning this one. Or if you want to look at the bad side of things, you'll say that the Rockies won the second game of the first series and the first game of the second series, meaning the Rockies will only win the final game of this series. I don't know, but I want that entire piece of elephant on the plate fully eaten and digested over the next three days.
Matt Holliday might want to slice off the biggest portion from that slab of elephant as he returns tonight from the DL.

Tuesday Morning Rockplie:
Apparently, someone threw a no-hitter last night. Eh . . . the Rockies won their third game in a row! The Rocky Mountain News has a good picture of Q starting the double play right before he fell hard to the ground. But Q's a gamer, as we mentioned last night, and stayed in the game. As Q said after the game:
"I could see him coming out of the corner of my eye, so I knew I was going to wear it," Quintanilla said. "I am a tough player. It whiplashed me, pinched my neck and back a little bit, and now my foot hurts. But we needed the out there."
And what a big out it was. Jeff Baker, who Q came in for later in the game, also deserves some praise for his defense last night when he made the throw to home to get Aaron Rowand out just after Jose Castillo struck out swinging.
It's been three in a row for the Rockies, so why not put Aaron Cook back on the winning track when they go for four straight tonight? After a less than desirable performance against the D'Backs on May 15, Aaron Cook will face Tim Lincecum tonight. Cook last faced the Giants on April 29. Lincecum's only loss this season so far came in that contest. That was the game we saw Chris Iannetta play third and Garrett Atkins second. Guess that won't happen this time--no Tulo to get injured this time.
Speaking of him, Tulo has begun taking part in light workouts, but still has a long way to go on the road to recovery. So, while out guy starts his way back to the game action, the Padres' Jake Peavy is about to go on the DL today for a troublesome elbow and may be out for six weeks.
Those maple bats are dangerous.

Wednesday Morning Rockpile: The Return of Q
Omar Quintanilla may have to compete with Garrett Atkins for playing time at second after last night, but nonetheless Q gets one more shot at showing he's more than just a very good AAA player that can't make the jump to the MLB level. Fortunately for Q, perhaps, but a little more troubling for the rest of us is the fact that he actually figures to get a lot of PT with both Troy Tulowitzki and Jeff Baker going down with injuries last night.
Everything's pretty much blown up right now. Thoroughly demolished and the Rockies will certainly have to be creative to patch this stretch of games together. That's even before we get to the rotation issues for Saturday. As far as that goes, the options seem to be Josh Towers or Jorge de la Rosa . I would figure Jose Capellan is another option since he was used as a starter in Colorado Springs.
With Atkins and Iannetta's position switches, last night's game was truly a memorable one, and should go down in the Rockies all time weird games along with Brent Mayne's pitching performance and the Spring Training bee game among others. As is usually the case with those, it's made particularly special by the improbable win. One positive side effect from it, a silver lining to losing Tulo, might be that this loosens the team up a bit. Thank goodness we were playing the Giants and not a real MLB team.
