Friday Morning Rockpile:

Did something happen the last time these two teams met? Well, whatever did happen, neither team "much cares to think about" what happened after that night.

Hurdle jabbed at the reporters after being asked about Jake Peavy:

"How do you think the Padres feel about facing Aaron Cook?" Hurdle replied. "We've got Cook going. I feel good about that."

After those April showers of losses, why shouldn't the Rockies become May flowers? We have our best starter going against the Padres' best starter. At PETCO Park. How many innings does this game go?

When the owner says something, you probably can count on it happening:

"We will put him [Greg Reynolds] out there and see what he can do. He would have been up here last year if not for the shoulder injury," Monfort said. "In a perfect world, we would rather have him stay in Triple-A. But we aren't living in a perfect world. We have some issues."

Can we speed up time and have it be Sunday today? I'm excited for this debut.

Tracy Ringolsby says the Rockies have interest in prep shortstop Anthony Hewitt.

Doug Davis is cancer-free.

Friday Morning Rockpile:

Doug Davis' surgery for thyroid cancer "was very successful," the team doctor said. As Davis recovers and works his way back towards pitching in the majors, the Rockies and D'Backs meet for round two this season. In the first round the D'Backs rang the Rockies' bell, but with the Rockies' bats seemingly coming alive on Wednesday this time it should be more of a challenge. First up is Francis vs. Webb, and Francis will want to get back at the D'Backs for his last outing. Twelve hits and five runs is not up to snuff. Nor is allowing three home runs. Plus, the D'Backs are riding a six-game winning streak. We don't need to see that go any longer.

What about those Giants? They're now winners of three straight after Kevin Correia threw 7 2/3 scoreless innings against the Cardinals last night. The Rockies don't need to be competing for the bottom of the NL West. Besides, I think Adam Wainwright was just being nice to the Giants by getting their hopes up for just a bit longer.

Since Josh Fogg is no longer a Rockie, the team needed a new player representative in the Union. Fogg tabbed The Physicist for that role.

Todd Helton says that the ivy grown at Coors helps hitters since some of the shine is eliminated.

Saturday Morning Rockpile:

All systems go, apparently. The Rockies plans for building depth have remained on track. Josh Towers and Jose Capellan were bad enough this Spring to ensure no outside interest as they cleared waivers and are reporting for Colorado Springs. Cory Sullivan is also ticketed to play with the Sky Sox, as the Rockies decided to make a go with Scott Podsednik off the bench instead to start the season. Sullivan and Ryan Speier -who's right handedness also played a role- were victims of the CBA's option system more than anything else, as both have had strong camps and would have made the Rockies decisions much harder had there been a risk of losing either to other teams. The Denver newspapers are in two camps with Sullivan this morning,

1. Sullivan's an example of ownership's new emphasis on winning over cost cutting

2. Sullivan is a well-liked victim of a brutal cut that will destroy clubhouse chemistry

The game itself, was a bittersweet victory that might not have told us anything, as you have to wonder how much Doug Davis' cancer diagnosis affected his pitching. He's the type of pitcher that needs to have cool-headed deception and a good poker face to be successful, and obviously other things are going to be on his mind right now that might throw him off. Our thoughts and well wishes go out to him and his family for a full and speedy recovery, as we hope to best him on the field many times this year.

The bats were out in full force, yesterday, sans Tulo, who's still showing weakness against finesse lefties. That Brad Hawpe hit his HR off Davis is particularly encouraging, as he's been much more consistent against southpaws this Spring. Let's hope that continues into the regular season when the games actually count.
