Colorado Springs, L 9-10 in 11 innings: The Sky Sox rallied for five runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at nine, only to ultimately lose. Joe Koshansky hit his 20th home run to lead off the inning; Kenny Perez had an RBI double; Chris Frey drove in a run on a single; Mike McCoy had an RBI triple (and a two-run homer earlier in the game); and Doug Bernier reached first base on a throwing error and saw McCoy score.

Steven Register pitched the last two innings and allowed a Chris Shelton RBI double to become the winning run. Sean Smith started the game and did all right over six innings: 3 R/1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K. The troubles came with Juan Morillo, who recorded no outs in the seventh inning. He faced five batters, allowed four of them to get a hit, and walked the other. Four of them scored while Morillo was on the mound while the other scored when Cedrick Bowers came in to relieve. Bowers himself walked four and one run scored that way. Josh Towers, oddly enough, didn't allow a run in his two innings of work.

Tulsa, L 6-9: It was a good night to hit  home runs . . . if  you were on NW Arkansas. Alan Johnson surrendered three homers, all multi-run homers. Johnson left after five innings and eight runs. Tomas Santiago struck out five over the next three innings.

Jeff Kindel hit a two-run homer, his 10th, in the seventh to bring the game to 6-9. Daniel Carte had two hits and two runs, and Corey Wimberly stole three bases to have 52 on the season.

Modesto, L 6-11: Simon Ferrer allowed five runs on nine hits over 4 1/3 innings, and Chris Malone saw four runs score in 1 2/3 innings. Mike McKenry hit his 12th home, a solo shot in the sixth. Anthony Jackson went 3-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI, and two runs scored. Chris Nelson went 0-for-5 and is hitting .192 after seven games.

Kane Simmons and Radames Nazario received promotions from Tri-City to Modesto yesterday. Esmil Rogers and Keith Weiser will be temporarily on the inactive list.

Asheville, L 2-4: The Tourists ran into some tough pitchers, namely Carl Pavano and Phil Hughes. Pavano allowed only a hit in two innings and struck out four. Phil Hughes held the Tourists to two hits over three innings. A wild pitch and a Bo Bowman single scored the two runs in the seventh inning. Bruce Billings allowed three runs on six hits in seven innings and struck out six in his start after throwing a no-hitter.

Tri-City, W 4-2: In the bottom of the first, Thomas Field started with a called strike out, but the next three Dust Devils walked. Patrick Rose reached base on an error, which scored two runs. In the sixth inning, two runs scored on two wild pitches. The Dust Devils only had three hits.

Kenny Durst started and allowed no runs on three hits in four innings. He struck out six. Austin Chambliss picked up his 10th save.

James Sims and Andy Goff have taken the places of Simmons and Nazario.

Casper, W 5-0: Ethan Hollingsworth allowed no runs in five innings and struck out eight, his best start of the season. Isaiah Froneberger struck out three in two innings, and Kurt Yacko struck out two in the ninth.

Carlos Martinez had two hits (one for a triple) and two RBI. Wilin Rosario also had a triple and an RBI. Forty-sixth round pick Jimmy Cesario made his debut, had a hit, and struck out three times.

The Rockies are about to finish a deal with Tyler Massey today, their 14th round draft pick. The story indicates his signing bonus will be close to what second rounders are getting this year, but this article from the RMN mentions a $400K signing bonus, just under what second rounders have received. Massey can play either first base or the outfield corners and will report to Casper after signing.

The second link above also mentions that the Yankees and Rays have scouts in town for the series against the Dodgers in order to see Brian Fuentes pitch. They'll want to watch him in close- and late-inning situations, but more games such as last night's and that won't happen.

At least we know Kip Wells won't be in the rotation for long:

"We're looking for somebody to help us solidify the starting rotation," manager Clint Hurdle said before the game.

"(Wells) is going to get the first shot at that. This is not going to be eight, 10 starts to figure it out. This needs to be something you come in, you embrace, you make pitches, you keep the ball down, you throw strikes and we'll go from there."

But then it's likely that anyone the Rockies plug into the rotation for Wells wouldn't be able to do what Hurdle wants him to do. Josh Towers? Franklin Morales again? Jason Hirsh? They're just as likely to fail in the rotation, but there's always Valerio De Los Santos.

Todd Helton says the Rockies don't want him hitting yet because they believe one swing could aggravate his injury again.

Colorado Springs, L 1-2 - Cory Sullivan had two hits and the RBI, but that's pretty much it for the offense. Valerio De Los Santos allowed one run on two hits and a walk in five innings. De Los Santos struck out six. In between Juan Morillo's and Steven Register's innings of relief, Josh Towers allowed a run over his two innings of relief.

Tulsa, L 2-4 & L 3-7 in 13 innings - Tulsa scored two runs in the first inning of the first game and didn't score in the remaining eight. Tony Blanco had an RBI single and Jeff Kindel hit into an RBI ground out to put the Drillers on board. The six hits the Drillers had came in two-hit nights for Blanco, Corey Wimberly, and Matt Miller. Wimberly also stole his 39th base. Xavier Cedeno allowed three runs in 4 2/3 innings.

Game 2: Springfield's catcher Matt Pagnozzi and Tulsa's catcher Brian Esposito wound up pitching multiple innings at the end of the game. Pagnozzi recorded the victory. Esposito pitched four innings and allowed four runs on two doubles in the 13th (the second one plating three). Corey Wimberly had two more hits and stole his 40th base, and Dexter Fowler recorded a hit an walked three times. Jeff Dragicevich, Justin Nelson, and Eduardo Cornejo each had multi-hit nights.

Modesto,  L 4-6 - Jay Cox hit his sixth homer, a two-run shot in the second, and Mike McKenry had an RBI double in the sixth. Daniel Mayora had three hits, all singles, but nothing else to show for them. Anthony Jackson stole two bases to increase his total to 25. Keith Weiser allowed four runs on six hits in seven innings. Weiser allowed only one extra-base hit, an RBI triple.

Asheville, W 6-1 - Cory Riordan delivered one of his best starts of the season by going the distance for his seventh win. He allowed one run on six hits and three walks and struck out eight.

Everth Cabrera went 3-for-5 with a double, a run scored, two RBI, and three stolen bases (57). Lars Davis had two hits and an RBI, while Brian Rike drove in a run. Actually, all six runs scored in the seventh inning.

Tri-City, L 5-8 - Tri-City had a four-run third inning after Charlie Blackmon's RBI single and Josh Banda's three-run homer. Ryan Peisel drove in a run in the sixth to tie the game at five, but Boise scored three runs over the seventh and eighth innings. Juan Nicasio allowed five runs in four innings, which was followed by a scoreless inning by David Parker. Brandon Miller and Tyler trice allowed two and one runs in their appearances.

Casper, L 0-6 - Kane Simmons and Orlando Sandoval each had a double, which were two of Casper's three hits. Dan Houston allowed two runs on one hit and four walks in four innings. Kurt Yacko allowed three runs (one earned) in the eighth

Colorado Springs, W 5-4 in 12 innings - Tied at three at the end of regulation play, this game went a few more innings. After Salt Lake took a 4-3 lead in the 11th, Joe Koshansky his his 16th homer to tie the game. Jonathan Herrera singled to start the bottom of the 12th and moved to second on a sac bunt by Chris Frey. Dustan Mohr stepped in the box and saw a wild pitch by the pitcher and a throwing error by the catcher score Herrera for the win.

Glendon Rusch allowed three runs in 5 2/3 innings and allowed 11 hits. Alberto Arias, Juan Morillo, and Josh Newman combined for a hitless 4 1/3 innings. Morillo, however, did walk a batter. Arias did not let a runner score after Rusch left the game with the bases loaded. Josh Towers picked up the win after pitching the final two innings.

Tulsa, W 3-2 in 10 innings - In the top of the 10th inning, David Parrish reached base on the pitcher's fielding error on a sac bunt attempt, which moved Justin Nelson over to second (who reached on a walk). Eric Young Jr. then reached on the pitcher's throwing error on a force attempt. With the bases loaded, Dexter Fowler entered the box and was hit by a pitch. Nelson scored the winning run. Fowler also had an RBI in the third inning. Eric Young Jr.'s two hits were a double and a homer (5).

Brandon Hynick turned in an outstanding eight innings. He allowed the runs on solo homers. He walked one and struck out four. Ryan Mattheus picked up his 12th save.

Modesto, L 8-9 - Down by two in the seventh, Victor Ferrante's sac fly, Matt Repec's three-run homer, and Jay Cox's solo homer put the Nuts ahead 8-5. Repec had a two-run homer earlier in the game, giving him five RBI on the night.

But the pitching wasn't there late in the game last night. Simon Ferrer allowed three runs (two off a two-run homer) in five innings. Brandon Durden saw two more  runs score in the sixth inning. Andy Graham struck out all three batters he faced in the seventh, but the eighth was his undoing. He began that inning with an out before allowing a double and back-to-back homers. Will Harris came in, recorded the last two outs of the inning, and came back out for the ninth. Jose Vallejo singled after a leadoff out by Marcus Lemon and eventually moved over to third. A Chad Tracy sac fly scored Vallejo.

Asheville, L 2-5 - Sheng-An Kuo allowed only two runs before the start of the bottom of the seventh inning, those coming in the bottom of the first. He only allowed three hits up to that point. So, what happens? A walk, a double, and an RBI single. Matthew Reynolds relieved Kuo, threw a wild pitch to score a run, and then allowed a sac fly. Those three runs broke the 2-2 game.

Kevin Clark hit a two-run homer in the fourth, his eighth of the season. Everth Cabrera had two hits and two stolen bases (47).

Tri-City, W 8-1 - Last night, Parker Frazier certainly showed how much he improved since his time with Casper in 2007. He threw seven innings of shutout ball, allowed only four hits, and struck out three. After a leadoff single in the first, he retired the next 11 batters before allowing consecutive hits in the fourth. The final hit came in teh seventh. Rod Scurry allowed one run in 2/3 IP. Andy Groves struck out three over the last 1 1/3 innings of the game.

Josh Banda drove in two on a double and a sac fly. Charlie Blackmon had a double in the third and scored on a wild pitch. In the fifth inning, half of the Dust Devils runs scored. Leonardo Reyes and Bo Bowman had RBI singles, Banda had his already mentioned sac fly, and Jordan Pacheco scored on a throwing error during a pickoff attempt. Two more runs scored in the ninth when a fielding error allowed Patrick Rose to reach base and Jordan Pacheco and Bo Bowman to score.

Casper, W 3-2 - James Sims led off the game with a triple, but was out at home on the next play when Carlos Martinez hit into a double play. Things got better the next inning when Orlando Sandoval doubled at the start of it. Nick Valdez then tripled him in. Later in the inning, Valdez scored on an Alex Feinberg single. In the sixth inning, Valdez hit a sac fly to score Mike Zuanich.

It was good night for the pitchers. Yull Silano did walk three batters, but he allowed only one run in four innings. Brandon Walker pitched 1 1/3 innings, allowed a run on two hits, and struck out three. Adam Jorgensen picked up the win, striking out five over 2 1/3 innings. Kurt Yacko picked up his first save by striking out two in 1 1/3 innings.

Colorado Springs, L 5-13 - After the end of the sixth, the Sky Sox held a 5-4 lead. Josh Towers pitched the first five innings and allowed all four runs. Luis Vizcaino came in for the sixth and things went smoothly for him (after the leadoff triple). Then Chris George came in. He allowed two doubles and two singles to score three runs. Juan Morillo came in the next inning, issued three straight walks, and then recorded his first out. A single scored the first run in the eighth. Landon Powell had a two-run groundout as Doug Bernier committed a throwing error. In the ninth, we saw more of the same as Steven Register allowed three runs, all unearned. On back-to-back plays, Eduardo Cornejo and Joe Koshansky committed errors. The first run scored on Koshansky's error, and the other two scored on a ground out and a single.

Joe Koshansky went 3-for-5 with two doubles and a two-run homer (12). Christian Colonel had two hits, one for a double.

Tulsa, L 8-9 - Losing 4-7 entering the top of the sixth, the Drillers scored a run in each inning. Unfortunately, two runs in the bottom of the sixth gave the Rockhounds enough room to win the game. Matt Miller and Jeff Kindel both had two hits and two RBI, and Jeff Dragicevich had a solo home run for his eighth of the season (and three fielding errors). Corey Wimberly and Dexter Fowler each had two hits as well. Wimberly also added two stolen bases for 23 on the season.

Xavier Cedeno allowed nine runs (five earned) on eight hits and four walks. He struck out six. Jon George and Darren Clarke held opposing batters to three hits and no runs over the final 2 2/3 innings.

Modesto, L 1-5 - Anthony Jackson had a double to leadoff the game and eventually scored on a Mike Paulk sac fly. Nick Haley had two hits and Jay Cox had one. Modesto had only those four hits. Jackson (15), Cox (1), and Haley (6) each stole a base.

Esmil Rogers pitched valiantly for seven inning, allowing only one run on four hits. He walked two and struck out seven. Will Harris came in for the eighth and allowed a two-run homer, an RBI single, and a RBI double to lose the game.

Asheville, W 6-4 - Helder Velazquez went 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI, and two stolen bases (6). The game also saw Everth Cabrera hit a triple, score on a Mike Mitchell sac fly, and steal a base (36). Mike Mitchell also stole two bases (21). Brian Rike played and went 1-for-4 with two runs scored and three strikeouts.

Sheng-An Kuo liked the number six tonight. He picked up his sixth winning after pitching six innings. He allowed two runs on six hits, and walked two and struck out six. Craig Baker struck out three in the eighth before Randall Taylor struck out three to pick up his 18th save.

Colorado Springs, W 10-9 - The Sky Sox won this game after Roy Corcoran hit Sean Barker with the bases loaded. Jayson Nix scored the winning run. The Sky Sox were actually entered the inning with eight runs, but a Chris Frey triple and a Christian Colonel RBI single to score Frey tied the game. In the third inning, Doug Bernier had an RBI triple, Frey had an RBI single, and Jayson Nix followed those two with an RBI double. In the eighth, Colonel doubled in Frey and Nix, Edwin Bellorin singled in Colonel and Joe Koshansky, and Rick Guarno had a sac fly.

Josh Towers went six innings, allowed six runs on 13 hits, and struck out five. Steven Register picked up his third win after allowing the go-ahead run at the time in the top of the ninth.

Tulsa, L 6-17 - Matt Miller (6) and Jeff Dragicevich (7) each had a homer, and Daniel Carte and Justin Nelson drove in two runs each.

Tomas Santiago allowed five runs in 3 1/3 IP; Jonathan George saw five runs cross the plate in 1 2/3 IP; and Luis Gonazlez witnessed six men cross the plate in 1 1/3 IP (he also walked four). Two of Gonzalez's runs crossed home when Casey Weathers came in. Weathers allowed those two runs to score and was charged with one run for himself in 2/3 IP. He struck out two. Duke Sardinha, a first baseman, pitched the last inning, allowing only a hit. Of the 17 runs scored, 10 of them were driven in by Midland's Tommy Everidge on two three-run homers and a grand slam. "Power of the mustache," former Rockies' farmhand Joe Gaetti says.

Santiago and manager Stu Cole were ejected in the fourth inning. Santiago hit a batter and then threw a pitch over the head of the next batter, being ejected for that. Cole was tossed right after that.

Modesto, L 0-4 - Victor Ferrante hit his eighth double and Geoff Strickland stole his 14th base. The Nuts managed only six hits.

After a two singles and a sac fly in the first, Esmil Rogers shutdown the Visalia Oaks between the second and seventh innings. He didn't allow a hit or any base runners. In the eighth he allowed a leadoff double, that runner scoring on a homer two batters later. A second double scored the third run of the inning. Rogers went 7 2/3 innings, allowed four runs on six hits, and struck out four.

Asheville, W 9-5 - Jhoulys Chacin put in another great performance: 8 IP, 7 H, 2/1 R/ER, 1 BB, 9 K. Andy Groves started the ninth, allowed three hits and three walks, and saw three men cross home plate. Randall Taylor came in with two outs and the bases loaded to record his 15th save.

Jeff Cunningham led the offense last night with two homers (10), a three-run and a two-run. That accounted for five of his six RBI. The other one came in a bases-loaded walk in the fifth. Darin Holcomb had an RBI single and an RBI walk, which came in the fifth after Holcomb's. Brian Rike had an RBI sacrifice double play. Mike Mitchell scored, but Jeff Cunningham also attempted to tag up and was thrown out at third. Everth Cabrera stole his 32nd base.

Jack Etkin posts a slew of injury updates, including the note that Chaz Roe will start a pair of games at Modesto beginning next week before moving to Tulsa.

Colorado Springs: W 10-4

Seth Smith hit his fifth homerun of the season last night, Jayson Nix had three hits including a double and triple, and Josh Towers added a pair of hits himself to the seven decent innings he threw. Smith finished with two hits and four RBI, and the top three in the Sky Sox lineup, Smith, Nix and Corey Sullivan each scored twice, getting safely aboard in 10 of 16 PA's.

Speaking of getting aboard safely, as I've been arguing, the poorer aspects of Ian Stewart's road numbers that didn't jive with the rest of his line this season really do appear to be a bit flukish. Two walks, a single and an HBP last night added to his two homers on Thursday have raised his road OBP from .294 to .326 and his road batting average from .223 to .238. Neither of those figures are close to acceptable without his home dominance factored in, but the upward road correction still seems to have a ways to go before it's finished. One interesting split for Stewart that may deserve closer scrutiny is how poorly he seems to do when he's pitched to out of the windup versus out of a stretch. He's batting .167/.250/.426 in 54 PA's with nobody on, .337/.423/.742 with men on base. Twelve of his seventeen hits with RISP have gone for extra bases, including six of his HR's.

Tulsa: W 10-9

It took eleven innings to resolve this offensive punch out, with Matt Miller scoring the winning run on a suicide squeeze bunt by Brian Esposito. Casey Weathers stopped Springfield from coming back for a third time in the bottom half to earn his first save of the season.

Jeff Kindel had four hits, including a pair of doubles, and Tony Blanco's first inning grand slam of Adam Ottavino set the early tone. Alan Johnson was staked to a seven to nothing lead heading into the bottom of the second, but he let it all slip away over his next four innings, finishing with seven runs allowed on nine hits, including one homerun. The good news is that he was throwing strikes, with five K's to go along with zero walks, but his location was consistently up in the zone.

Tulsa took a nine to seven lead in the sixth when a two out Dexter Fowler fly to left was dropped by the fielder, scoring Corey Wimberly, and then Dex himself would come around on a Miller single, one of three runs on the night for him.
Johnson pitched a scoreless sixth, but Jon George gave up back to back homers in the seventh and the score held at nine until Miller's run.

Modesto: W 6-1

Aneury Rodriguez has made a strong case for just keeping the Cal League Pitcher of the Week chalice in Modesto for a little while, going seven innings and allowing just seven singles and a walk to follow his nine inning one hitter on Sunday. His line for the week: 16 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 13 K. That's a 0.56 ERA which has helped erase the disastrous outing he had against Bakersfield on May 6th.

Michael McKenry tosses out two more baserunners attempting to steal off him and had a pair of hits against the right handed pitchers. If he could just figure out how to hit southpaws, he'd be a pretty complete player. He's 3 for 41 (.073) against LHP's this year, but putting up a .281/.373/.521 line against right handers.

Cole Garner and Jay Cox added three hits apiece; Garner's now hitting .426 in the month of May.

Asheville: W 3-1

All the headlines this morning are about Dellin Betances no hitting the Tourists through six (the SAL's home page makes it impossible to tell the Tourists won ) but let me just say that similarly to the way Aneury Rodriguez was a better starter than Franklin Morales last Sunday despite the latter not allowing a hit, Jhoulys Chacin was every bit as good a pitcher as Betances last night and possibly better. For starters, with fewer pitches per inning, Chacin was able to last eight innings compared to Betances' six, which is a big plus seeing how more chances against Charleston's bullpen allowed the T's more opportunity to score their winning runs. While Betances' 4/6 baserunners/innings ratio is a little better than Chacin's 7/8, Betances allowed five free advancements via stolen base or WP to zero for Chacin. Finally, Jhoulys' 11/6 GB/FB ratio will serve him better advancing levels than Dellin's 3/7. I'm not saying Betances wasn't good -I'd certainly be happy if he was in the Rockies system- I'm just saying that the guy on our side deserves some exposure too.

As I alluded to, the Tourists were four for four in SB's last night, including two more for Everth Cabrera who is now just three away from the SAL's top spot with 22 on the year. Jeff Cunningham roped a two run double in the eighth to provide the Tourists their final margin of victory.

Colorado Springs, L 1-6 - The Sky Sox had eight hits with three coming off Seth Smith's bat. Joe Koshansky drove in the love Sky Sox run. Ian Stewart's fifth double was the only extra base hit the team had last night.

Josh Towers lasted seven innings, allowed six runs on 11 hits, and struck out six. Victor Zambrano threw two clean innings and struck out three.

Tulsa, L 5-9 - Justin Nelson led the offense with three hits and two RBI. The two RBI came on his third homer of the season. Jeff Kindel had two hits and one of the three doubles Tulsa had. Jeff Dragicevich and Justin Nelson had the other ones. Daniel Carte, Dragicevich, and Neil Wilson drove in the other three runs.

The Tulsa defense committed five errors: Chris Nelson had two fielding ones for 15 on the season, Dexter Fowler committed his second on a missed catch, Neil Wilson erred on a throw, and Tony Blanco committed a fielding error. The Tulsa World says the wind takes some blame for the miscues.

Alan Johnson allowed eight runs on 12 hits to fall to 1-5 on the season. Hainley Statia's three-run triple in the sixth was part of a five-run inning. Adam Bright allowed two hits and struck out two in two innings of relief.

Modesto, W 7-5 - Anthony Jackson hit a two-run homer for his first of the season as part of his 3-for-5, two-RBI, two-run, two stolen base (11) night. Jay Cox fell a homer short of the cycle and drove in one run. Cole Garner hit his eighth double and stole his fourth base.

Esmil Rogers allowed one run on five hits and two walks over six innings. Tommy Baumgardner (2/3 IP) and Will Harris (1 1/3 IP) relieved for Rogers, and Baumgardner allowed a run. James Burok allowed a three-run homer and did not record an out in the ninth inning. Andrew Johnston came in and recorded his eighth save.

Asheville, W 8-0 - Jhoulys Chacin improved to 5-1 after last night's performance. He allowed no runs on four hits in seven innings pitched. He walked two and struck out five. Edgmer Escalona preserved the shutout by pitching the final two innings.

David Christensen hit his first two homers of the season, both were solo shots. His first came in the first inning right after Jeff Cunningham hit a three-run shot. The other came in the third inning. Everth Cabrera stole his 18th base, and Rike his eighth.

Colorado Springs, W 7-6 - Cory Sullivan doubled in two runs in the second inning, and Ian Stewart promptly doubled in Sullivan. Sean Barker collected three hits and drove in a run. Juan Castro made his debut for the Sky Sox, had two hits, and drove in a run. Joe Koshansky (who struck out three times) and Rick Guarno had the other RBI. Jayson Nix had a double, and Stewart, Barker, and Colonel each stole a base.

Josh Towers went 5 2/3 innings, allowed four runs on ten hits and a walk. He also struck out four. Matt Daley and Steven Register held Memphis hitless over the last two innings. Register picked up his third save.

Tulsa, L 2-3 - Chris Nelson went 3-for-4 with a home run, his second. He stole his third base of the season as well (Fowler stole his eighth). Daniel Carte drove in the other run. Jeff Kindel had a triple in the sixth and scored on Carte's single.

Alan Johnson went 7 1/3 innings and allowed all three runs.

Modesto - The Cal League had an off day.

Asheville, W 5-4 - David Christensen singled in Brian Lapin twice as part of his 3-for-4 night. He also stole his fifth base. But it was Brian Rike who had the best hit of the night, his seventh homer in the bottom of the ninth to win the game. He also had an assist and an error.

Jhoulys Chacin allowed four runs in seven innings. He walked three and struck out six. Randall Taylor picked up the win. This was the team's first win when trailing after seven innings.

Omar Quintanilla may have to compete with Garrett Atkins for playing time at second after last night, but nonetheless Q gets one more shot at showing he's more than just a very good AAA player that can't make the jump to the MLB level. Fortunately for Q, perhaps, but a little more troubling for the rest of us is the fact that he actually figures to get a lot of PT with both Troy Tulowitzki and Jeff Baker going down with injuries last night.

Everything's pretty much blown up right now. Thoroughly demolished and the Rockies will certainly have to be creative to patch this stretch of games together.
