Sports Network | August 30, 2008
Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Jayson Werth finished 3-for-4 with two homers and four runs batted in, as the Philadelphia Phillies bested the Chicago Cubs, 5-2. Jimmy Rollins had three hits, including a double, and Ryan Howard added a solo shot, his MLB-best 37th of the season, for the Phillies, who snapped a three- game losing streak. Brett Myers (8-10) gave up two runs on 11 hits, all singles, over seven-plus innings to get the win. He recorded eight strikeouts and did not walk a batter. Myers improved to 5-1 since being recalled from the minors on July 20. J.C. Romero struck out the side in the eighth and Brad Lidge tossed a 1-2-3 ninth for his 32nd save in 32 opportunities. Geovany Soto and Aramis Ramirez each drove in a run for Chicago, which had won the first two games of this four-game set and seven in a row overall. Ted Lilly (13-8) took the loss, tagged for three runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings. Neal Cotts allowed two runs in 1 1/3 inning of relief. The Cubs grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second. Mark DeRosa lined a single to center with one out and Kosuke Fukudome reached on a bunt single before Soto punched a base hit up the middle to score DeRosa and snap Myers' career-best scoreless streak at 17 1/3 innings. Chicago threatened again in the third and fourth innings, but Myers worked out of trouble to keep it a one-run game. Meanwhile, Lilly was cruising along, retiring 12 in a row, before Werth led off the fifth with a blast to the seats in left. The Phillies pulled ahead with two runs in the sixth. Chase Utley had a one- out single and Howard singled with two outs before Shane Victorino was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Werth then delivered with a two-run single for a 3-1 lead. Philadelphia tacked on two more runs in the eighth on homers by Howard and Werth. Three consecutive singles by Ryan Theriot, Derrek Lee and Ramirez to open the home half plated a run and chased Myers from the game. Romero entered from the Philadelphia bullpen and fanned pinch-hitters Reed Johnson and Ronny Cedeno before Fukudome walked to load the bases, bringing up Soto, who stared at strike three to end the inning.
