Sports Network | August 31, 2008
Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Adrian Beltre hit a pair of home runs and Seattle relievers staved off a late Cleveland push, as the Mariners edged the Indians, 6-4, to complete a three-game sweep. Beltre ended 3-for-4 with three runs batted in for the Mariners, who have won seven of their last nine contests. Ichiro Suzuki and Raul Ibanez both had an RBI in the win. Ryan Rowland-Smith (4-2) got his second straight win after yielding two runs -- one earned -- on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings of work. Roy Corcoran walked the bases loaded in the ninth, but got out of the jam to record his second save on the season. Shin-Soo Choo had a solo homer for the Indians, who were swept on the heels of a 10-game win streak. Franklin Gutierrez and Andy Marte both drove in a run in defeat. Zach Jackson (0-1) took the loss as he was touched for six runs on seven hits over five innings. The Indians attempted a rally in the ninth off Corcoran. Grady Sizemore and Jamey Carroll got things going with consecutive walks. Victor Martinez went down swinging for the first out, but Jhonny Peralta worked a walk to load the bases. Ryan Garko, however, played the role of rally-killer with a game-ending 1-6-4-3 double play. The M's took an early lead as Beltre led off the second inning with a homer to left. Choo, though, tied it in the home half with a blast into the right field seats. Seattle took the lead back with a five-run fifth inning. Jeff Clement was hit by a pitch with one down and Miguel Cairo made it second and third as his bunt single was fielded by Jackson, who botched the throw to first. Suzuki clubbed an RBI single and Martinez missed a pickoff attempt at first, allowing Cairo to score and moving Suzuki to second. Yuniesky Betancourt's groundout moved Suzuki to third before Ibanez slapped an RBI single to center. Beltre closed out the scoring with a two-run homer deep into the left field seats, making it 6-1. Cleveland added a run in the seventh. With one gone, Gutierrez hit a slow roller towards third and reached first as Beltre's throw pulled Cairo off the bag. Kelly Shoppach's single put runners on the corners before Marte hit an RBI single to center, making it 6-2. The Tribe rallied again in the eighth to make it a two-run game. Randy Messenger loaded the bases by giving up a single to Peralta, a walk to Garko and another base hit to Choo. Miguel Batista was summoned from the pen and got Gutierrez to ground into a fielder's choice at second, which scored two runs when second baseman Jose Lopez' relay throw to first was offline.
