Yankees' Rivera considering surgery

Sports Network | September 26, 2008

Boston, MA (Sports Network) - New York Yankees star closer Mariano Rivera is considering whether to have surgery on his sore right shoulder in the offseason.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi downplayed the injury, however.

"This isn't something that is a serious shoulder injury," Girardi said. "It wasn't affecting his stuff. It wasn't affecting his ability to get people out."

One of the best closers in baseball history, Rivera has had another spectacular season. The right-hander is 6-5 with a 1.43 earned run average with 38 saves in 39 opportunities.

Meanwhile, Girardi also revealed that starting pitcher Andy Pettitte had a second MRI exam on his left shoulder and the results were promising.

"We wanted to make sure, because obviously he's someone we think about for next season," Girardi said.

Pettitte is eligible to become a free agent and has thought about retirement. The veteran left-hander is 14-14 with a 4.54 ERA this season.
