Boston, MA (Sports Network) - The Boston Red Sox announced on Wednesday that most of their coaching staff will return for the 2009 season, with the exception of first base coach Luis Alicea.
Pitching coach John Farrell, third base coach DeMarlo Hale, hitting coach Dave Magadan, bench coach Brad Mills and bullpen coach Gary Tuck have all been invited to return for next season, the club announced, but Alicea will not be extended a contract for 2009.
Alicea, an infielder who spent 13 seasons in the majors with the St. Louis Cardinals, Red Sox, Anaheim Angels, Texas Rangers, and Kansas City Royals, had been on Terry Francona's staff for the last two years.
Also on Wednesday, the Red Sox announced that righthanded pitcher Chris Smith elected for free agency. Smith was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on October 17. The righthander was 1-0 with a 7.85 ERA in 12 appearances with Boston in 2008.
