Lidge named Delivery Man of the Year

Sports Network | October 27, 2008

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Philadelphia Phillies closer Brad Lidge has been named the winner of the "DHL Presents the Major League Baseball Delivery Man of the Year Award."

This award recognizes the most outstanding relief pitcher of the season as voted on by the fans.

The 31-year-old Lidge converted all 41 save opportunities this season, and was 2-0 with a 1.95 earned run average in 72 outings. He anchored a Phillies bullpen which went 79-0 when leading after eight innings during the regular season.

A two-time All-Star, Lidge also received a lucrative contract extension this season. Philadelphia signed the right-hander to deal worth $37.5 million over the next three years with a club option for 2012.

In recognition of this award, DHL will donate $10,000 to benefit the Phillies RBI/Rookie League program, in Lidge's name.

Lidge was acquired from Houston last November along with utility player Eric Bruntlett for outfielder Michael Bourn, pitcher Geoff Geary and minor-league third baseman Mike Costanzo.
