Sunday Morning Rockpile: Another Day, Another Game?

As users Charlie77 and jjmckay noted last night, there's a good chance for some form of precipitation all day today. We'll have to look for updates throughout the day. And the temperatures aren't supposed to be higher than the mid 40s F. Perfect baseball weather.

As we wait for the game, why not read the reaction of Reds fans to the hiring of Dusty Baker, and find out how a fan from Baker's last club thinks things will turn out. Everyone remembers this gem from Baker, right?

"On-base percentage is great if you can score runs and do something with that on-base percentage," Baker said. "Clogging up the bases isn't that great to me. The problem we have to address more than anything is the home run problem."

-----

The Denver Post has something on the history of religion in baseball and brings up the Rockies. We haven't read enough about that lately, so no link. But, hey, the team has three young Latino pitchers playing important roles this season. Maybe that'll quiet, as one diary recently brought up, the talk about some supposed profiling of who is brought in an signed by the Rockies.

We all know about the profiling the media practices in sports. On today's Sports Reporters, the Rockies were such a great story that they were covered for about two minutes, sandwiched in between the Indians-Red Sox game and Kentucky beating LSU in overtime. Business as usual. Someone should tell those guys that Denver's a baseball town.

Where I live
It's snowing. Two inches on the ground already, with the forecast calling for 5 plus, potentially more above 7000...I live at 8200. It's maybe, 34 degrees?

In Denver it's supposed to only rain...but it'll be cold. We'll see about this game...stay WARM, boys!

Either way, it's going to be freezing tonight, for the players and the fans. The fans just need to make a lot of noise and energy...might help out. :)

IN-THREAD CONTEST:
Who will be the first national media member to say baseball shouldn't be played in Colorado, or people like East Coast baseball better, or something because it snows in October?

by potterhead4 on Oct 14, 2007 9:55 AM MDT up reply actions

Ha!
That's so true. Sad, but true...I don't know enough names to hazard a guess on that one, but someone will.

Does anyone live in Denver? What's it doing there? Snowing? Raining? Neither?

by Squeaky on Oct 14, 2007 10:02 AM MDT up reply actions

I live in Parker
It's been raining (light showers) on and off, since early evening on Saturday. Couple times it was real rain showers.   It's wet, and chilly, and very grey.  Like Seattle in January. The kind of weather that gets to your bones and makes you feel cold all over.

Hot chocolate sales will be brisk tonight.

Snow? Baseball?
I lived in Denver for several years and the press always went on and on about why Denver should NEVER get a team because of the snow factor.  Remember when they used to have exhibition MLB games at the end of March, and one of those was always snowed out?

Then Cleveland/Seattle happened this year with the Mariners (my AL team) getting snowed out of an entire series.  So, yeah, media.  Enough about snow.

Hope it is a baseball town
I hate the Nuggets.

I sorta like the Broncos.

May I ask what time the game is, et? Or will you make me go to ESPN with DIALUP to find out for myself? :(

I wouldn't have you do that.
Game time is 8:30.

Thanks guys
Going to ESPN at all is bad enough.

And ignore the media. You guys are heros to us Seattle fans.

Also
I got a Seahawks game at that time (national tv) so I wont be around much if at all to bug you guys. : P

by Slica on Oct 14, 2007 11:18 AM MDT up reply actions

wait... what???
why would someone from seattle hate the nuggets?

just teasing.  no hard feelings.  hey, it happened to the heat a couple years later, and then again to dallas last year, so it's not like you're the only team to drop the ball in the first round as a #1 seed.

rockies in october.

Actually
I used to like the Nuggets.

Just hate them now. I really dont know why.

DIA
Out here by DIA it is cold and rainy, no sign of snow yet, though I am in an area that gets a rather...unique...weather pattern compared to most of the rest of the metro area.

Ass-u-ming...
That tonight gets rained out, I assume the entire series is pushed back a game.  Would that mean Brandon Webb on full rest in game 4, with the possibility of him again on short rest in a game 7?

Not that I think this is headed to game 7, I think a game 5 is doubtful at this point.  Just thought the question should be raised.

Speaking of a rain out
how does that affect the tickets? They are printed as  Home Game 1, Home Game 2, Home Game 3.  So if tonights game is rained out, and they use the off day Tuesday as the make up day, which ticket do I use for Monday's game? Game 1? or Game 2? To make it even more complicated for me personally...I have tickets to Games 1 and 3. (I ASS-U-ME that it all backs up. Game one is Monday, Game two tickets would be Tuesday)

BUT, I don't think it's a rain out.  Not even heavy rain around, just little sprinkle showers on and off, and as I write this at 2pm mtn. it hasn't rained here in Parker for several hours now.

There's only one... what?
I'm pretty sure we can all appreciate Saturday Night Live making fun of Dane Cook's promos.

Also, with the way the media's been treating every team that's not Boston in this round, I'd almost like to see a Cleveland/Colorado World Series with enough snow delays to push the deciding game back to Thanksgiving.

Haha, that's awesome!
Thank you SNL for getting on that, those ads have been annoying me to no end.

What makes them even worse is that you can tell they were all pre-recorded.  He'll say "Arizona Diamondbacks", completely change his tone of voice to say "Colorado Rockies", and then say a bunch of generic "It's getting intense", "Which team wants it more", and "I love the sound of my own voice" -s.  He doesn't even know the teams he's promo-ing.  Like, when they were listing the players who are under 26 and are "the future", notice that they left off, um, Matt Holliday?  I mean, they had to make room for all the Red Sox...and I'll bet Cook couldn't pronounce Tulowitzki...

Anyway, great link, thanks for sharing!

My favorite...
I haven't seen a single ad talking about the Rockies.  The D-backs, yeah.  As we know, two bites makes them deadly.  I'm pretty sure a mountain falling on your ass would leave a pretty good mark too.

Hahahaha!
I need to remember that. As for Dane Cook, I'm perfectly all right with him not making a commercial about the Rockies (although I heard a disturbing rumor that he did). As if that tool pimping our team would somehow make it more attractive... no.

Oh there is.
It just airs during the ALCS (as it did at least in the Yankees series).  The way he says the Colorado Rockies annoys me though.  The pause between Colorado Rockies sounds horrible.  Didn't make one for actober.com though, but didn't see one for Arizona or the Yanks (how is that possible).

Shout out to JJMckay
Everytime I read one of your posts I can hear the sound of your voice. I don't have cable tv, so I've listened to most of the Rocks games on the radio --1340 The Fan-- and enjoyed listening to your postgame wrapups all season.

Here's to another winning postgame wrapup!!

I've gotten to the point
where I have to stop reading about Game 3, because it's stressing me out, the same way I got with Game 3 of the NLDS. Hopefully this one has a similar ending.

I know...
I've read almost everything on ESPN, Fox Sports, RMN, and I keep refreshing here and the Snake Pit...but all I'm doing is making myself nervous and wishing it was 2.5 hours later.

radar
The radar shows some possible light rain coming down from the north.  It doesn't look like it'll get any worse than that, and might just be cool and damp if things die down as it comes in.  My guess would be that they'll find a way to get the game in.

by RockieRooter on Oct 14, 2007 4:30 PM MDT reply actions

Of course
They will.. Unless conditions are absolutely impossible to play in, this game will be played.

by arosenthal on Oct 14, 2007 5:35 PM MDT reply actions

Prediction
Rockies score 2 in the first, Fogg pitches 4 strong, gives up the lead in the 5th, gets pulled in the 6th, Rocks rally for 5 in the 6th.

Final score: Good Guys 9   Snakes 4

On the other hand, if there is an abnormal amount of precipitation: rain delay in 3rd, upon play resuming, Eric Byrnes slips trotting out to his position and breaks his leg. Then we never have to see him do a somersault on a throw to the cut-off man and Rockies win 45 to -6.

Man I love this site, just decided to join. Kudos to the regulars here.

It is...
Snowing where I live.

It is 34 degrees outside.

In other words, it is cold.

I was just down in Denver. It was drizzling, and 44 degrees. Sounds like fun!! Everyone will have to sit in the same corner of the dugout or something to keep warm.
