Is it okay...
to start talking about the next series and whining about the media?

Because Deadspin says Phillies in five because of their "dramatically better" hitting, and I'm calling no respect. I thought not making ignorant statements like these with no basis in fact was what made Deadspin better than ESPN, right? So much for that.

I'm still waiting
for Deadspin to put up my "Where My Team Stands: Colorado Rockies" piece.

Maybe Deadspin is going with the "MVP argument." The Phillies have three possible candidates and the Rockies have one? 3 > 1. That's the only way "dramatically better" hitting could apply. In some odd, convoluted way, that is.

Where my team stands: Colorado Rockies
Same old, same old. Ignored, underapreciated, but watch out.

Watch out
is right.  The Rox always play better as the under dog w/ no respect and no expectations.  I love it, I hope everyone picks the Phils.  LETS GO ROCKIES!!!!!

I think you guys misunderstand what I wrote
in that post. I wrote a short piece for Deadspin and it should be up soon.

No, I got it
Congrats on getting the call for the Rox article. I was responding to this part of your post:

Predictions don't matter
Who cares what anybody thinks.  Whether the opinions ared educated or Kiszla-like, short series are unpredictable.

I read somewhere that the Rocks will lose because they aren't a good enough road team.  But they outscored their opponents on the road, and except for the 1-9 trip have been pretty good.

Rox had the number one run differential in the NL.  Rox pitching seems to be better than the Phils.  Offensively, their OBP is about the same.  Philly slugs better, but that may be due to their home park.

Both teams are on a great roll, so both should feel confident going in.

I'm just gonna sit back and enjoy it (if having 50 heart attacks during each game qualifies as enjoyment), and root root root for the home team.

Go Rockies!!!!

Phillies playoff roster released
The Phillies just announced their NLDS roster.  They're going with a 10-man pitching staff.

Lineup:
Ruiz
Howard
Utley
Rollins
Dobbs
Burrell
Rowand
Victorino

Bench:
Barajas
Coste
Iguchi
Nunez
Helms
Bourne
Werth

Rotation:
Hamels
Kendrick
Lohse
Moyer

Bullpen:
Myers
Gordon
Romero
Condrey
Mesa
Alfonseca

Geoff Geary was left off the roster due to injury. Carlos Ruiz is also battling an elbow injury.

Bolded for hilarity.

by malakian on Oct 2, 2007 12:59 PM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Just curious
but wasn't Geary one of their better relievers down the stretch, as well as the guy who seriously shut us down in that four-game set?

by SlamDunkTheFunk on Oct 2, 2007 1:17 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Wow
That is pretty putrid, beyond Hamels, Meyers, and Gordon.

Adam Eaton
is the big name left off.

1st round playoff rosters are not finalized until 10 AM on Wednesday so the Phils can still make changes between now and then.

Will he be on our playoff roster? I sure hope not.
Holliday for MVP and Tulowitzki for ROY.

I took that video
Just wanted to thank Russ for posting my video over here.

We had actually been sitting in 315 until the middle of the 13th. My buddy wanted to leave and I wanted to see it closer. So we went down to the lower level.

After the two doubles and the triple, the usher was just standing there cheering and clapping her hand against her inflatable purple bat. So we went all the way down.

Just in time for the best ending in Denver Sports History. (and I'm a Broncos fan, so that's saying something)

A taste of what last night was like..
For those who couldn't make it, some moments from last night:
  • Walking to the park, we passed a cab driver.  He was driving a purple cab and told me, in heavily accented English, that the Rockies would win because of his purple taxi.
  • The chants of MVP!  were the single loudest thing I've ever heard at Coors.  It was spine-tingling.
  • A few aborted attempts at The Wave were met with scorn.
  • Heath Bell is fat.   But good.
  • The playoff bunting was a beautiful sight to see.  They had it up over the weekend, but it didn't seem official until last night.
  • The person who runs the stuff that goes over the PA -- bits of organ music, chant starters, etc. -- did a really great job.  He or she kept the crowd going all night, even when we were exhausted.  And it was never intrusive.  Just right.
  • The guy who participated in that "you have 25 seconds to replace 2nd base and get to the dugout" contest was really, really slow.  he didn't make it in time and the crowd booed him lustily.  We were in no mood for failure of any kind.
  • I was in the Pavillion, about 15 rows behind Holliday.  When the fireworks went off, they were directly above us.  I felt like I was in that final scene in The natural.
  • Walking out, I saw hundreds of people with hands raised looking for high fives.  My palm hurt by the time we exited.
  • Outside, on Blake, cars were honking their horns -  DA DA DA -- to which the walking throngs responded by chanting M V P, M V P
  • My 11 year old son converted his cap to create his first ever rally cap.  he didn't take it off from the 9th inning until the end of the game.    As i write this, he still hasn't taken off his Helton jersey he wore to the game.
  • I'm ready right now to go back to Coors.  Saturday can't come soon enough.

I was so glad to hear
that the Wave was shot down. I hate it in regular-season games and watching it in a playoff game would have driven me nuts.

And man, you're making me want to find a cheap flight and head home for the weekend. WHY do I have to be in NY? WHY?

Dude...
I might've been in your row.  Sec 153, Row 14 was where I was.  I had a perfect view of Holliday's eighth inning goof.  I know why he missed that one, when it came off the bat coming right at me, I thought it was an infield pop-up.  Unfortunately, we we're both wrong... but it's okay now.

by MattTheRock on Oct 2, 2007 3:28 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yes...
and more:
  • At the end, I noticed about six or seven Rockies over by the dugout, dancing in circles with their arms around each other.
  • Tulo was dead serious in his post-game interview: we have work to do.
  • The crowd must have spent half the game on their feet.
  • the MVP chant was truly spine-chilling. Coolest thing ever.
  • Those Tu-Lo! chants were cool, too.
  • Matt was either woozy or crying when they showed him in the clubhouse hugging the boys. It was cute.
  •  according to my Dad, Matt also gave the most incoherent interview ever. Aww...
  • Rocky Mountain News has some great pics today.
  • I haven't stopped smiling since. Oh my god. The Rox are going to do this. I'm so excited!!!!

Sec 153
We were real close to one another -- I was in 153, Row 17.

And one other memory -- my son now has a new favorite phrse, which he unfortunately picked up last night from dad.

The kids been walking around the house yelling "JULIO, YOU SUCK!"

Nice role model I am.

Are we just happy to be here?
The overwhelming feeling I get from everyone, including the players in interviews last night, is that everyone is just happy to have gotten this far. Do you think the Rockies can compose themselves enough to take on a Phillies team that is playing great baseball right now?
Juuuust a bit outside.

yeah that's the thing
philly is a great baseball team, with great baseball players who make big plays on the baseball field.  jimmy rollins is the kind of guy you want to turn loose so he can make plays.  chase utley is a dynamic offensive threat.  ryan howard is a guy who really makes great baseball plays on the baseball field.  the rockies certainly have their work cut out for them.

Mark Redman
Not that I put a lot of faith in these things but Yahoo! sports is showing that Redman will be the game 2 starter.  That doesn't seem right to me. i'm thinking that Frankie will get a turn.  What are your thoughts?

by Blake20th on Oct 2, 2007 3:23 PM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Starters
I heard Francis, Morales and Ubaldo for games 1-3.  Then I would expect Fogg for game 4 and Francis for game 5.

That works for me
I wonder if I'm the only one who is a little disenchanted with Francis lately.  Anyone else a little nervous that Jeff is taking the hill?

I have full confidence in
Jeff Francis pitching like Jeff Francis.  I'm hoping for him to be superman, but at the end of the day, all we can really expect is for him to perform to his capabilities.  He didn't do that in Philly, but I thought he did against Arizona and I think he'll be fine tomorrow.

by David OhNo on Oct 2, 2007 3:45 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That's what I heard from Buck Martinez
who was hearing this from others in the press box yesterday (via XM).  However, I wouldn't put it past Hurdle to do such a thing.

Correct me if I'm worng, but we only have two injury exmption spots for the playoff roster right?

Since Morales was sent down prior to the cut off day, he would need one, and if they wanted Speier, he'd need one too.  So that would make it tough to get Seth Smith on the playoff roster.

And if I'm wrong and it's quite easy to put Smith on it, I would lean towards keeping both Stewart and Smith over Baker.  The Phillies only have J.C. Romero as a lefty in that pen, and thanks to our normal lineup pattern, there's typically two righties in front of the pitcher's spot (assuming Taveras gets healthy or Spillborghs is the primary starter), making it tougher to conserve that lefty specialist for a pinch hitter with Helton and Hawpe in the interior part of the order.

If match-ups and splits are key, then I'd rather have the two lefty hitters than one lefty and one righty, when you consider that Iannetta and Carroll will already be on that bench as righties.

by David OhNo on Oct 2, 2007 3:41 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Morales
was already on the 40 man roster....so he doesn't need an "exemption"

If you were not on the 40 man roster by September 1st.....THEN you need the exemption.

by sg8335aa on Oct 2, 2007 4:03 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

25, or 40?
He stayed on the 40 but he wasn't on the 25 at the deadline.

I thought that it was for the 25 man roster but I might be wrong.

New Denver Post article
http://www.denverpost.com/rockies/ci_7063524

It looks like they're going with a 12-man pitching staff.
It looks like Julio is on the roster.  Stewart and Taveras also will not be included (sent to instructs).

Torrealba
Helton
Matsui
Tulo
Atkins
Holliday
Spilborghs
Hawpe

Iannetta
Carroll
Sullivan
Two of Baker/Smith/Koshansky/Barmes/Quintanilla

Francis
Morales
Jimenez
Fogg

Corpas
Fuentes
Hawkins
Herges
Affeldt
Buchholz
Speier
Julio

I hope Patrick Saunders is mistaken about this.

by malakian on Oct 2, 2007 3:54 PM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The article isn't very clear.
Considering borderline players like Baker, Julio and Redman aren't mentioned.

by malakian on Oct 2, 2007 3:56 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

In fairness...
Saunders didn't name every pitcher that wasn't on the roster... just four (Morillo, Ortiz, Bautista, and Serafini). That still leaves some questions unanswered. Also, there's a pretty clear implication that the Rox will keep six bench players, meaning they'll go with 11 arms.

Check that
Oops... I guess they are going with 5 bench players. Forgot that one of the Sullivan/Spilborghs pair will be starting in center.

by Franchise26 on Oct 2, 2007 3:58 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The article is kind of vague.
Josh Newman(although unlikely) and Mark Redman weren't mentioned, so perhaps one of those two would make the roster over Julio.

by malakian on Oct 2, 2007 4:07 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I actually don't hate this...
if the extra guy is somebody like Redman instead of somebody like Julio.

In the playoffs, you have to have a quick hook. This could be a pretty high scoring series. We're gonna need guys who can chew up innings. If we've got an 8-man pen full of one-inning guys, it's a waste. But having Buchholz, Herges, and Redman as capable innings eaters (and having one of them be a lefty, which won't hurt against Howard and Utley) isn't so bad.

Just as long as one of them isn't pinch-hitting in the ninth inning of a one-run game at any point, I think I'm alright with this.

mvn.com/mlb-rockies - Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.

by Franchise26 on Oct 2, 2007 4:01 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Cook....
If you consider the fact that we have 2 rookies and Josh Fogg as 3 of our 4 starters, then you understand the move.

We DON'T know how those guys will handle the playoffs (hell we dont' even know about Francis).  If 1-2 guys choke and have to leave after the 2nd or 3rd inning, we're gonna need those starters.

Without a playoff rotation of Francis, Cook, Lopez and 1 spot between Jimenez/Morales/Hirsh/Fogg........we're forced into this move.

I don't really like it either.....but its a huge risk when you consider the inexperience of our staff.

by sg8335aa on Oct 2, 2007 4:06 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

However on the flip side
you could make the case that if we are forced into using the seven relievers, we're in trouble anyways.

It's a matter of personal preference, but I'd rather have a roster geared at attacking the opponent's weakness rather than building one on worse case scenario.  If you're already heading down that track, you aren't likely to recover anyways.

Congratulations!!!!  As an Angels fan I would like to  say i am happy for fans of the Rockies.  I always have to put up with Dodger fans and I am happy that a team with more talent and better fans can appreciate  a playoff appearance unlike Dodger or Yankee fans.  Also kicking the Dodgers around was great too.  Good luck.

Boras is at it already...

The good:

I'll be at Game 3 on Saturday, thanks to a buddy in Denver that got tickets.  Frequent travel pays off, as I was able to use frequent flier miles in lieu of the $1260 fare!

I can't wait.  This will be my first professional post-season game of any sort.

by Gumbo on Oct 2, 2007 5:34 PM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

WHA?
Boras thinks Andruw Jones is worth 20 million dollars? Yeah, I guess that's about right considering the fact he's coming off his worst year and isn't the defensive player he used to be...

Wait.

Wait. Hold on. Did that say 20 million A YEAR?

Holy shit. It did. Scott Boras must have testicles the size of Jupiter to make that his initial offer.

At this rate, when he becomes a free agent in two years, Boras will set the bidding for Matt Holliday at 'eleventy billion dollars'. Per year.

mvn.com/mlb-rockies - Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.

Holliday
Maybe you'd make a better point if you used a real number.  Who's to say Holliday will do the same thing this season in the next 2 years.  If he does, maybe he could get 15-20 (maybe not 20 though).   Jones probably won't get 20 anyway.

by Lord Manhammer on Oct 2, 2007 7:32 PM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Just last off season
Carlos Lee (also a Boras client) got 18 Million per year for 3 years.  Holliday plays the same position, and plays better defense, and may have and MVP trophy

I see 20 million per year for Holliday at the minimum

Resign Kazuo Matsui! Hurdle is still an idiot!

by Redhawk on Oct 2, 2007 9:54 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Also
Holliday will be a free agent when the Red Sox will be looking for a left fielder to replace Manny.... He'll get a $20 million offer at the least. Hopefully the Rockies come close to matching, close enough to warrant consideration.

by arosenthal on Oct 2, 2007 11:45 PM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not a Boras client
Carlos Lee isn't a Boras client.  One reason the Astros signed him was that he decided NOT to use Boras last year.  (The Astros have refused to deal with Boras since the Beltran negotiations when he played them like a fiddle in maximizing a deal with NY.) And Lee's contract is for 5 years, not 3.  I think there's an option for year 6.

I could be wrong (or outdated) on this, but one rumored reason for trading Taveras was that he had retained Boras.

It's an interesting dynamic:  do mid-market teams like the Astros & Rox shoot themselves in the foot by not dealing with Boras, thereby withdrawing from some key free agent bidding?  Do some players actually hurt their signing prospects by retaining Boras & thereby being off-limits to Boras-hating teams?

For what it's worth, I think the proper approach to deal with Boras is clients is negotiate regarding players on your roster you need to retain, but stay away from Boras free agents off other teams.

The Andruw Jones situation will be interesting to watch.  What Beltran did for Boras' reputation (he gets top dollar for his clients), Jones may un-do.  What Jones ultimately gets may be so far under the ridiculous $20 mil asking price that the "Boras factor" may be perceived as a negative rather than a positive.

The Braves & Schuerholz are about as good as anyone at talent/value analysis.  That they're passing on a longtime player should set off warning signs to other teams:  Jones isn't worth anything close to $20 mil.  He wasn't worth $13.5 mil this year.  His low average and high strikeout totals suggest he should really get a salary cut.  If there's any rationality to the free agent market at all (there may not be), that will happen.
