Monday Morning Rockpile:

4. What is Boston's biggest advantage?
Josh Beckett. He is the hottest pitcher in the world. In his postseason career, he has a 1.78 ERA. Of pitchers with at least eight career postseason starts, only Christy Mathewson and George Earnshaw, neither of whom has pitched in the last 70 years, have a lower ERA than Beckett. In this postseason, he has been dominant. He has thrown 297 pitches, 210 for strikes, in three starts. The Indians had no chance against him in two starts in the ALCS.

Tim Kurkjian goes on to say that this god Beckett might start three games against the Rockies, the presumption being that he'll win all three. Sound familiar?

"...in the NLCS, nobody comes close to Webb."

"Other than Brandon Webb, there are no elite starters..."

"The Rockies have a very good pitcher in Jeff Francis, but they don't have a dominant frontline ace like Hamels. Hamels will make two starts (if necessary) and win both (again, if necessary)."

"But Cole Hamels is a difference maker at the top of the Philly rotation, and there's enough uncertainty in the No. 2 through No. 4 spots on the Rockies' staff to make you wonder...Phillies in 3."

Does this story ever change? When does Jeff Francis evolve from quaint Canuck into a legit big game ace? Jeffrey Franchise is now 2-0 in the postseason with a 2.13 ERA, and while not quite Beckett's 5-2 with a 1.78, the guess here is that all it should take is a victory in Game One for Francis to become media's new poster-boy.

Alright. Next vent. Let's say you are trying to compare a group of hitters to determine who was best, and over about 450 PA's you had three tiers:

Group A: Let's just call them ALl Stars -are maybe five guys hitting really well, and that's who everybody pays attention to.

Group B: Next Level, these guys are okay, but flawed and clearly a step below the cream of the crop.

Group C: Well, not actually a group -one guy really- let's name him Charlie Rose because I really dig PBS. Anyway, Charlie at this 450 PA mark is probably at the bottom of the Next Level group, but still in it.

So I've made it obvious what the set-up is. The ALl Stars continue to play pretty well over their next few PA's, the Next Level guys continue to do their step below thing, but Charlie goes off the hook. Completely destroying everything in his path. Mysteriously, after about 525 PA's all but eight of these guys from all three groups get injured and their seasons are over. Charlie's one of the eight still playing, and he's still raking. Sure a few of his hits are of the bloop single variety, but his streak is really becoming DiMaggio-esque. Four more teams get season ending injuries a few PA's later. Then two more go down and suddenly it's just Charlie and one other guy from the ALl Star group, let's just call him BIG RED SLUGGER. And his name is always capitalized like that in all the papers for some reason. BRS has been able to put up some more gaudy numbers the last few games, and still looks on paper to be the better hitter overall, even though Charlie's been gaining and is clearly now better than all of the Next Level guys. Would you ignore these last 100 PA's and go back to before Charlie's streak to judge these players? Would you go back to where the others' seasons ended? Or would you take the whole enchilada preferring to get as many data points as possible for any of these guys?

So let's say the whole season for these two players' teams comes down to one final game between the two. Winner gets into the playoffs. Charlie goes four for four with a homerun or two, his team wins while BIG RED SLUGGER goes zero for four with four K's in the losing effort. BRS's season stats might still be a tad better than Charlie's even after all that. Do you still say that BIG RED SLUGGER is the MVP? What if both end up having great games and Charlie's team wins? What if they lose? Is Charlie good enough to be considered worthy of the ALl Stars' status?

I bring this up because you and I will read a lot of NL as junior varsity articles over the coming days. A lot of pundits and non-pundits alike will try to downplay and even toss aside the team's accomplishments this year and that irks me. Joe Sheehan in a chat at Baseball Prospectus the other day said that he could still argue that Detroit and Seattle (88-74, outscored 794-813, Colorado's now 97-73, outscoring the opposition 894-774) are better teams than the Rockies. Even Meredith Veira on the Today Show apparently:

On October 22nd after reporting on The Red Sox's win against Cleveland on The Today Show Meredith Vieira said... "I think it's safe to say The Red Sox will win The World Series"  How does that make you feel Rockies Fans? I wasn't too happy with that so I wrote an email to The Today show and I think we should get as many Rockies Fans as we can to do the same.    Write to Today@nbc.com and let Meredith know what you think about her comment!!!!!!

That from an e-mail from Sandra Elkind. Thanks Sandra for pointing it out.

I just want the team to be given a fair look. The AL's better than the NL, fine. Point taken. Colorado's better than the NL, too, though and don't you forget it. What's sad is I don't think even a four game sweep will change anybody's opinion about us, as once again they will point to how the Red Sox just got unlucky, how it was mysterious that their lineup of sluggers was suddenly unable to hit against the Rockies' inferior pitching. Don't get me wrong, I think Boston's still had the clearly superior season, (outscored their opponents 937 to 693 so far) but Seattle and Detroit? Come on. Maybe when we win again in 2008 will these people finally recognize that maybe we actually do have a good team in Colorado.

Good luck getting tix everybody!

As always
The mainstream presses are run by idiots and should be ignored. For what it's worth, Baseball Prospectus (known Sox lovers) is favoring the Rockies in this series:

Rockies chance to win WS: 56.3%
Red Sox chance to win WS: 43.7%

Favorites
They are basing this off of the idea that Boston doesn't do well against LHP, of which the Rockies will start two and the idea that the Rockies hit RHP better than LHP and the Red Sox will start all RHP.

My simulator is only giving the Red Sox approximately a 52% win probability in Game #1, while Vegas and Log5 are giving the Red Sox a Game #1 win probability of around 65%.

Fairness to Rockies Fans = King Soopers Outlets
If the Rockies org. truly wanted to make this fair to COLORADOANS they would have distributed the points of sale to all 270 metro area and mountain King Soopers.  This would have thwarted ticket brokers from hiring hundreds of homeless people to stand in line at Coors field.  I'm a very, very incensed.

According to earlier reports...
...the ticketing system peaked at 500 tickets/minute for the earlier series.  Assuming the same maximum rate, it will take approx. 5 hours for 150,000 tickets to sell out.

3 games x 50k = 150,000 (tickets)
150,000 / 500 = 300 (minutes)
300 /60 = 5 (hours)

by Gumbo on Oct 22, 2007 10:45 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not Correct
There were only 17 thousand tickets available for purchase to each of hte world series games.

So that means 51 thousand TOTAL

That's what assumptions get you...
...and my assumption was that all 50k seats per game were available - I guess I'm forgetting about season ticket holders and all sorts of other things.

Oh well, that's still 100+ minutes.

The whole "online only" BS.  The girl at the dugout store on the 16th street mall said that the Rockies didn't have the manpower for in-person ticket sales.  God forbid they should bring in temporary staff.  Now we're competing with anybody on the planet with internet access.  Even dirty Red Sox fans.

Nice!
(AP/CBS4) DENVER A mad rush for World Series seats got under way Monday as the Colorado Rockies put as many as 60,000 tickets up for sale, but only online. The company that runs the servers hosting the online ticket sales program reported a problem late Monday morning with the system and said "only a few tickets had been sold."

The company, Paciolan, Inc. which runs evenue.net, said it didn't know exactly what the problem was and that it was working to fix the issue.

Purple Playoff Tickets Prayer
Of all that is good and just. Please listen to this humble prayer. Please let some of us loyal Rockies fans get in! We are the ones who have watched for years before this. We are the ones who know the players' middle names. We are the ones who watched when the Rockies were in last place and nowhere near the playoffs. We are the ones that tape Rockies all access and tape the games we go to in person, just to see the pre and post game or just watch a few plays over. We are the ones that know that Jamey Carroll likes the Colts and that Garrett Atkins loves cookies. We are the ones who have the boys in purple all over our rooms and houses, with Rockies comforters on our beds. We are the REAL fans! We don't just switch to the Rockies from the Broncos because they are the cool thing to watch..we have always watched them, good, bad, or otherwise. Please let some real fans go PLEASE!!!!

I think you have to use him
Game 4 should give us a little leeway anyway because Boston's going to have to make a tough decision for that start also. I think putting Morales in the pen as a rescue for either Fogg or Cook should they get in trouble makes a lot of sense and won't minimize our utilization of his talent.

by Rox Girl on Oct 22, 2007 12:40 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I like Cook,
don't get me wrong, but I'm just not sure. Franklin could have pitched longer in Game 4, but was definitely better to have a better hitter in. He always looks nervous (he always has). It's just the way he is. He moves a lot when he does his "prep-routine" because that's just his personality. It would probably be better for him if he lessened the amount of things he does beter he pitches. As for Cook, he hasn't pitched a real game since Aug 10. He's got the seniority, but is the World Series really the place to comeback... I would think not as a starter. I would think that he would be better as a relief (like Fogg was). I'm sure that they will start Cook, but I hope that it's not a mistake.

means everyone regardless of location gets an equal shot at tickets. What you suggest as fair is in fact the opposite - it would be a system biased towards a certain group. As a local, that would be find by me.

That might be the right way to do it, but it's not the fair way.

Cook
I am very conflicted about Cook coming back. They mentioned something about keeping morales and having buchholz go off the roster. Cook has faced Boston this season and despite a heartbreaking loss 2-1, he did pitch very well. He is probably more mentally equipped than Franklin is, but Frankie's a toughie...so very much turmoil involved in being a rockies fan....

This sucks...
I'm on the countdown screen, starving, and afraid to move away because I'm scared the moment that I do, it will magically access the site and they'll be four Rockpile tickets sitting there for me.

Here's my idea...
Since we've obviously seen that this just doesn't work, we should be solutions oriented.  Let's all brainstorm an effective way to fairly distribute the tickets among the public (can you tell I'm at work?).

I'm thinking gladitorial brawl.  It's fair, and would eliminate the Red Sox quotient.

A few thoughts on the WS:
a) The team that Todd Helton is on is going to beat the team that he could have been on. Because that's the ultimate poetic capper to this crazy season.

b) This series reminds me strongly of 2003. Powerhouse east coast team vs. scrappy 1993 expansion team, nobody gives the latter a chance, they win it in six. Oh, and Josh Beckett was on the winning side last time. Irony's a bitch this time... Seeing as the Sawx are now the Yankees, this couldn't be any more appropriate.

c) If we DO have all these purported angels flying around in the outfield, why are they going to let us down now? Who do they have to compete with, Cryogenically Frozen Ted Williams?

d) We've lost one game since the middle of September. Why are we going to lose four in a week and a half?

e) Last year a "powerhouse" American League team was picked to take down the inferior National League team in "three." We all saw how that turned out.

f) Rust, schmust. The White Sox had six days off in 2005 and swept the Astros. Seven of ten teams with five or more days off swept the Series. It's all in their heads, and they don't think it'll matter. We'll be rested, ready, and focused.

g) The Rockies have that winning mentality (AND IT TOOK THE HELL LONG ENOUGH!) Even if they lose Game 1, as they might (or might not) they're not going to collapse like a tent. It'll be a good series.

h) The Red Sox play in the AL, sure. The AL East, and that is a pair of 800-lb gorillas squashing the fragile baby chimps. They get to feast on the Blue Jays, D-Rays, and Orioles.

i) We play in the National League West, which -- hold the phone! -- is a better division top to bottom, with the exception of the Giants. Our road stats are also somewhat skewed by the fact that we play so much at Petco and Dodger Stadium, two of the most extreme pitcher's parks in the majors.

j) Was the series in June just a small sample size? Yeah, but so is the Series. It gives the guys the psychological edge to know they can win there. At that time, the Red Sox were far and away the best team in baseball, and the only other team to win a series against them at Fenway was the Yankees. Josh Beckett was still undefeated and we tagged him for six runs and ten hits in five innings. Atkins hit a grand slam over the Monster. Later on, Holliday also hit a homer over the Monster. Atkins' double was off the very top. Who's scared of that ridiculous wall?

k) We've dealt with yahoos, bozos, and morons in the opposing city before. See: Philadelphia.

l) However, it is imperative that we do not allow Coors to turn into Fenway West. If this crazy ticket situation is ever resolved, those of you who do go had better cheer twice as much.

m) Wakefield and Matsuzaka will not fare well in Coors. Nor will Manny in that cavernous left field and Ortiz attempting to play first.

I still stand by my prediction that it'll be the Rockies in five. Maybe six. Will it be easy? Hell no. That's not our style. Never a blowout or two to soothe the nerves. Will I be hiding under the desk when Fuentes faces Youkilis/Papi/Ramirez in the bottom of the eighth at a crazy Fenway? Hell yeah. Are we gonna win it? Hell yeah.

During an early season AZ game...
...Spilly made a start, and the AZ announcers took to calling him "The Director" every time they referred to him.  By the time the game was done, and he was their "Player of the Game" they renamed him "The Producer."

This was about the time that I stopped lamenting my lack of ability to choose the feed via MLB Extra Innings.  When we get love from opposing announcers, it can be as enjoyable as Goodman and Huson/Frazier at their best.

That must have been May 22 or 23...
when Spilly made a start, had both RBIs, Francis pitched seven shutout innings, and we won 2-0 to start off that seven-game streak...

Seems like yesterday, huh?

It does...
...as I was typing, I was hoping that it was an early season game.  I mean, I was pretty sure, but it did feel like only yesterday.

Seriously, the derision this club used to receive at the hands of out of town announcers used to make it tough to watch.  This year, though, nothing but respect.

That'd be
one amazing makeup job for De Niro to play Helton.

Casting Director: De Niro wants to play Helton.

Executive Producer: Yeah . . . wait, isn't he 30 years older than Helton?

CD: Uh, it's De Niro. Are you going to say no?

EP: Of course not, but--get me the makeup department.

(Enter new character)

Makeup Person: What's the problem here?

EP: Can you make De Niro look thirty years younger than he is?

MP: Get a beard on him and we shouldn't have any problem.

Here's the whole article
about Spilly's filmmaking ambitions, complete with his cast:

http://www.denverpost.com/rockies/ci_7244597

I love this part:

Flush with playoff share money and a feel-good script, Spilborghs landed stars from the A-list. Still no A-Rod. But A-list, nonetheless. Their presence made Spilborghs ditch his original idea of a "Blair Witch Project" - video-style, using a handheld cam during his starts in the outfield.

The 8.5 million number is misleading
Hits is the number of times the server records a page load, not a visitor. This probably reflects 1 or 2 million people averaging 4-8 refreshes before giving up. If they had said 8.5 million unique visits, then it might be Sox fans trying to get tickets.

In your defense...
he was basically saying "We have a team, therefore we win." Which is pretty much the attitude I've found most Sox fans take. They could care less about scouting the other team, they just want to revel in the glory of the ridiculous Red Sox and ignore facts...speaking of which, the only real analysis of the series was that the Sox won without Manny or Ortiz producing in games 3-5, which is doubleplusuntrue, by any definition of the word "produce."

I doubt 8 million unique visitors
I suspect they counted 'hits' i.e. every time someone refreshed the screen was a new hit.  I was probably responsible for 500 visits by myself.

Not that I'm defending anyone...
...but remember,  we aren't talking about some guy forgetting to install extra memory in a desktop PC deep within the bowels of Coors.

We're talking about a major player in online ticketing (Paciolan), who sold about 25% of all live events in the US last year, over 100 million tickets all told.

Also, whatever the problem was took down all North American sales, not just the Rockies.  At this point, we don't know if the WS ticket debacle had anything to do with it, but my own gut tells me it was somehow related.

Ticketmaster is about to acquire Paciolan, and Ticketmaster sold about 120 million tickets last year - it's Paciolan's penetration into sporting events (pro and college) that Ticketmaster wants into.  This is not some fly by night operation that offered to help the Rox move a few tickets for a cheap rate.

As for the 8.5M hits, yeah, no way these were unique visits, but how many people out there were doing what I was doing?  That includes my Mom online, my wife online, my brother online, and my nephew online.  Of course, I was online, and refreshing in both Firefox and IE.  After a while, I was on my iPhone too.  The fact that we were having problems made us refresh more, get more friends on, try from other PCs, and so on, so I feel those numbers are inflated - had we been getting tickets, we wouldn't have been generating as many hits.

I just hope that when they are ready to sell, that they announce it and give us a reasonable heads up.  You talk about sticking it to the real fans, I've been checking the Post, the Rocky, 9News, News4, and Channel 7 every 15-20 minutes for updates, fearful to let my guard down that I might miss my chance.

You smell that? Do you smell that? Baseball in October, son. Nothing else in the world smells like that. I love the smell of Baseball in October.
