World Series Game #1: Francis vs Beckett

More surprising for me than Ryan Spilborghs being in the lineup in the first place -Seth Smith would have been a fine option, but you've got to admit this is a huge stage to make your starting debut on- would be that Clint Hurdle elected to have him bat ninth.

Colorado:

   1. Willy Taveras, CF
   2. Kaz Matsui, 2B
   3. Matt Holliday, LF
   4. Todd Helton, 1B
   5. Garrett Atkins, 3B
   6. Brad Hawpe, RF
   7. Troy Tulowitzki, SS
   8. Yorvit Torrealba, C
   9. Ryan Spilborghs, DH

Boston:

   1. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
   2. Kevin Youkilis, 1B
   3. David Ortiz, DH
   4. Manny Ramirez, LF
   5. Mike Lowell, 3B
   6. Jason Varitek, C
   7. J.D. Drew, RF
   8. Julio Lugo, SS
   9. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF

I mean, I know Yorvit's been on a roll this postseason, but Tulo certainly has not. For me it would have made more sense to switch Troy and Ryan for this game until Tulo gets his bearings back.

At any rate, I kind of like our chances tonight with Francis on the mound.

Go Rockies!

My prediction
Beckett will take Game 1 against the Rockies just like Webb in the LCS, Hamels in the LDS and Peavy in the tiebreaker.
Every day is a Holliday!

Relax, it's just the first game and Beckett
is the pitcher on the other team tonight. Sit back and enjoy what should be the most interesting game in baseball this year. If the Rockies have a rough time tonight, it's not to get too upset over. If the Rockies win, great we will all have all that much more to cheer about. GO ROCKIES! Sox Suck.

I gotta say
between Kyle Blakeman, Mike Coolbaugh, Florinda George, and all our other ghosts and good karma, if maybe we do have a little help, then -- well, call it fate, luck, destiny, or magic, but I don't see 'em bringing us this far just to bring us to a crashing halt. Clearly, we can't put any stock in this, and the players need to bring their A-games against Beckett and the Sawx, but if we do what we've been doing, I have confidence that we'll get a little of that purple spark when it's needed.

Simulator: Series Analysis
Hot off the simulator.  Assuming that the pitching matchups that are projected stay the same the simulator came up with the following game win probabilities and series winner probability.

G1: Boston 52.1%
G2: Rockies 51.85%
G3: Rockies 51.4%
G4: Rockies 54.45%
G5: Red Sox 50.35%
G6: Rockies 51.85%
G7: Red Sox 54.6%
Series winner: Rockies 51.002%

Let's look at the series with Beckett pitching in games 1,4,7, moving Lester to game 5 and Dice-K losing his game 7 start to Beckett and assuming the short rest doesn't effect Beckett's performance.

G1: Red Sox 52.1%
G2: Rockies 51.85%
G3: Rockies 51.4% (first 3 games the same)
G4: Red Sox 54.04% (Beckett vs Cook)
G5: Rockies 53.56% (Lester vs Francis)
G6: Rockies 51.85%
G7: Red Sox 57.88% (Fogg vs Beckett)
Series winner: Red Sox 51.667%

The simulator has this as being a tight series.  Enjoy the winning streak while you can.

I had
vs The DBacks I had the DBacks winning game #1 and the Rockies winning 2,3,4.  Vegas had the DBacks winning games 1,2 and Rockies winning 3,4.

vs The Phillies... I had game 1 as a tossup, Vegas took the Phils, I had game 2 going to the Phils, but Vegas with more certainty, game 3 had both Vegas and I with the Rockies as heavy favorites.

vs Padres (Play-in game)... I had the Rockies as very very slight favorites and Vegas had SD as heavy faves.

My simulator using 2007 ZIPS projections, picked the Red Sox to beat the Cubs in the W.S. (before the season started).

Track record is all available for the entire season at the site.  Thanks for asking though.  Hope that helps.

An omen
Many teams have dominated their respective leagues over the course of baseball history, but few have been able to totally demoralize their competition like the 1927 Yankees. Their lineup, appropriately dubbed "Murderer's Row," featured five .300 hitters. Among their ranks were the league leaders in virtually every offensive category; Babe Ruth's record 60 homers and 158 runs, AL MVP Lou Gehrig's 175 RBIs, and Earle Combs' 231 base hits all topped the Junior Circuit. As a team, the Bronx Bombers totaled over 100 more home runs than any other team and posted league highs with a .307 batting average and an amazing .489 slugging percentage.

As the Washington Senators discovered in early July, the Yankees would waste no time in swiftly disposing any team that dared to challenge their supremacy. The Senators had won ten in a row heading into an Independence Day doubleheader at Yankee Stadium. In the process, they had leapfrogged the Philadelphia Athletics and Chicago White Sox to take second place and had pulled within ten games of the first-place Yankees.

No matter. In front of a record crowd, the Yankees destroyed the Senators 12-1 in the opener and utterly humiliated them in the second game by a 21-1 margin. After the game, Washington first baseman Joe Judge summed it up. "Those fellows not only beat you but they tear your heart out. I wish the season was over."

COC Rule #4
In that vein, posts of intolerance and personal attacks are unacceptable. Highlighting differences or using inflammatory rhetoric against somebody's nationality, race, gender, sexuality or religion could be cause for getting booted off the site. For a couple of examples: Aaron Miles is a bum because he can't take a walk, not because he's a short white guy. Byung Hyun Kim gets on our ire for his inconsistency in pitching, not his common English as a second language difficulty. For other users, be considerate even in total disagreement. There are various levels of baseball knowledge on the site, and if your level of understanding is greater than mine or another user's, it doesn't mean that we're idiots. Explain what you know and move on without name calling or denigration. On the other hand, be slow in taking offense when somebody disagrees with you. If you think another user (or even one of us) has gone too far, e-mail Russ or myself and let us know and we'll do our best to sort it out.

O rly?
"Ortiz used to hit homers like crazy with the Twins"?

According to my stats, in his six years with Minnesota, he hit 1, 9, 0, 10, 18, and 20 homers. I wouldn't exactly call that "hitting homers like crazy." Shit... Eric Freaking Byrnes hit 21 this year and 26 last year.

I'm a Rox fan, but only whenever they're playing against the AL or any California team.

by DbacksSkins on Oct 25, 2007 1:03 AM MDT up reply actions

Ortiz
You need to look a little closer at your stats, unless you believe Ortiz should have hit more homers than he had at bats, he was never a full time player with the Twins. Even in his 20 homer season with the Twins, he only played in 130 games. How many games did Byrnes play in?

ICKIMORE

P.S. As requested of me earlier, I provided a player by player scouting report to your website. I e-mailed it to Rox Girl yesterday. Hopefully she will put it up at some point.

Red Sox will destroy the Rox

by Ickimore on Oct 25, 2007 1:47 AM MDT up reply actions

Sorry pal, no vindication there.
Big Papi had 1477 ABs with the Twins, and slugged 58 HRs, or a home run approximately every 25.5 ABs. Eric Byrnes, who is most definitely NOT a big slugger, hit home runs every 25.3 ABs over the last two years.

Suddenly, Big Papi goes to Boston, and since then, he's had 2738 ABs, and he's smacked 208 HRs. That's a home run every 13.2 ABs.

That, my friend, is called a power surge. If you don't see anything suspicious about that, then I'd like to get my hands on some of whatever you're smoking.

I'm a Rox fan, but only whenever they're playing against the AL or any California team.

by DbacksSkins on Oct 25, 2007 2:01 AM MDT up reply actions

you list
Your list of his homers is incredibly biased to your opinion.

In 1997 you list Papi as having 1 home run, this is in fact true, but he only played in 15 freaking games!

Unlike Eric Byrnes, Papi was a HUGE strikeout liability in his early years. He struck out, as an example, 72 times in 86 games in 1998. Eric Byrnes as an example, struck out 71 times in 121 games in 2003. Byrnes strikeouts per at bat have actually increased since he went to Arizona, while Papi's have decreased since he came to Boston.

That's why he went from a 20 homer player with regular playing time to a 40 homer player with regular playing time. Because he stopped spending most of his at bats striking out.

In 2002 Ortiz struck out 87 times in 412 at bats. In 2007 Ortiz struck out 103 times in 549 at bats.

He put the ball in play more by striking out less. Instead of either hitting a homer or striking out, now he can do more.

Look at 1998, in 278 at bats he struck out 72 times. That's 1/3rd his at bats he would strike out!!!! Of course he didn't hit many homers, he was too busy striking out man!

ICKIMORE

steroids
You also forget the most telltale sign of somebody on steroids. Normally, a player goes on roids and their body changes at least a little. Bonds has a bigger head and is no longer skinny. McGwire grew bigger arms than most people have legs. Sosa went from a skinny speedster with a little pop to a hulk-like figure. But Ortiz was a fatass with the Twins, and he is still a fatass. How did his body change?

ICKIMORE

Red Sox will destroy the Rox

by Ickimore on Oct 25, 2007 2:21 AM MDT up reply actions

When you're as fat as Ortiz is,
it's going to be a little tough to notice the change. He's already got a huge head, so it'd be tough to notice that; similarly, he's never been a skinny guy since he's been in the majors, so you wouldn't expect to see the same change as Barry or Sammy.
I'm a Rox fan, but only whenever they're playing against the AL or any California team.

by DbacksSkins on Oct 25, 2007 8:08 AM MDT up reply actions

Okay.... so lemme get this straight.
So you were the one who said, "Ortiz used to hit homers like crazy with the Twins" and then I showed you that he did not, and you changed your tune to, "Well, of COURSE he didn't hit many home runs with the Twins, he was striking out all the time." I did indeed list Big Papi as hitting 1 home run in 1997, because he DID hit 1 home run in 1997. When I listed out his home run rates, I measured by at bats, not games. You also mention that Byrnes' strikeouts have increased since he's come to AZ. Since his HR rate has also increased, doesn't that somewhat undermine your argument with regards to Ortiz?

Let's compare similar seasons. In 2000, with the Twins, Papi had an AB/K rate of 5.1, in 415 ABs, and hit .282. Yet, he only hit 10 home runs, or 1 HR every 41.5 ABs. Last year, he struck out every 4.8 ABs, and had a .287 average, yet smacked 54 HRs. His strikeout rate actually increased, but his AB/HR rate shot up from 41.5 to a Bambino-like 10.3. In fact, he struck out at a lower rate during that 2000 season than in any of his seasons with Boston except for 2003 and 2007.

Your explanation doesn't hold water.

I'm a Rox fan, but only whenever they're playing against the AL or any California team.

ICKIMORE

Red Sox will destroy the Rox

by Ickimore on Oct 25, 2007 1:07 AM MDT up reply actions

Um, sorry, that's not gonna fly.
Youth is about more than straight up age, herr Ickimore. Beckett was drafted straight out of high school, in 1999, and made his big league debut in 2001. Francis was drafted out of college in 2002, and made his big league debut in 2004. Beckett's been playing professional baseball for 8 years, and he's essentially been pegged as the next big ace since his major league debut; not to mention the fact that he's already pitched in the 2003 World Series. The year after that, 2004, Francis was the Minor League POTY.

Beckett may only be a year older, but that's fallacious reasoning to say that's the only contributor to Francis' relative "youth".

by DbacksSkins on Oct 25, 2007 1:31 AM MDT up reply actions

Sorry
Sorry "herr" Southbytheborder, I guess I was using the primary dictionary definition of the word "young" in my analysis:

"1. being in the first or early stage of life or growth; youthful; not old: a young woman."

I should have discounted that definition and assumed that I was incorrect. Thanks for the correction.

ICKIMORE

Red Sox will destroy the Rox

In a sport...
...where some players are signed as free agents in their teens down in Latin America, and others can be drafted out of high school or even college, you can have players making their major league debut at any age from 17-27. Are you really going to tell me that you'd consider a 25 year old who's been in the league for, say, 5 years, younger than a 27 year old rookie? Youth has a different connotation in baseball than the strict dictionary definition.

Perhaps I should have said "inexperience", but I thought it was implied.

I'm a Rox fan, but only whenever they're playing against the AL or any California team.

Thanks for the explanation. So when 26 year old rookie Daisuke Matsuzaka pitches in game three will you also refer to him as young?

ICKIMORE

Red Sox will destroy the Rox

by Ickimore on Oct 25, 2007 2:27 AM MDT up reply actions

I'm split on that one.
  1. He is a rookie, in the MLB sense of the word, but
  2. He's pitched in the WBC, and
  3. He's pitched in the Japanese Leagues for awhile, which are not only an additional professional league, but probably the closest in ability to the US Major Leagues. If he has another rough playoff outing, I am inclined to chalk it up to youth, though.

Hey, smart guy,
the implication was that it was an obvious Red Sox fan thing to do to make the comment "typical Red Sox game" when the Sox hang up 7 runs in an inning.

It's called gloating. You don't say stuff like that on somebody else's board. Not to mention that his suggestion wasn't particularly helpful.

This is a key inning. Knock Beckett by the 6th and you have a chance to get to our weak part of the bullpen. In addition, you could get to the weak part of our bullpen, which will be key for tomorrow. Tire out Okajima and Boston is at a disadvantage.

I don't see that moment coming, since Francis barely was able to record any outs. If he has a dominating performance in game 5, then we may see that happen, but there was nothing by his performance tonight to suggest that anybody should bow down to the Francis idol, while for Beckett there clearly was.

Manny
When the Sox were down three games to one against Cleveland, Manny came out and said that it was no big deal if they lose, because there is always next year.

That's the way he plays all the time. Like he doesn't give a crap about the outcome. He gets hits because he likes to, not because the team needs him to. He throws out runners because he enjoys it, not because they need it, and he takes extra batting practice and shags extra flies because he likes doing it.

His whole deal is that he just wants to go out and have fun win or lose. He actually plays better when he's joking around and is laid back. That's just his deal.

If you take what he says or does seriously, you are totally misunderstanding his intentions.

Seems like every year during the offseason, he tries to get traded to another team, (at least he did before the Red Sox started buying championships) then when the regular season starts up, he makes a big deal to the press about how he's "So excited to be with the Boston Red Sox this year". Uh huh, yeah.

What a jerk.

Manny
#1, Manny only talks to the press during the playoffs. He didn't talk to any press in spring training, or at all during the season, even the local Boston press.

#2, If Manny couldn't play then you'd have a point. Find me a manager that wouldn't want Manny Ramirez and you might be on to something.

The point is, Manny can play, regardless of why he plays, he can play.

Let me ask you something, if Matt Holiday came out and said he only plays baseball so he can afford hot stone massages in the offseason, would you really give a darn why he plays?

That's the kind of crap Manny does, and most people are perfectly happen to have him on the team, because he's a darn good player.

Some people are "perfectly happy"
to have Barry Bonds as well, since he's a darn good player too. I'll tell you something right now, though; there's no room for egos like that (Barry or Manny) in the Arizona clubhouse, and I doubt very much there's room in the Colorado clubhouse, either. Don't believe me? Look up Jerry Colangelo's well-publicized conversation with Barry Bonds.

If Holliday were to say what you proposed? ::Shrug:: I wouldn't give a damn, but I assume Rockies fans would care. Were you similarly understanding when Johnny Damon left the Red Sox for the Yankees, since money is what drove him?

I'm a Rox fan, but only whenever they're playing against the AL or any California team.

by DbacksSkins on Oct 25, 2007 2:20 AM MDT up reply actions

Bonds
Not a lot of people dislike Bonds for his attitude to the press/fans, I believe the dislike of Bonds is more closely related to the steroid allegations, don't you agree?

I don't believe Manny falls into the Bonds category due to the lack of steroid allegations in Manny's history, and the lack of "Bad Attitude" signs by opposing fans when Bonds plays (as opposed to "Cheater" signs).

ICKIMORE

Red Sox will destroy the Rox

by Ickimore on Oct 25, 2007 2:31 AM MDT up reply actions

I would strongly disagree.
In fact, I'd say that a big reason why people chased Bonds to especially demonize him for using steroids, as opposed to, say, Sammy or.... heck, Luis Gonzalez, was because they already disliked Bonds for being such a jerk.

I wasn't comparing Manny to Barry because of the steroid allegations. I was comparing them because of Manny's me-first attitude.

I'm a Rox fan, but only whenever they're playing against the AL or any California team.

by DbacksSkins on Oct 25, 2007 8:13 AM MDT up reply actions

Damon
Actually, I was pretty happy when Johnny Damon left. He was starting to break down before his contract came up, and his style of play doesn't lend itself well to players in their mid and upper 30s. I thought he would hold up health-wise longer than he did, but I figured it would come far sooner than the end of the contract he wanted.

I was pretty excited about getting CoCo Crisp as his replacement also. Unfortunately, CoCo hasn't developed as a hitter the way I expected.

From Ken Rosenthal's entry:

"Criticism

Many fans of baseball think he doesn't know what he is talking about. A good example of this was during the '07 World Series game 1, bottom of 5th inning when he claimed the Rockies beat an over rated Cubs team.....when in fact the Rockies played the Philadelphia Philles in the first round."

there's not much to say
So anyway, God Bless America is turning into the new Star Spangled Banner.

No offense to any superpatriots but do we really need TWO drawn out anthems per game?

I'm in complete accord.
Play God Bless America on an organ, but enough with the singing. Female pop stars today turn it into a 15 minute ordeal.

Whatever happened
to "Take Me Out to the Ball Game"?

I wonder
Do they even sing that anymore?  I mean, I know that they DO sing it at ball games, but why not show it if you're going to show "God Bless Amer-er-er-er-er (key change) er-ica" at each game. And really, why are we still singing that? I thought it was just a short term thing after 9/11?

Admittedly
I think I have more hope for the Rockies than anyone else here, since I'm a Dbacks fan, so I saw my team get crushed by 10+ runs repeatedly during the regular season, then shrug it off, come back the next day, and win the next 3 games by 4 runs total.

Rox need some of that Dbacks mojo right now.

$11.50 for a hamburger
Yes it's pricey, but not over-the-top crazy, considering the ingredients are of a much higher quality than, say, your basic fast-food hamburger.  Plus you're paying for higher quality service and atmosphere.

by jakester @ Purple Row on Oct 24, 2007 9:40 PM MDT reply actions

Plus, they's
French. French hamburgers use specially extra-fattened meat, so it costs more.

Holy Lord...
Gibson did that in just the World Series? <long low whistle>

still no 1-2-3 inning
But Herges and Affeldt with two 1/3 good innings.

THIS is NOT an excuse, but man oh man did that balk call hurt us.  Plus the inability to get, you know, timely hits.  Morales needs to learn to get over that, but easy for me to say.  I'm not a rookie pitching in the World Series at Fenway.

by jakester @ Purple Row on Oct 24, 2007 9:46 PM MDT reply actions

Yeah,
I was just thinking about that balk call. Seemed to really throw him off his game.

That's what I was saying
about Frankie getting flustered easily. Same thing with the automatic ball calls. He's got great stuff, but he's pretty easy to rattle, and when he does get off, he gets REALLY off.

THE ROSENTHAL ARTICLE..
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7361216

only this time he changed the ending, the story was updated 2 DAYS ago.  It now says "pitching-starved Phillies".  It did originally say Cubs in there.  And notice the whole comment section has been cut out.  There are comment sections under all foxsports.com articles, and I remember one being there too.

So not only did he amend his article 2 days ago, he couldn't fix his stupid mistake on live television, after an embarrassing mistake in a column.

Ah, wonderful.
I love sportswriters who refuse to admit when they're wrong.

And by love, I mean hate.

The lack of a comment section
IS extremely abnormal.

The comments to that article
Besides being brutal about the Cubs gaffe also got anti-Semitic, and I'm glad Fox pulled them. My guess given the statement last night was that an editor for the site did the fix, not Ken himself, and Rosenthal still is walking around with the notion that the Rockies lost to the Cubs.

by Rox Girl on Oct 25, 2007 8:19 AM MDT up reply actions

If that's the direction they took,
then I agree, they should have been pulled. It IS painful, however, to hear Rosenthal making such a fool of himself on national TV. I wonder if anyone's informed him yet...

err.... Rockies beat the Cubs
was what that was supposed to say. Last night's bludgeoning has me forgetting that you have to win to get to the World Series apparently.
