World Series Game #2: Jimenez vs Schilling

Go Rockies!

Okay, so tonight we've got the fireballer, the Sox have the finesse guy (so weird to consider Schilling a finesse pitcher) which means that we get the thirteen runs, they get the one. Everybody got the plan straight? Good.

One other note. To all Rockies fans, please watch the denigrating names, calling opposing pitchers d-----bags or similar things will get your comments deleted. Second, to all lurking Red Sox fans, be careful to respect this site as a Rockies fan gathering place, and leave your cheering for the Sox on other sites. My fuse is much shorter tonight.

Thank you. Go Rockies!

Go Rox!
Get those ** ** **** **ING *** *** ****ERS!!!

Just kidding.  I just want an exciting game really.  A win would be better.

And agreed, BoSox fans feel free to contribute, but some of those comments the other night were just annoying.  Prodding is not necessary. The ECM (east coast media) does it enough for us.

Simulator says Rockies win tonight
Xeifrank's Simulator: Rockies 51.85%
Vegas Odds: Red Sox 65.16%
Log5: Red Sox 64.67%

Well, after last nights schalacking(sp?) I am a little bit worried about the simulators output tonight.  Of course, the simulator does not get emotionally effected when determining it's odds, like Vegas does.  But with the Log5 method and Vegas stacking up against the Rockies, I am a bit nervous on it's Game #2 performance.  Good luck!

Corporate Suits, sigh.
Okay, I just thought this was kind of funny, as I've been burning the candle at both ends here. This from my Yahoo! overlord:
My only direction going forward is that you all should feel encouraged to post in shorter bursts should the opportunity arise. Not every post has to be 200-plus words. And focus on the funny sometimes! I think a great example is the pic I just saw on Deadspin of "Manny Ramirez." We could/should have that on Yahoo!

and this came from my SBN overlord:
I think you gave the best content to Yahoo instead of PurpleRow.  This is why I was a little nervous about you doing the column.

Yep, looks like I totally screwed the coverage for up through Game one up on both sides. Pitching and hitting. I feel like the Rockies and myself have something in common this World Series.

But what the bigwigs don't know is that the Rox Girl is a free spirit, man. She does what she wants. She's like the Rickey of blogging. She can't be contained by definitions and posting limits. It's just not going to happen. End rant. Go Rockies!

New shirt ready to go!
I decided to keep wearing my "lucky" shirt from the DS and CS last night, despite the fact that mom-in-law showed up yesterday with a new Holliday t-shirt for me. (She's a nice lady. Most of the time.) Anyways, I opted to stay with the previous one. Obviously, it's mojo went the way of the black jersey. This one I AM CERTAIN will bring us a victory in Game 2 tonight. (Plus I've got the Post's Red Sox Voodoo Doll ready for the knife!)

came in the mail today so it's out with the one I wore during the previous eight games. After last night's loss, it time for something new. Plus, the old one also needs a wash.

Fremont HS
I've shared this other places and no one seemed to care. Maybe it's just not nearly as interesting as I think it is, but if anyone will care, it's people here.

I live literally right across the street from Tulo's high school in Sunnyvale, CA. I was tickled pink when I found that out.

That hadn't ever occurred to me. I have been looking at their electronic sign as I drive past to see if they mention him, but I haven't seen that. They're the Fremont Firebirds, if anyone cares. I do know that he was also a basketball star for them, made some big free throws to win a divisional championship or something (CA HS sports baffles me).

Lugo is a one-man rally killer anyway. Do you see his eyes? He looks like Reche Caldwell the receiver for the Patriots who dropped a couple of easy catches in the AFC playoff game against the Colts earlier this year...his eyes just kept getting bigger and bigger.

Agree to Disagree on B2M
Not that Ashanti was all that great, but the song sounds better sung by a female. I remember Boyz II Men from the early-90s (or whenever) and I don't remember them being that awful ...

But yes. An organ would be better.

Pedals
Yeah, the pedals take some practice. I actually took a semester beginning organ class in college (can't remember why--I think my mom urged me to), so I learned them. Now I play for church and can play most of our hymns, but there are still some places that trip me up and I have to drop out the pedal.

No problem, I understand venting.

I think Denver sports fans (I'm including myself, here) got a little spoiled in the last 10+ years when we were 4-4 in trips to championships (2 Super Bowls, 2 Stanley Cups). Obviously this series is far from over and I'm trying to hold out hope, but this is a feeling we haven't experienced.

The response was to holly.
You don't exactly seem like you're in any mood to have losses thrown in your face, so I wouldn't have.

42-10: Super Bowl, 1988. Broncos jump out to a quick 10-0 lead in the first quarter, Redskins score a record 35 points in the second quarter and 7 in the fourth to beat Elway and the Broncs. Timmy Smith, in his first ever NFL start, rushes for a SB record 204 yards.

Sorry. HUGE Skins fan.

Sox fans will chalk it up the way they want, but the Rockies sucked and being in Boston right now is like being in hell. Everyone thinks they're entitled to this shit because they're Baaaaaaaaahhhhhstan, not New York, but you know what? The Rox could do a lot with 100-whatever million too. COC rule #4
In that vein, posts of intolerance and personal attacks are unacceptable. Highlighting differences or using inflammatory rhetoric against somebody's nationality, race, gender, sexuality or religion could be cause for getting booted off the site. For a couple of examples: Aaron Miles is a bum because he can't take a walk, not because he's a short white guy. Byung Hyun Kim gets on our ire for his inconsistency in pitching, not his common English as a second language difficulty. For other users, be considerate even in total disagreement. There are various levels of baseball knowledge on the site, and if your level of understanding is greater than mine or another user's, it doesn't mean that we're idiots. Explain what you know and move on without name calling or denigration. On the other hand, be slow in taking offense when somebody disagrees with you. If you think another user (or even one of us) has gone too far, e-mail Russ or myself and let us know and we'll do our best to sort it out.

We need to get Taveres out of the leadoff spot.  When your number 3 guy goes 4-4 and you have nothing to show for it, that means the guys at top aren't doing their job.

Spilly hasn't done crap either.  When the series start at Coors, Hurdle should highly consider a lineup like this:

  1. Matsui 2b
  2. Tulo SS
  3. Holliday LF
  4. Helton 1b
  5. Atkins 3b
  6. Hawpe RF
  7. Yorvit C

Objectively
Rox are a work in progress whereas the Red Sox are a finished product (have to be because they are east coast and as we know only east coast matters in this country).

You realize the Red Sox have several players on their bench who would be the 3rd and 4th highest players on our team.  That said their experience at the plate and patience has far exceeded ours.

Hopefully we can win enough to take it to six (since I have game 5 tix) but I do not  see us winning.  Our pitching, payroll and offense is not good enough for this stage.  Yet

I think a year or two will bring out the prime of this team.  Right now we throw rookies and guys who spent considerable time in the minors in WS games.

Make sure to treat people from Boston like crap this weekend and hopefully their visit will be sad and expensive.  They'll incur nosebleeds, headaches, altitude sickness and maybe even some food poisoning.

The Rockies aren't the better team. Quite frankly, it isn't all that close. Obviously the Rockies would have needed luck in order to win this series. They haven't had it.
That said, it's not over. It's a difficult situation for them, but if the Rockies can push it back to Boston, they have a chance.

I will take the $54 Million payroll making it to

wTF is this REAL AMERICANS crap?
We're not Real Americans on the East Coast? Wow, this blog is actually making a Yankee fan consider rooting for the Red Sox. I love the subtle racism at work here. Manny isn't a real American? he grew up in Washington Heights!

BTW, I thought Jesus was on the Rockies' side? Jesus must be a total wuss.

by Arma Virumque Cano on Oct 26, 2007 6:09 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Racism?
Who said anything about Manny? Matt Holliday comes from Stillwater freaking Oklahoma, in the middle of the heartland, gets drafted, and then goes to play for the small market team that drafts him -- it doesn't get much more American than that.

And Jesus had to die before he could do anything, so I'm guessing the Rockies have to go 0-3 here before roaring back to take the series in 2004 ALCS fashion.

I'm a Rox fan, but only whenever they're playing against the AL or any California team.

Huh?
Why is Oklahoma more American than Washington Heights, NYC? Manny was born in the Dominican, came to the United States with his parents with nothing when he was 12, lived in poverty, went to public school, excelled at baseball, became a superstar for the team that drafted him, then became a zillionare when his free agent ship came into port.

An immigrant? A New Yorker? A self-made millionaire? The best of the best.

Sounds pretty damn American to me. But, sometimes I forget that you midwestern folks are used to everyone being White Christians. I wonder, would Kevin Youkilis be accepted in the Rockies clubhouse?

Firstly, that's the problem with you New Yorkers: you confuse "New York City" with "America". How very typical a comment to make than for a New Yorker to assume the rest of the country bows down to your city and considers it the center of the world, as you do. WAKE UP! Would it shock you to learn that there's an entire nation west of Orange County, NY?

Next, I NEVER SAID Manny was less American than anyone else. YOU read something in my words that was neither implied nor explicated. All I said was that Holliday is a real American, and you flew off the handle bringing Manny into it.

Your last paragraph certainly makes a lot of highly prejudicial statements. You implicitly accuse me of being racist, using absolutely nothing as evidence, and then you paint midwesterners with a very broad brush as being "used to everyone being White Christians." Somehow you don't see anything hypocritical with your statements? Firstly, I was born a Catholic in DC, and lived for five years dirt poor outside Boston before moving to Arizona. I've never been a midwesterner in my life. Don't make assumptions.

Finally, since Rockies pitcher Jason Hirsh is himself Jewish, I suggest you ask him whether Youkilis would fit in. And ask Kaz Matsui, Ubaldo Jimenez, or LaTroy Hawkins whether non-whites fit in.

Next time, think a little before you type, please, and be sure you know what you're talking about.

BTW
Denver isn't really considered Midwestern.  That's more Indiana, Iowa, etc.  Colorado generally considers itself Western or Rocky Mountain West.  And "SouthByTheBorder" is an Arizona resident, and Arizona is definitely West. (Or Southwest, depending.  But not Midwest.)

Nitpicking, but we're proud of our home cities and states much as you're proud of your home city.

I've disagreed with you in the past
But except for the Matt Holliday to the Red Sox thought (I'm guessing Angels or Rangers) you're right about the Rockies being the inferior team from an objective standpoint.

I think given that, we really need a sweep in Denver (luckily for an inferior team we match up well, particularly in Coors) for a decent shot at winning the World Series, otherwise we've got to hope for the kind of kismet that got us here.

by Rox Girl on Oct 25, 2007 11:05 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Holliday
would fit in realllllllly well in Boston. Manny will be gone, they have capital to spend on him. Green Monster would lead to about 60 doubles a year while he is still athletic. Angels and Yankees are other options. Hadn't thought about Texas, but Hicks seems to be all over Boras' nuts, so it's a possibility.
We do match up better, but winning three straight against a better team is a difficult task.
We'll see.

I wholeheartedly agree
Josh Fogg is the perfect man to have on the hill starting the home part of our series.  Stays calm, able to locate, will give up hits but also is the best guy in our rotation at forcing the pop-ups and ground-outs.  Our bats can take from his example, and if they become more patient, things can turn around.  I think it'll be a great game 3.

I read a thesis once
that predicted the US would split into two countries in  the coming decades.  One east/one west.  After listening to the diatribe of the east coast spewers I hope that happens real soon.  I have a much greater kinship and love for DBack, Padres and dare I say Dodger and Giant fans after seeing these folks.

On a side note
I have a friend who is a GM of a National League team (not my Rocks, we played minor league ball together).  He is coming into town for the Series this weekend and we have dinner plans.

He told me the Mitchell Report may be the biggest time bomb in baseball history with over 350 names being dumped out there.  Many of them beloved stars.

This could do more PR damage than the 94 strike.  Baseball may have another huge black eye on its hands.

by PinchHitLancePainter on Oct 26, 2007 12:30 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

I have a REALLY bad feeling
about the Mitchell Report. I do not think no news is good news in this case. But, if it gets the cheaters out of the game, whoever they are, I'm all for it.
Every day is a Holliday!

by free7694 on Oct 26, 2007 12:40 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Me too
I have a bad feeling too, but not necessarily because of the names (though of course that's part of it). I want to know what kind of proof it's going to contain. I'm all for getting cheaters out, but if a lot of those names are in there by second- or third-hand information, that could damage some reputations that don't necessarily deserve to be damaged. The whole thing makes me uneasy for a number of reasons.

by holly96 on Oct 26, 2007 12:45 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

One of the problems
is that there doesn't really seem to be any guarantee that it will actually do anything. Get the cheaters out, adjust stats and records, anything. It will just be a huge black eye for baseball. I guess it's good to release the report since it may help with the enforcement of the new drug policies - but I don't see anything good coming of this.

Also, I'm a little unclear on the report, is it only supposed to include names of users who took steroids after steroids were officially banned, or will it include users who took steroids before they were officially against the rules?

Both and more
My understanding is that it will be a complete report of his investigation, whatever that entails. That's why it makes me nervous. What if someone's name is in there only because it came up during the investigation but there's little to no evidence? Anybody whose name is even mentioned in passing will be tarnished, and that's what worries me. I don't know, maybe it will spell things out more clearly so  guys who are clean don't get tarnished for no reason, but I'm skeptical.

First time posting here (WARNING: Sox fan)
I read through most of the 600+ posts from each of the last two games and I admire everyone's enthusiasm.

What I take issue is with someone calling East Coast people un-American.  I think that's asinine and prejudiced and I don't see any basis for it whatsoever.  If anything, whoever said that is being the elitist pr*ck that they think all of the East Coasters are.

Back to baseball.  I don't think it was reasonable to expect to win Game 1, between the layoff, the home field advantage at Fenway, and, oh yeah, the best pitcher in recent postseason history.  Everyone can call Beckett smug and cocky and all that but the guy is getting results at a historic level.  35 K's to 2 walks!?

Also, for all the talk about the bloated payroll, I can't defend "my" team to a full extent, but consider this:

Pedroia, Youkilis, Papelbon, Delcarmen, Lester and Ellsbury were drafted by the team.
Okajima (last night's hero) was a free agent that signed for $1.25M/year
Beckett, Lowell, Crisp and Schilling came to Boston via trades of top prospects
Varitek was picked up for Heathcliff Freaking Slocumb
Ortiz was a NON-TENDERED FREE AGENT

Yes, Schilling signed a lucrative extension, Ramirez broke the bank, Dice-K's entire ordeal was ludicrous and Drew/Lugo, I have no defense for.  But for everyone to just throw a blanket statement and say "The Red Sox win because of their payroll" is ridiculous.  It has SIGNIFICANT advantages, don't get me wrong (Clement and Renteria come to mind).  But from what I've seen on this board, you guys are hardcore Rox fans who have somewhat of a rational perspective, so I'd hope you see things my way.

I hope I didn't piss anyone off - I just want to engage in a reasonable discussion.

by Reasonable Sox Fan on Oct 26, 2007 7:49 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Points well taken
First of all, those that are painting with a very wide brush here don't represent the majority.  I'm not sure why anyone here is talking about politics in the first place.  To say that you hate people from the east coast is totally ignorant, and if you don't think that is obvious then I don't think any one here can help you.

There is an general sense of annoyance in smaller western markets created by the east-coast media bias, which isn't new and hopefully isn't being disputed.  And the lack of familiarity overall with the Rockies by the mainstream media is understandable.

However, to have Ken Rosenthal announce in front of the entire nation that the Red Sox offense is much better than that of the Cubs and Diamondbacks, who the Rockies faced in the NL playoffs, is just disturbing.  (They faced the Phillies, not the Cubs, Mr. I write about and follow baseball for a living).  And then to have the ESPN radio crew announce that the Diamondbacks could have very easily stolen away game 2 with a few key hits is over the top.

So hopefully you can understand some of the angst here.

With respect to the Red Sox, this baseball and Rockies fan has been thoroughly impressed.  Beckett is a very good pitcher, but the way he steps up in the playoffs is unreal.  Schilling was just average, the Rockies should have taken advantage of his lack of command in certain spots, but give him credit for gritting through it.  The decision to yank Schilling in the 5th for Okajima was genius, even if it was the obvious move.  It would have been very easy for Francona to outsmart himself there.

No one can dispute the quality of your home grown talent, although I think pitchers are going to start finding holes in Pedroia's swing next year.  And I have no problem with Beckett being cocky (although I haven't really seen much of this from him), he has certainly backed it up with his performance.

However, the advantage of a massive payroll is that you can 1) pay tons of $$$ for mediocre talent and still survive (Lugo, Clement), and 2) afford to make dramatic mistakes (Daisuke, .  Small market teams don't have those luxuries, just look at exhibit A: the Rockies of the last 10 years.

by Roberbola on Oct 26, 2007 9:02 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Certainly
this team is much more home-grown than the 2004 team, and Epstein and his scouts should be commended for that. Okajima is a feather in your cap as well.

However, another aspect that hasn't been addressed is that when teams like yours do grow their own talent, and said talent goes on to superstardom, your team can afford to KEEP those superstars. Teams like the Indians, Rockies, and Dbacks have to keep counting on the farm system to produce young, cheap players, after the previous crop gets bought up by the Yankees and Red Sox. When Pedroia's eligible for arbitration, you can afford to keep him.

By the way, on the Schilling trade? Thanks a lot for Casey Fossum, Brandon Lyon, Jorge de la Rosa and Michael Goss. Getting a setup man and 3 nobodies sure paid off well. (Well, actually, Lyon DID pan out better than expected this year)

I'm a Rox fan, but only whenever they're playing against the AL or any California team.
