World Series Game #3: Fogg vs Matsuzaka

For either one of these pitchers to have success at Coors Field, they need to be able to hit their spots and keep the opposition guessing at what the next pitch will be. If Josh Fogg relies too much on his changeup or Matsuzaka too much on his fastball, they could be in for a rough game. For the Rockies, they need their bats to wake up. I don't want to take anything away from the two pitchers we've faced thus far, both have proven themselves among the best at the trade, but Rockies hitters are better than this and they need to show it if we want to avoid the sweep.

The crowd will be rocking, well at least one person I know of will be, and the Rockies happen to be undefeated against the Sox this year when she's in attendance. I think that's the only stat you need.

Go Rockies!!!

While the game is going on....
...I'll be announcing a Roller Derby match.  Gonna have to follow the action via my cell phone between jams.

When I said yes to this gig a month and a half  ago, the possibility of it coinciding with a World Series game didn't exactly come to mind.

At any rate, if you can't watch the Series, being surrounded by tough chicks in short skirts and fishnet stockings ain't that bad an alternative.

Hopefully, the Rox have the same kickass attitude tonight that those women do.

"Don't give up the ship!" - Capt. James Lawrence

by Russ Oates on Oct 27, 2007 7:42 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

So...
Taveras gets to be the scapegoat for the entire offense that looks awful, his replacement grounds out weakly, and then magellan's a ball in center that should have been a running catch had he not broke back on the ball, then in, than back again...

This is why I didn't want changes, it's just selective accountability.  If they really wanted to try to jumpstart the O, Hawpe would be lifted for Smith.

Finally, that boring inning is over.  Unfortunately, this is when we'll start making first-pitch outs, taking home run swings at high pitches out of the zone, etc.  I hope I'm wrong.

by dogs on Oct 27, 2007 7:44 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

The layoff has
destroyed the offense timing.  Everyone is late on their swing.  Hawpe the worst and I am not suprised as he needs to re-invent himself next year and compact that long sweeping stroke.

by PinchHitLancePainter on Oct 27, 2007 7:45 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Some cool news
MLBTR thinks we are hot after Ian Snell.  So long as he doesn't still hold homicidal feelings for our hitters, he could give us a quality young "ace."

by David OhNo on Oct 27, 2007 7:46 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

They need some help
I think Morales needs to spend some time in CS next year.  Fogg is going to get some bigger $$ elsewhere so he is gone.  They need some insurance against another full rotation injury bug.

by PinchHitLancePainter on Oct 27, 2007 7:48 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I do think they need more
but not just anyone, I've been saying it and still believe it, the Rockies' FO will target one "big ticket" pitcher this off-season through trade.

Be it Willis, Bedard (right...), Garland, or now Snell, I think the Rockies want a ready-made starter that can be their number one-two pitcher, or solid enough to be a good NL number three (that's Garland).

by David OhNo on Oct 27, 2007 7:51 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's a bogus rumor I'm guessing

by kemosabe on Oct 27, 2007 7:52 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't think it is the Sox
pitching as much as the Rocks lack of hitting.  They never were this inept all year.  The layoff killed their timing and keen eyes.

by PinchHitLancePainter on Oct 27, 2007 7:54 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes, but they weren't exactly tearing it up before

Right, just like when Hawpe sat against lefties earlier in the season.  That certainly killed his confidence....

Spilborghs or Baker would give the Rockies a better chance at winning.
Spilborghs and his .350 average vs. LH > Hawpe and his .214 average.

I'd also add...
...I think Boston has been "peaking" so to speak for the playoffs for sometime. They jumped to a 14.5 game lead in June and I actually think they started prepping for the playoffs back in early August. They have sat a lot of people in key series and really didn't didn't seem to turn it on again until late September. According the the MLB predictor, this was a team that should have won 102 games, not 96, based on total offensive output, ERA, etc.

Bottom line - Colorado is playing a good Boston team that is absolutely peaking.

Boston never waves a white flag.

Oh, yeah. Pythag.
That's right, the formula that says the Dbacks should have won 79 games rather than 90, based on their run differential.

I haven't paid any attention to that BS since April. Arizona severely outperformed their pythag in 2005 and did the same thing this year in 2007.

clearly...
...it doesn't measure the heart of a team.
Boston never waves a white flag.

by galacticpilot on Oct 27, 2007 8:34 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's more than that, though.
It counts all runs equally, as if losing 1 game by 10 runs were equal to losing 4 or 5 games by only a few each time, and it doesn't give a lot of respect to teams that win a lot of close games.

It assumes close wins, especially 1 run wins, are essentially random, and that there's no such thing as a team that's good at winning close games.

Win differential is more important than run differential. Run diff might be useful early in the season to show which teams are likely underperforming or overperforming, but there's a point at which it's clearly not very useful anymore to predict, and using win % is more useful.

If you follow the pythag theory, it argues that a team that outperforms its run differential will eventually see its W/L come back to the expectation. The Dbacks this year did the opposite; they were outscored on the year, but eventually their run differential caught up a little bit closer to their win %, and in fact they outscored the opposition in the month of September.

I'm a Rox fan, but only whenever they're playing against the AL or any California team.

that was a great 2 and 1/3 after his shaky Boston debut.  If he'll just let his natural stuff work and not try to be too overpowering, everything else will fall in line for him.  He's got a very nice GB rate in both the minors and majors, and the stuff oozes K potential.  Now refine that change-up between now and the next time he sees major league service time and he'll be quite the starter.

Good show by Frankie
that should help  him when he starts the season at AAA next year.  He needs some refinement.  They'll be no OJT on the Rocks next season.

by PinchHitLancePainter on Oct 27, 2007 8:39 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Disagree
there will still be plenty of OJT next year and years to come.  It's the nature of the organizational model and frankly, it isn't a detriment.

If Morales and Jimenez hadn't come up, the Rockies wouldn't even be here.

With Iannetta working back in to the mix, and Smith and Stewart potentially taking larger roles next year, there will be plenty of learning going on, but if this year has taught anyone anything (and Diamondbacks fans feel free to add in here) it's that rookies don't have to mean rebuilding.

by David OhNo on Oct 27, 2007 8:43 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

My point is the expectation level will change
next year they will expect to win at the outset and contend in a tough division.  Not sure how much shuffling will be allowed.  Barring trades I expect Ian Stewart will be in CS next year, Frankie, Joe Ko, and maybe even Seth.

by PinchHitLancePainter on Oct 27, 2007 8:49 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

'Rookies don't have to mean rebuilding'
Absolutely with you there, brother. The best learning a rookie can do happens in the majors.

Plenty of people wanted to option Reynolds and Upton back down to AAA (they were both called up directly from AA) to work on their hitting, and they had some ugly months, but they both bounced back eventually. (Upton in the postseason, Reynolds had an OPS over .900 in August and September)

You CAN win with rookies. It just makes it a whole lot harder. ;-)

I'm a Rox fan, but only whenever they're playing against the AL or any California team.

by DbacksSkins on Oct 27, 2007 8:51 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

My belief is talent trumps all
and however many warts a rookie may have (like Jimenez and Morales' control), if the talent is there and just enough polish, they'll be assets.

by David OhNo on Oct 27, 2007 8:54 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Talent DOES trump all.
But savvy trumps even more. The Dbacks were expected to contend next year, not this year, and on top of that, in a lot of ways our young guys underperformed. Yet we still pulled off a pretty good season.

If we can do it, anyone can. Having a young team isn't necessarily contradictory to having a winning team.

I'm a Rox fan, but only whenever they're playing against the AL or any California team.

by DbacksSkins on Oct 27, 2007 9:00 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Just look at the Dodgers
which lineup where you more afraid of?  The one with Loney, Kemp, and Ethier, or the one with Garciaparra, Gonzalez, and Pierre?  (And it sounds like the Dodgers still don't get it).

by David OhNo on Oct 27, 2007 9:03 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly, but that's a perfect example
where the savvy didn't match the talent. Those young Dodgers are REALLY good... but the egos are bigger than the players' abilities. They don't all fit inside the clubhouse.

A lot of that has to do with the managing, as well. Grady Little is a players' manager who lost control of his players.

When he played here in Tulsa
I didn't see him as being anymore than an average left fielder, but according to Gustafson in an XM interview earlier this year, Smith has put more work into his defense, and he should be solid in either corner.

by David OhNo on Oct 27, 2007 8:45 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Since we're on the topic of Smith
Where do you see him fitting in next season?

Full-time player with Colorado Springs? (until needed in the majors)
Or bench player in the majors?

Sullivan is a non-tender candidate.... maybe Smith will take over the LH PH / 4th OFer role.

by malakian on Oct 27, 2007 8:49 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

He'll share 4th OF role
with Spilborghs, potentially playing some center against pitchers that really struggle with lefties.

That's at least what I think should happen.  There's no reason to bring Sullivan back, and other than possibly dangling Hawpe this off-season, I don't see any other roster moves in the OF other than trying to recoup value on Baker's promising yet underperforming bat.

Clay Davenport: Had to look that up. Of course, Fogg was no dragonslayer, just one surviving meber of an expedition which managed to slay a few. it has been a great ride, but at the end of the day, it's still Matt Herges, though this model has an unsustainably low hit rate that is ripe for rebound next year.

You know what I'm looking forward to?
That time, about 3 or 4 weeks from now, when the pain of this freakin' Series is faded when we can look happily back on how amazing this season was.

I'm sure that will happen.  And it will be welcome, 'cause right now, I'm just sick about this.

We finally get the nation's attention and we reinforce every negative stereotype about this team.  Damn it to hell.

That's all I ask, wipe Kruk's stupid grin off his face.

I'm glad enough to BE here. Winning would be euphoria, all I want right now is one win.

One good thing....
This series clearly demonstrates the gap between the Rockies and the best teams of the American League.  After this, it will be very tough for the Monforts to simply sit back and not make serious efforts to improve this club's weak spots.  The can't pretend that the only thing keeping the Rox from a  WS Banner is lack of experience.

Fans will know that the Rox will be sitting on some big post season revenue, from tickets, TV and merchanidsing, and have picked up many season ticket holders for 2008.   They will, I would hope, demand that the money gets spent to improve the ballclub and make sure we're better prepared to take on the AL when we get back to the big show.

Let's face reality
even if the Rockies turned into the cash cow they were 10 years ago and sold out every game.  We will never have a $150M payroll.  Last year STL and Det each had about $100M and made it to the series.  CWS and Houston each had close to $100M in 2005 and same with Boston and STL in 04.  The Marlins had huge $$ and spikes when they went.

Bottom line.  This is a one shot deal so enjoy it while it lasts.  Economics says it is unlikely we'll be back anytime soon.

I posted the sign that i brought to tonight's game
plus the sign ideas that didn't make it and some camphone pix from the game are posted at http://www.flickr.com/photos/dodja

Believe me, I was loud enough to account for at least a dozen people who couldn't get there. But my section was like a damned morgue, I don't know what the F--- is wrong with people but you're watching your team at the World Series. No one's gonna think you're weird for screaming your part of the GO - ROCKIES chant. For the love of god stand the hell up, chant, twirl your towels, whatever, just don't sit there. </rant>

Anyway it's not over yet!

(On a side note I found most of the Sox fans at the game to be pretty cool.)

by kev_in on Oct 28, 2007 2:34 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Sorry Folks
But do you really think Josh Fogg's parents and grandparents were disappointed Daisuke won? Was Josh glad it was the Sox?

The "I surrender towel wavers" think what's being played was a baseball game. It's not, it's our life, the grandest of life. There are 7yr old kids who aren't waiting for Groundhog day to signal the end of winter. It's the day in late January when the equipment vans leaves for spring training. The Red Sox are a lot more than a team of players. The Red is the blood that flows through our veins. We are a town that still speaks in awe of a man who hasn't played a baseball game in over 47 years. Once at the park we look for His "Red Seat" and after we find it wonder how Teddy Ballgame hit a ball that far. We know it's not over until we have 4 wins and I hope that's today. But we do need to move on to the Superbowl, the BCS and who knows maybe "hang another banner from the rafters" at the Garden. Ok the Bruins have no chance but they did give the Lanche Ray Bourque.

BTW Pesky belongs in the dugout, you listening MLB?

Boston fans
Something about Sox fans that might be hard to understand for Rox fans might be the payroll issue. Everybody knows that Matt Clement made about $7 million this year without throwing a single pitch. Everyone knows that Edgar Renteria's salary is still paid in large part by the Sox. That Willy Moe Pena still gets a Sox paycheck.

Basically, that almost $20 million of the Sox $150+ million payroll this year was spent on players that didn't actually play for the Sox.

The Sox are even willing to pick up players that are dropped by other teams because they are too old and overpaid for their value to their former team, and give them a seat on the bench "just in case" they are needed. Guys like Royce Clayton. I've never actually seen him enter a game for the Sox. For all I know, he may not even be on the roster. But I do know the Sox are paying him quite a bit of money to be a cheerleader, just in case.

Red Sox Nation wants the Sox to sign Curt Schilling for $13 million for next season in hopes he might be able to start 20 games and be there for the playoffs as a number 4 starter. We cite Kason Gabbard and Bronson Arroyo as examples of pitchers we let go we would have needed later on as examples of why we need Curt. Even though we know we have Beckett, Matsuzaka, Bucholz (he of the no hitter in 2007), Wakefield, and Lester for our rotation next year. We still want Curt at $13 million just in case.

The only free agent Red Sox Nation wants to see sign with another team is Matt Clement, just because he hasn't been able to stay healthy for the Sox. We most definitely want to see Mike Lowell back next year, at whatever the price.

Now if all that means you need to raise our ticket prices up another $5 per ticket so be it. We'll not only pay it, we'll sell out all 81 games at Fenway next year to thank you for it. When we talk about games sold out in a row in Red Sox Nation, we don't talk about the number of games in a row, we talk about the number of years worth of games in a row.

You may think I, or other Sox fans are recent fans. I have four children. My oldest is in high school. I still recall my parents taking me to Fenway as a child. I reflect fondly on my father's stories about watching Ted Williams hit at Fenway. I've seen Yaz take BP at the ballpark, nevermind watching him play. I live Red Sox, I love Red Sox, and it's been that way as long as I can remember. For me, it doesn't matter what they do, as long as they do their best to put a winning team on the field. This year, I'd say it is safe to say they have done their best.

You may hate them because of their payroll, because of some perceived arrogance, or whatever reason you hate them. But if the roles were reversed. If the Rox had a $150 million + payroll and contended EVERY year. Would you hate yourself?

Neither this post nor the one above
is necessary for this site.  I did not delete them because they aren't inflamatory, but might I remind the two of you that this is a Rockies fan site, and more than anyone, Rockies fans are entitled to their opinions here.

While I don't agree with many here that have a disdain for Sox fans, and have had several solid conversations with a few this week here, we don't need your grandstanding or your cheerleading on this site.

I can't speak for rox girl or Russ, but I think this is the last one I will let slide.

sooooooo..........
I just want to make sure I am clear on this. Please correct me if I am wrong:
  1. Inordinate and unprovoked name calling is ok if it is by a Rockie's fan even if it violates the COC.
  2. Trying to provide an explanation to one of the major criticisms Rox fans have for the Sox is not ok.
Am I getting it correctly?

Check Rule #1.
Technically, you're violating the COC because you're beating your chest about the Red Sox. This is a Rockies website.
Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies - 2008 NL West Champion and 2008 NL Wildcard, in some order.

I doubt any of these Red Sox fans...
...are helping their respective causes or endearing themselves to any Rox fans...

Bookworm, aren't there about a million Boston sites you could be a cheerleader at instead?

Ickimore, when your team has been around for 107 years, and you play in a town like Boston, you can charge ticket prices up the @$$ and people will pay. Not so when you're an expansion franchise.

Let's see the Sox have a season like the Rockies had last year, and go 10 games under .500. Then, let's see your team play .471 baseball over 15 years, winning the wildcard ONCE. Half your fans would be gone.

Besides, no matter how you try to dress it up, you've still just become the New Yankees.

I'm a Rox fan, but only whenever they're playing against the AL or any California team.

by DbacksSkins on Oct 28, 2007 10:59 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Funny...
...Three years ago it was "wait another 86 years till your next title."

...now it's "your payroll is too high. You've become the next Yankees."

I've come to the conclusion most of these opinions are drivel, and are simply formed out of the pain of losing.  And as such, not worth debating.

Boston never waves a white flag.
