It could happen...
The power of the beard.
The magic of number 64.
Coolbaugh's sons throwing out the first pitch.
and every other amazing thing that has happened to create the most memorable October in Colorado history.
LET'S-GO-ROCK--IES--!!

At any rate
If there's such a thing pitching, Cook is pretty much a known commodity. Not by ERA standards or anything, but you do know he'll pound the sinker, walk and K few, and leave the brunt of the work to the defense.
Here's to those grounders finding Rockies' gloves tonight and not open spaces!

Urgh. I just need to vent somewhere about Hurdle constantly playing the infield in on man on third situations. It backfired last night in the third inning, it backfired just now. Stop it Clint. You're overmanaging us out of the series.

Finally, a forecasted defensive miscue
by David OhNo on Oct 28, 2007 7:19 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
exactly
Notice his defensive miscue wasn't in Fenway. Also notice that if he was as terrible as advertised, his defensive miscue would have come up prior to game 4. Also note I said that Ortiz, although he is much maligned in the field, is really not that bad except for his lack of range.
As you may or may not have noticed, there are many things that are considered common knowledge about the skill sets of major league players that are not necessarily 100% accurate. It is the case with Rox players as with Sox players. Unfortunately, these common knowledge stereotypes get perpetuated by the poor media coverage. That is why scouting reports from the fans of the respective teams can be useful, and learning about your players was the whole reason I came here in the first place.

As an outfielder,
Manny can play perfectly at Fenway; he's got the monster to help him out. But the Red Sox still play 1/2 of their games in other stadiums. There's a good reason Francona switched Manny with Jacoby Ellsbury last night, because there's no way Manny catches that ball from Jamey Carroll.

by DbacksSkins on Oct 28, 2007 7:50 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Doubt it
As for the other part I wasn't considering until now, how might the Mitchell report shape the off-season?
Let's say hypothetically that Torii Hunter gets pinned in the report. Will that cause potential PR nightmares for interested teams? Maybe Hunter was too big of a name, but a lesser free agent could be crushed by the Mitchell Report.
by David OhNo on Oct 28, 2007 7:53 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Rumors..
But then, during the season all that was ever mentioned about the report was how no one was talking to George Mitchell. So who knows what's true and what was prescribed by a respected doctor of dentistry.

Lugo
He far surprised his career best year in RBIs this year. He hit more RBIs than JD Drew on the season, and they both had similar number of at bats. I haven't really looked up his batting average with runners in scoring position, but I'm guessing that Lugo was appreciably better with men on base.

I know this will upset many fans here after his series of implosions this year, but if we can find him a right handed partner for the eighth (before Weathers gets here), we'll be more euipped to hide his faults and yank him when things hint at heading south. He's been a pretty darn good set up man down the stretch, and he can still be good, but 6-7 million good? That's a tough arb figure for our budget.

I think Hurdle the man
I think Hurdle the "player's manger" is pretty good.
Hurdle that strategen is in the bottom tier of MLB managers.
Just shows how little manager strategy matters, I guess (Manuel and Wedge also had good runs, go figure). However, a good GM is infinitely more important, and while Theo is my all time fave, I'm a big fan of our current one (Macri trade notwithstanding).

Now, that being said, Manny will not win any gold gloves despite his Fenway fielding prowess, he will not steal any bases unless it is by accident, and he won't ever lay down a perfect bunt unless it is luck.
What he will do most years is hit 30-35 home runs and 100-120 RBIs with a batting average around .300 from the right side of the plate. That's pretty darn hard to come by, and will get him in the HOF if he keeps performing.

Bye, bye Sox
Mike Lowell, Curt Schilling, CoCo Crisp, Timlin?
by Charlie77 on Oct 28, 2007 8:37 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
bye bye Sox
As for Timlin, he's 41 years old and missed much of the season due to injury and looked horrible when he first came back. I'm not so sure he has much left in the tank, so I wouldn't be sorry to see him go either.
Schilling is worth bringing back, but if he leaves the Sox rotation will still be in good shape barring injury (in case you haven't noticed, the Sox have decent pitching). At 40 Schilling has lost his 95 mph fastball and needs to rely on location. He also missed much of the season due to a shoulder injury. I don't know as he will give that much to the team next year, but his veteran leadership and postseason experience are good to have to go along with enough skill to still get the job done in the big games.
Lowell needs to be re-signed. Period. I don't want ARod, and I don't see any other free agent 3B out there any better than Lowell. Plus, Lowell is one of the leaders in the clubhouse and is beloved by the hispanic members of the team.

Rox
However, without some off season moves I don't believe they can be a favorite to win the World Series next year based solely on their performance this series.
Their poor performance this series was due to quite a few factors in my opinion.
First, the layoff hurt them in game one, but I don't see how they could not have gotten the layoff issues straight in time for game two.
Second, they did come back down to Earth a bit. Every hitter goes through peaks and valleys throughout a season and a career. The Rockie's hitters were peaking at the same time for a few weeks, then for the playoffs (not just the WS) they entered a valley. The problem is, the valley came to too many of them at once.
Third, there's a few guys on that team that aren't that good a hitter, despite their season numbers. You don't strike out eight times in four games (or whatever) against all variety of pitchers in just a valley. Professional hitters make contact more often than not. I mean, we're not talking about facing Josh Beckett every game here.
Fourth, pitchers need to have good location to get by. You've got too many pitchers that made too many mistakes. Game one and game three were pitching disasters for the Rockie's. There's a couple guys on that staff that may need a lesser role next year. On most NL teams there's a couple guys in the lineup that rarely get hits (not just the pitcher). On a couple of teams there aren't many guys that can hit at all (i.e. Nationals). Pitchers with poor location can do ok against those teams. The top hitting teams in the AL don't work that way (Red Sox, Indians, Tigers, and Yankees would qualify right now). Poor location pitchers get hammered by them on a routine basis.

We had to be doing something positive with the other 90% of games.
Also, a good 20% chunk of those was the underperforming month 1/2 opening the Rockies limped out on, so if you remove the high point and low point, you get a pretty darn good year.

I realize there aren't any other MLB teams within the Rocky Mountain range. However, in basketball for example there is the Utah Jazz as well as the Denver Nuggets. Wouldn't the Utah Jazz's fans feel somehow slighted by the Denver fans taking ownership of the word "mountains"?
In addition, there are several other mountain ranges within the continental USA, albeit none as large as the Rocky's. Isn't it possible that the song is referring to the western California mountain range for example?

The Sox did the same thing with Royce Clayton. They historically do this on a regular basis. Bring in veterans that are released for one reason or another just for their veteran experience on the bench. The Sox hate to use kids on the bench because they feel the young players are better served by playing every day in AAA. In most cases, the veterans are thrilled to be part of a winning team right at that point in time that they thought their baseball career might be done. Gabe Kapler was a good example of this practice quite a few years ago.

by Jelly on Oct 28, 2007 9:59 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Okajima
The whole reason for that stupid trade was because the Sox almost signed Gagne in the offseason, but they were concerned with his injury situation, so they wouldn't guarantee him a position as the closer (back when Papelbon wanted to move to the starting rotation). Texas guaranteed him a position as their closer so Gagne chose Texas. So when Gagne proved himself healthy and Texas started shopping Gagne around, Boston was willing to give up too much to get him.
In retrospect, I'd much rather have Kason Gabbard back. I don't care if the kid had no long term rotation spot, he's a darn good pitcher.

It's not a significant piece
We just can't risk having him fill any lengthy role in the lineup again. Or have a bench where he could potentially be needed for a big AB, regardless of his shallow sac fly in the play-in game.

promise
Well, I'd like to say that I don't intend to gloat, and haven't at all in this thread. But I will mention a few things as the longest standing Sox fan on this blog.
A few things I was told when I arrived that weren't even close to true:
- The Rox are better at every position except 3B, C, and DH.
- Boston isn't equipped to play at Coors because of Manny in LF, Ortiz at 1B, Dice-K sucking rarified air.
- We will "kick in Beckett's teeth and shut Fenway the eff up."
- "Rox drop the first one, ESPN chowderheads salivate, they rip off the next four and clinch at home in Game 5."
- "You're an idiot" in response to my reasons why the Sox would beat the Rox. In most places, people that make INCORRECT predictions are considered idiots, not people that make correct ones.
- "The Boston hitters will have to adjust to not being up 2-0 or 3-1 every at bat."
- "I looked at what I saw on the field and think that Taveras is better than the Cereal/Ellsbury platoon."
- "They spray it all over the field. Have you ever seen the Rockies play??? Didn't think so."
- "I really like pointing out facts to guys like this and watching them get mad and frustrated. It's just hilarious to me." Free, your facts were impeccable.
- "To my fellow Rockies fans Sorry about the flame war up there. I tend to get my jollies by bringing facts to the table and shutting up arrogant east coast fans." - Free7694
- "you're willing to admit the bottom 3 of your division is inferior, but fail to see the possiblity of a direct correlation between playing 54 games (35 of which were wins) against those teams and having the best record in baseball?"
- June proves why we will beat the Sox.
- "Rockies in 5. The Sox will not win a game at Coors, so all we have to do is take 1 of 4 at Fenway"
"So here's my proposal for you: come back and talk all the trash you want if and when Boston wins game one."
Unfortunately, the username you responded to was banned once I took you up on that offer, right after game 1.

Not gloating?
For kemosabe, galacticpilot and the many other classy Boston fans out there, I want to add my congrats on a great season and a dominant World Series. Too bad the "real" (by that I mean post-All Star break) Rocks didn't show up, but I'm not even sure that would have been enough. Despite getting to the Show this year, I think this group of players is still a year or two away from peaking. When that happens, watch out world! As another poster has said, "Objects in your mirror are larger than they appear!"
As for you, Ickimore, there are other boards and forums where you can trade barbs to your heart's content. I suggest you find one, go there and stay there.

Congratulations to the Boston Red Sox
And more congratulations to the Rockies. This is a team that has been building for years, and will be a contender for the forseeable future. We have an interesting offseason ahead of us, but we will make the most of it, I guarantee it.
I'm sad that we lost the World Series. But we won the NL Pennant this year, and we have solidified our place in the world of baseball. Tonight I'm going to hang my Rockies pennant, and tomorrow will produly wear my hat and NL Champs shirt. As Rockies fans, we have NOTHING to be ashamed of. It's the end of this year, and to be sorrowful is of course an appropriate reaction. But when all is said and done, we should hold our heads high. And start counting the days to Spring Training 08.
Oh, and thanks to the D-Backs fans for sticking with us through this, you're always welcome back. If we can survive a pennant race with you and still be cool, you're always welcome back.
Here's to a fantastic 2007 season, and looking forward to an exciting 2008.

I am a Cubs fan having lived five years just outside of Chicago, and it is amazing every year what they do. Thanks
Not only that, but next season starts on or near my birthday.
Thank you Rockies, you are a fabulous team, and I wish I could go to each player individually and shake his hand and thank him for the joy and excitement that he has brought an entire town.
No one will ever take this year away from us. And there will be many more years ahead for us and for our children.
Go Rockies

Well said
My Mom is the next biggest Rockies fan in my family after myself, and we've already planned for her to come visit me in San Francisco next season some weekend when the Rockies are in town. We'll catch a game or two at AT&T Park, wear our NLCS t-shirts, cheer on our boys and hope the Giants fans don't beat us up. Then we'll spend a day down at Fisherman's Wharf, maybe get a sundae at Ghirardelli Square. Should be fun. I can't wait.

It's not like this after the NBA Finals
The late commissioner's quote seems apropos at this point: It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. -A. Rockies played hard
You should be proud of them.
That 9th inning shot to left had all Boston worried.

Congrats Rocks!
Considering all that this team (fans included) have been through, I am just so happy right now. We had the terrible start; the implosion tour through Toronto, Chicago, and Houston; the constant injuries to our pitching staff; the Coolbaugh story (the bad side), and yet, through all of that, has come the sweep of the Yankees; the 21 of 22; the Gwynn Jr. triple; the chin; the Coolbaugh story (the good side); Ubaldo and Franky and Manny; a MVP; a ROY; and finally, and most importantly... a NL Pennant.
This has been a great year, let's not let the dissapointment of losing the WS to the best team in baseball overshadow that!
Go Rockies!
