Red Sox win game one; also Phillies four game NLDS win to start tomorrow

Strangely, the invincible Cole Hamels, for one inning at least, appeared just as vincible to this Rockies lineup as Jake Peavy, Brandon Webb, Josh Beckett, Brad Penny and others. What was more weird, Jeff Francis, who started in twenty-two wins this season by the Rockies out of thirty-four total starts, actually was involved in another W today.

Yeah, it's shocking to me, too. Good pitching on the Rockies, go figure. At least we know it won't show up in any of the next three games. I mean what has Franklin Morales done? Broken the club's record scoreless inning streak as a 21 year old? Pshh. That was what, seven innings for this franchise? Oh. That many? Really? So I was ten off or so, so what? An ERA+ of 138? But that's better than Cole Hamels... Jeez. I didn't know that. Okay, but what about Ubaldo Jimenez? Who is this Ubaldo Jimenez? His name is so funny to me, my Ivy League friends will laugh all day at that. Is he any good, or is he just some exotic novelty? A 111 ERA+? Wow. Are you sure? That's so much better than anything the Fightins can put up in game three, hey Joe, are you sure we've got this predition thing right? I mean, what if Colorado actually has good pitching? That would totally blow my world.

I love it
You got by possibly the biggest obstacle in the series.

Now finish them.

Jeff and Jack
They did a nice job today.  The only thing I missed seeing was how far Holliday's foul ball went.  When he hit it, I thought Corrigan was going to fall out of the booth.  They've got my ears for tomorrow!

I was a little angry
with Cal Ripkins comments during the game.   He says Francis doesn't get the 4 strikeouts to start the game if it weren't for the shadows.  That might be so, but don't take anything away from a guy who is pitching lights out,  funny thing is though, is right after Cal said that, Francis went back and struck out the first batter he faced.

TBS was in my opinion very bias.  Its easy to tell they are pulling for the Phils, but on a national broadcast, I would expect a little better professionalism

They were pretty much
openly pulling for the Pads as well. I wonder why they don't want to drink the Cinderella kool-aid with the rest of us.

Wow...
I wonder if the comments are edited, because they are all so positive, and I think I know why. One thing I absolutely love about this team that we all know but has finally been shown on a national stage: they are all honest, fun, good guys, and they don't carry big egos or talk like superstar baseball players. They mean what they say, and, it seems, genuinely care about and like being around each other. It's a lot easier to be a fan of a team you can actually identify with, and as a player it's got to be much easier to do something like, say, win 14 out of 15 to reach the playoffs when you know you won't have to deal with stupid ego stuff that brought the Dodgers down towards the end of the year.

I'm enjoying hearing these guys talk to the media because, for the first time in forever, it seems like they're making baseball personal again. They don't sound scripted, they don't sound fake, and I really get the impression that these guys care more about playing the game - for each other and for the fans (which I think they genuinely do care about) - than they do about advancing their image. They could easily play up the 'no respect/east coast bias' angle that we're all harping about, but I think, truly, they're just too passionate about baseball to notice or care.

Okay, so that got a little out of hand and maybe should have been a diary. Anyhow, the Helton blog, for the above reasons, will be a really fun read.

XM radio is carying the home team and ESPN
and I must say, the Gary Thorn-Steve Phillips broadcast team was very good.  Phillips came across as very knowledgeable on both teams and pitchers, and could not say enough good things about Francis' ability to mix pitches and locations with precision.

Neither was afraid to be critical to either team and together they made a good broadcast team I look forward to hearing tomorrow.

I was talking to a coworker today
He, of Seattle, told me how Denver feels like his hometown did in 1995. After an improbable late season surge, the Mariners jumped into the playoffs and knocked off the Yankees in a tight wild-card performance. Ever since it seems, Seattle has been a baseball town.

I can vouche in part as I lived there from 2000 to 2002.

I was seven years old and living in suburban Milwaukee when the Brewers went to their only World Series (so far). When the Brewers clinched the AL East that year I remember the streets filled with honking horns. Monday night I heard that walking out of Coors Field.

What I noticed this summer and fall in Denver is that the kids, the 7, 8 and 9 year-olds are wearing Holliday and Tulowitzki t-shirts rather than Broncos t-shirts. This is so important for a franchise, because if the Rockies go deep into the playoffs, an entire generation of fans will grow up rooting for the Rockies unconditionally.

As stated before, I am a Brewers fan, but I have a wicked case of Rockies Fever - as do a lot of my fellow transplant baseball fans. It is so fun to see this city and region wake up to Holliday and Helton and Tulo and Kaz and on and on...

I've been off on AZ Snakepit all night
rooting for our NL West brethren against the Cubs. Good times, they're a funny and knowledgeable lot over there. Won't stop me from hating their team in a nanosecond if we end up in an NLCS matchup.

Visiting
We loved having you with us.  It was a great game, and I love having women fans posting.  We fans of the forgotten teams must stick together.

Of course we will hate you too, should the NLCS come down to the two teams who shoud be there, but in the meantime:

Go DBacks!!
Go Rockies!!

Thanks!
I had a lot of fun being there, and will certainly return to cheer the Bax to a second consecutive victory over the Flubs.

I want this team to continue to be underdogs
It's just more fun this way.

Let them ignore Jimenez and Morales. It will make it that much better.

Protect the Shield Read it, don't, whatever.

Well then....
It would appear that the reports of our teams' demise have been greatly exaggerated.

So... I guess the Philadelphia-Chicago sweeps begin tomorrow?

Better you guys than the Cubs
Cubs fans are already obnoxious enough.  Imagine how they'll be if they actually win something.
The Coors Effect... thinking about changing the name to The Humidor Effect.

Agreed.
If you ever get a chance, ask Jim over at the SnakePit about his experience this year with Cubs fans. Whew....

Not to mention the fact that if the Cubs win the WS, the planet Earth will implode, cats will chase dogs, roosters will crow at midnight, and Jebus will return to Earth to wage a boxing match with Satan to judge the sinners.

TRUE baseball fans go to heaven. Giants, Yankees, Cubs, and Mets fans go to hell.

I'm really enjoying the NL West's success...
I'm living in CT now and get the NYC radio stations.  Early in the season when the Rockies were visiting the Mets, one of the local radio (WFAN) guys went off on the NL West.  He was saying that this was the part of the schedule where the Mets were playing horrible teams and that the NLWest was the NL Worst.

Where are the Mets now????

by DenverBears on Oct 4, 2007 10:42 AM MDT up reply actions

Oh, come now.
Didn't the Mets end up winning the NL Least?
