Report from Game 1

[editor's note, by Rox Girl] bumped from the diaries.

A few things overheard while sitting in Section 109 in row 31 during yesterday's Rockies/Phillies game (RF line, 1 section from the Foul Pole about 30 rows from the field):

-My favorite part.  In Holliday's 1st AB of the game, the crowd chanted "Touch the Plate"....hilarous

-Philly sports talk radio on the drive back to DC was already calling for Utley to be benched in favor of Iguchi

-Holliday hit at least 1 BP HR out of the ballpark.

-Holliday's 2nd inning foul ball was hit Really Really Really far.  Just crushed....it CLEARED the foul pole.

-Philly's fans with Helton coming up:  "Crap...just walk him."  "This guy always hits .400"

-Rockies early lead completely changed the game.  Totally took the crowd out of it.

-I hate those damn towels....but I still have one.  Need to figure out what to do with it.

-Denny Bautista's "smile" in the Offical Program is ridiculous.

-The Rocky theme song is played about every 5 min.  Honestly....could it be any more overdone?  The Phillie Phanatic dressed up in boxing gloves and a warmup robe to "box" some pasty white guy in a Rockies hat right in front of the Rockies Dugout inbetween innings (I think the 5th).  Naturally he was knocked out.

-Phillies fan in the 4th inning:  "We have 1 HIT in 4 innings!!...this NEVER HAPPENS....COME ON!"

-I only hear 1 single "Rockies Suck" the entire game and it was on the way to the parking lot.  I only wore a Rockies Hat though (not my Helton jersey).....it is Philly.  I didn't have a death wish.

-What the hell was Hurdle pulling Francis in the 7th right after warmups???  I've never seen that.  I thought a wild Hawkins was the wrong choice against a patient Burrell....but Hawkins got Burrell to pop-up on the first pitch.  I think we lucked out on that one.

-Hawpe was getting an earful.  Phillie fans along the RF line were jarring at him all game long.

That's all I got.  GO ROCKIES!  I don't have tickets to today's game so I'll be home watching.  Go Morales!

Pics...
I have a few pictures from the game.  I'll try to get them up later.  Rox Girl, how would I go about posting pictures?

If you have them stored somewhere on the net
Like Photobucket or someplace similar, you just put the URL inside the quote marks of this command: <img src="">.

I'm going to today's game
I could barely sleep last night thinking about it. Too excited. We are sitting in 207, which is probably right above where you were yesterday.

Francis....
I didn't realize he warmed up in the 7th.  Not an injury, I hope.

Yeah!
Crazy....Francis threw his warmup pitches (even batted in the 6th inning).  Right after his warmup, Clint went to go get him.

With Pat Burrell up....I'm guessing that Clint changed his mind at the last min and went to go get Hawkins (which was the right decision.....but he should have pinch hit for Francis in the 6th!)

According to Hurdle
And I'm paraphrasing until I find a link, he had a last minute "gut feeling" that he should switch out Francis. He said sometimes these gut feelings turn out to be right, sometimes they turn out to be indigestion. As long as we keep on winning, this doesn't become an issue.

Radio announcers said
It was to give LaTroy time to get warmed up in the BP.

ugh...
I'm not sure I'm comfortable with a manager that manages by 'gut feeling', but it does explain many of his actions.  I do think his gut has lost a few games for the Rockies over the years, however.

I guess in his defense, I remember the days of Bill McCartney at CU.  He would do some indefensible crazy things from time to time and yet manage to win.

Love / Hate
You couldn't help but have a love/hate relationship with McCartney.

He was a great recruiter, great coach, had them playing great and then he did mind-boggling things during games.
