Rockies sign Steve Finley
The Rockies have signed Steve Finley to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. Finley will compete with Cory Sullivan, Ryan Spilborghs and Alexis Gomez for a bench spot.
This signing seems rather pointless, given the depth of major league-ready outfielders already in camp. Although, this is just a minor league deal and there is little risk involved.
Do Hurdle and O'Dowd really consider Finley an upgrade over the Gomez/Spilborghs/Sullivan group?
Update [2007-2-25 11:5:23 by Russ]: Here's the reason why Finley signed with the Rockies from Moggeee at McCovey Chronicles:
That's why he went Finley will be placed nightly in the humidor, to prevent any further rusting.

It has to be a look/see signing
The upside of the signing would be that Steve's found a brief fountain of youth that will revitalize his power and he becomes a solid pinch hitter and power alternative to Taveras every fifth or sixth day. Basically, a limited exposure .270/.340/.440 type, which would make for a nice caddy.
Downside is that he's dropped in the post spring cut-down.
Projection systems, like PECOTA, don't see anything left in the tank, and would need a flukish production boost to be valuable. To that degree, it's still unlikely that he could outproduce the competition for the backup role. However, the skill set could benefit Finley in the race, assuming he hits above the expected. He's got more power and patience than Sullivan, and more defensive ability than Gomez. A healthy and relatively effective Finley can add the value that Taveras cannot, namely power and, say it with me, "veteran leadership." While I've outlined the differences between Sullivan and Taveras before, they are still fairly similar players when it comes to surface values. However, at this stage of Finley's career, he might not be much more different than the forgotten man, Jeff Salazar, who's had some pop in his past, and may be Finley's equal in the department now.
This move cannot be made for starting competition, because that's more than foolish. Giving more than 200 ABs to a 42 year old whose last good year in a starters role was three years ago, in a "bounceback" season. This team needs a Taveras breakout at age 26 more than it needs a Finley one at 42.
Overall, this should just be a roll of the weighted dice. The rare chance Finley bucks the system will make him worth the try, but at some point this team can't dilute the centerfield pool by giving away too many at bats.
An added beneift
More usefull then Sullivan....
I think the AB's are key...
Unlike with our pitching staff, for the fountain of youth theory to work here, it would have to also come at the expense of a player in their offensive prime (Spillborghs or Sullivan) or the best case would be that he'd take a spot that had John Mabry or Alexis Gomez's name written on it. He might be better over the course of a season than Mabry, but the other three would all have to suffer some sort of collapse for this to make sense. I guess he's good to have in camp, but I imagine he has some sort of provision to opt out of his contract instead of going to the Springs, so a long sighted emergency fill-in, veteran for the playoff run scenario seems far fetched too.
Plus, as David points out, there's Jeff Salazar.
For me, there's just not enough upside to make it worth it without a complete reversal to a player we last saw three years ago. According to Baseball Reference, his most comparable player through the age of 41 is Tony Perez, who had a renaissance at the age of 43 when he was used mainly as a situational hitter. I guess we hope Finley has something similar in store at 42 as this mysterious veteran left-handed presence off the bench that the team is looking for.
Spilborghs should have a spot on the team.
Taveras is completely worthless against southpaws. He has a .242/.292.314 career line and his base-stealing abilities are almost entirely neutralized (5 career SB vs. LHP) when a lefty is on the mound, so wouldn't it make sense to platoon Spilborghs and Taveras?
Re: Spilly
Spilly's problem
Hurdle probably wants to have at least one lefty bat off the bench, which gives Sully, Gomez, Salazar, Mabry, and Finley an advantage. Considering how awful Taveras is against lefties, it would make more sense to have a CF who hits lefties well... but that's apparently not really what Clint is looking for. My best guess is that Salazar will be the fifth outfielder, but I could be wrong.
