Wednesday Morning Rockpile

So the Rockies will get their first glimpse of game action this Spring today, with a short trip to the White Sox' field at Tucson Electric Park. The Sox lineup has some familiar names attached to it. Leading off will be Darin Erstad, who might have been with the Rockies had we not gotten Willy Taveras this offseason. It will be interesting to see which center fielder has the better 2007. At the other end of their lineup is the recently exonerated Juan Uribe, who had to arrive to camp a little late due to legal issues stemming from a shooting in his native Dominican.

The Rockies, for their part, are promising a more open offense right from the start, according to Tracy Ringolsby. Less bunting and more aggressive baserunning (particularly in extending singles to doubles and doubles to triples) should pay off well for the team's scoring chances. Of course, it also helps to have a heart of the order as potent as ours is, as Troy Renck at the Postp points out.

The other interesting item in the Ringolsby report for the News is the repositioning of our outfield defenders, five to ten feet more shallow than they've played in the past. Watching Matt Holliday run back on balls hit over his head isn't pretty, but this should prevent those awkward stabs he and Brad Hawpe make on hits that fall in front of them. Neither are that big on diving, and if the team's spray charts are correct, this should prevent more runs from scoring against our pitching. So to sum up: more runs for the offense, fewer allowed for the defense = happier Rox Girl.

The Blake Street Bomber reunion has hit some scheduling snags, and will not take place in April as was initially suggested. Hopefully the Rockies can find a time that's good for everybody, but the second option is to honor each of our former sluggers individually. Either way, recognition for the group that led the team to it's only playoff appearance is overdue.

Why am I so happy to see so many fluff pieces about relief pitchers filling the dispatches from Tucson?

Consider the alternative. Every day that the team beat reporters aren't focusing on who's feeling stiff or sore, who's caught up in the latest steroid scandal, or which former manager/team executive has been named in a call girl scandal is a pretty good day to me.

Congratulations to Fariview High grad Jesse Crain, who cashed in on a three year $3.25 million extension with the Twins yesterday. If they ever should feel a need to trade him, I think I know one team that will be calling.

more wide open offense?
the rockies need to mature a little.  every spring they talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk.  yap, yap, yap.  we're gonna do this, we're gonna do that.  insert monfort prediction here.

todd helton is right.  everyone just needs to shut the hell up.

on a side note, hurdle is a wise man, funny, a decent motivator, but a subpar in-game strategist.  i think he's the difference between a 90-win team that keeps it interesting through september, and the 81 they will win.

by Good Ol Larry on Feb 28, 2007 8:56 AM MST reply actions

I can't disagree
I'll believe the "open offense" stuff when I see it.

by Rox Girl on Feb 28, 2007 9:07 AM MST up reply actions

furthermore...
why would you ANNOUNCE your strategy re: outfield allignment?

"ok national league, here's what we plan on doing, just so you know.  and if you want to see scouting reports on how we plan on pitching to your players, just send a self-addressed stamped envelope to 2001 Blake St., Denver, CO, 80204."

and aside from the stupidy factor of divulging this info, don't talk about how you're gonna shift your allignment, just shift your effing allignment.

by Good Ol Larry on Feb 28, 2007 9:11 AM MST up reply actions

Here, I kind of disagree.
I don't think batters have that much control over where they hit the ball to be able to capitalize on the Rockies' announced intention to shift the outfield defense. If they did, I would think we'd have a lot more .300+ hitters and .400 wouldn't be so uncommon. When Barry Bonds or Jason Giambi step to the plate, they know exactly how the defense is going to shift right, but they don't go changing their approach at the plate to dunk the ball into left field at the expense of a possible HR.

Although, you've got a solid point in the second paragraph.

by Rox Girl on Feb 28, 2007 9:21 AM MST up reply actions

What he said
I totally agree.  Especially with Hurdle.  He seems to be a great interview, and a funny sound bite, and a guy you'd like to have a beer with.  But watching him handle pitchers and pinch hitters is just painful.

by Redhawk on Feb 28, 2007 9:37 AM MST up reply actions

Go read any team's home paper
and you'll get the same message.  This isn't a characteristic unique of the Rockies, this is a common sports theme.  The same stuff happens in Broncos training camp, Avs, Nuggets...

Every team has the do more/do less, improve here, emphasize there pre-season puff pieces...

by David OhNo on Feb 28, 2007 4:12 PM MST up reply actions

to a certain extent, yes
and i know writers need to find something to write about, but it would serve the rockies well to be tight lipped and full of action just once.

by Good Ol Larry on Feb 28, 2007 5:19 PM MST up reply actions

well that's foolish
because winning would do it better.

I'm happy as a clam
Spring training games started, and some enterprising fellow over on Viva El Birdos discovered MLB.com Gameday for ST games. They only update once per batter, to show the result, but who cares?! I am watching baseball via Gameday for the first time in four months and this is wonderful!! :D

Yeah
MLB.com is lying right now and says that the Tigers-Mets game is available on MLB.TV (the Rockies' page lies about their game as well, but tomorrow's game is on, and not during class for me. :))

About that Tigers-Mets game...
I bought MLB.TV and I'm trying to watch the Tigers and Mets game, but all I get is a black screen that is too large for the media player window...are you getting this same problem?

by rockiesfan06 on Feb 28, 2007 12:36 PM MST up reply actions

Yes
Pretty much... either way I can't watch it.  Neither team's site lists the game as being available on MLB.TV.  I remember last season I think I had to use Internet Explorer (I usually use Firefox) to watch games on there, but that didn't even work.

Good to know
It's good to know that I'm not the only one that can't see the Mets-Tigers game either. The Rockies-White Sox game is on gameday audio.

by lgh77 on Feb 28, 2007 12:57 PM MST up reply actions

Yeah
Listening to a game in class is a little more difficult than watching.  I can have an MLB.TV game on in the background and still somewhat pay attention.

Sweet!
I got on the Rockies game on MLB Gameday.  Here's the lineup (ahhh, how great it feels to say that):

Taveras cf
Matsui 2b
Atkins 3b
Helton 1b
Holliday lf
Hawpe rf
Javy c
Barmes ss
Torrealba dh

(Cookie is the starting pitcher.)

Now I know I won't be paying attention in class.

Is Garland even trying to pitch, or is he more interested in throwing and getting his arm stretched out?

Either way, it doesn't seem to matter when even BARMES (shock, horrors, gasp) is getting in on the RBI action.

Don't rush to judgement too quickly
This is only the first game of the season. It's also the first time that Buchholz has pitched in Arizona in the dry air. He's going to need a little time to adjust. There's also a 16 mph win blowing out so that's not helping either. Looking at the entire game, I see 12 doubles and 1 homerun on 22 hits. Garland even said that balls that would be routine fly balls anywhere else were bouncing off of the walls. I'd wait a couple of games before I make any judgements.

..."He cruises into second with a double" one more time, I'm going to snap. I've heard that exact phrase at least four times in the last inning.
