Monday Morning Rockpile:

Besides the huge sigh of relief that went out of the collective lungs of Rockies fans when we learned Tulo's wrist wasn't broken yesterday, here's the latest:

As was noted in the comments to the game thread yesterday, the Rockies made their first official cuts from the major league camp. Headed to the minors are Alberto Arias, Greg Reynolds, Juan Morillo, Franklin Morales, Eric DuBose, and Josh Newman. None of these six had much shot at making the roster out of Spring, so the cuts mostly serve to free up space and innings for those that do. For Reynolds and Morales, this could very well be the last Spring they experience the dreaded shears of roster reduction, while the rest have varying degrees of chances for future appearances with the Rockies this season. According to yesterday's notes column, an additional six to nine players should be cut some time today.

The Hardball Times' Chris Constancio continues with his best young players of each position series, this time mentioning Dexter Fowler among the league's top center field prospects.

Speaking of prospects, Baseball America's Matt Meyers is in Arizona this week doing a tour of all the camps. He hasn't gotten to the Rockies yet, and I'll be sure to point it out when he does, but he did have a run-in with some guy named Barry while waiting for the Giants' Tim Lincecum. It's always good to know what's going on with the divisional rivals. Luckily in this case, outside of Lincecum, Jonathan Sanchez and Angel Villalona, the Giants don't have a lot to look at.

Former Rockie Jeromy Burnitz has decided to retire, a decision that was necessitated by nobody wanting his declining services this season.

Can we really
just refer to "Barry" when talking about the Giants these days?

when you add the words
run-in, surly, syringe, roidhead, or similar signifiers, I think most readers will be able to distinguish which Barry you refer to. I mean really. Did you think Zito would have had a problem with Meyers in hte locker room? At any rate, Barry being Barry was the title of Meyers' post, and I knew which one he was referring too. Bonds has so out evoloved the need of his last name that Zito probably should just consider it an unwritten clause in his gazillion dollar contract that he go out and change his given name.

Well yeah
When you mentioned "run-in" I assumed you were talking about Bonds.  Now, if you had mentioned that he had a "chat" with Barry... I would have assumed Zito.

although, of course, now that you bring it up
I see that I actually put the words "rin-in" up there, which could have gone either way, since we all know how fond Zito is of rinning.

Sorry for the typo everybody.

Spring Training comment link
Since the spyder doesn't pick up on these, Drew Littleton's editorial cartoon this week is about spring training.  The first 2 weren't that funny.

Today's was so spot on I don't think it was too funny either..In a "BaHAHAHA....WAIT...that's NOT FUNNY!" sort of way.

The last sketch
Definitely my favorite is the last sketch he's got there.  Tavares and the road runner, it sure seems like he's never been caught this spring.

Burnitz's "retirement"
Jeremy had such a good year here 3 years ago.  He played a surprisingly decent CF.  Had a monster homer at a game I was at that still has me talking.

He then said he wanted to play on the West Coast close to his home in Arizona, which is why he didn't resign with the Rockies, expecting a multiyear deal with the Padres and it wasnt about the money.....only to sign 1 year with the Cubs at bigger money then the Padres or Rox offered.  Then another one year deal w/ the Pirates...

As a left hander with pop, I would have thought even in his declining years someone would have given him a bench job (I think he would be as good as Finley and better then Mabry)

...but alas....The door finally hit him on the butt....

New cuts
I just got a text message saying that Javy Lopez has been cut. I guess the catchers have been decided.

I can't say I disagree, I just wish Yorvit would look a little better out there.

I figured that was probably info people would want
if they're reading Purple Row via feed burners, so I hope you don't mind me posting it to the main page as a rumor.

No problem
I'm subscribed to the Rockies alerts. Everytime there is a transaction, I get a text message. That's where I got my info.
