Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Three teams looking at Kim

In tonight's Around the Horn" column by Ken Rosenthal, we find out that the Dodgers, Marlins and A's are looking at Kim. Only the As are looking at him as a starter. If the Marlins want him then they'll surely have him compete for the closer's position. As it stands now, I think either Matt Lindstrom or Henry Owens will wind up with that slot in the bullpen. Maybe include Sully in a deal with Kim?

I'm not impressed with the Rockies' interest in Mark Hendrickson. He allows way too many base runners and home runs and doesn't strike out nearly enough batters, at least for a starter. However, he was performing decently last year for the Rays until he was shipped to the Dodgers. This organization has a number of former quarterbacks, so why not add a former basketball player?

Update [2007-3-19 0:35:5 by malakian]:

More from Rosenthal: Several teams interested in Barmes

The Cubs and Rangers are among the clubs interested in Rockies shortstop Clint Barmes as a super-utility player. The Rockies, who place a greater value on Barmes, are likely to keep him even if they name Troy Tulowitzki their starter at short.

Hendrickson?
Based on how he's been performing this spring training, he's not a better option than what we already have. In fact, his numbers are similiar to Buchholz's when you take hits and runs allowed into account. Fogg has less innings and a lower ERA. Jimenez has outperformed all three of them.

Bottom line, Hendrickson is not a clear upgrade over what we already have. All he would be is a road block to the young starters that are coming up. Leave Hendrickson in L.A. and get some prospects.

Is Harding
implying that part of the reason Tom Martin has a place in the bullpen is a result of the relative pittance of money they have invested in him?

He seemed to be implying Something
Harding DID seem to be implying Something.  I took it the opposite way then you did, in that they don't have much money invested in them if they needed to make a move.

But something seemed to be implied by inserting their money/pay in that line.  It was very odd to insert it there.

4 Lefties? Seems that Gallo's got a shot, and maybe Martin's job isn't such a lock (I'm hoping on that last part, more then it was said.  No team, not even the bumbling Rockies, will carry 4 lefties, especially if they have a history of not getting out Righties like Martin and Gallo) So we have to add Gallo to Herges as having a shot at bullpen jobs.

What I really thought was odd, was Harding was saying Rameriez has ONE option left. Isn't that what he was saying?

That's exactly what he's saying
Ramirez it turns out does have an option left. I know I was one of those that didn't have a correct understanding of the rule before and I said that he didn't, so I'm sorry for being misleading.

After I posted this
I saw your posts from previous days, and I completely understand.

With this information on Ramirez and Corpas, Does this change anything at this point in Spring Training?

Is Herges in?  and if yes, who's out? Ramirez or Corpas? What about Keppel? Gallo? Martin?

My take is that Herges is probibly in if the season started today.  Who's out is a good question.

I also seem to be reading that Gallo has made it into the mix to at least have a legit shot of a spot.  Again who's spot is a good question..I think it's Martin's spot, but that may be wishful thinking on my part.

I don't think even Hurdle is so stupid as to take Herges AND Gallo AND Martin, and neither Ramirez OR Corpas

Only real competition
I believe the bullpen is the only real competition that we have had in camp thus far. It will be very interesting to see how if plays out.

You mentioned Keppel. He's out of the equation. He was reassigned a couple days ago.

It seems like there's four guys fighting for 2 spots; Corpas, Ramirez, Gallo and Herges.

Personally, I think Gallo should be fighting Martin, too. Based on performance so far this spring, I would actually give Gallo the nod but the managers seem to love Martin for some reason.

This should be fun to see how this plays out as we go on.

Speaking of Jimenez
Harding has an article on the Rockies website talking about Jimenez.

It would take a run of injuries for right-handed prospect Ubaldo Jimenez (0-1, 3.86 ERA this spring) to break with the Rockies. But he has impressed the staff and as of Sunday was still in Major League camp.

"He needs to go down and start," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said. "We need to keep him on the same gameplan, the same track. He's pitching great. He's closed ground."

It sounds like he's out of the 5th starter race, too. This just further enforces by belief that this starting competition has been scripted.

Jimenez
I watched that interview live and Hurdle's quote was in response to a question about putting Jimenez in the bullpen.

He actually seemed pretty happy (judging by tone and content of his response) with Jimenez and basically seemed to be saying that they just wanted him to keep doing what he has been doing and get more starts in at AAA.

When asked about what Corpas needed to do his response was pretty much "Nothing, he is already doing it, just keep doing what he is doing."

He sort of dodged the question about Corpas starting out with the team though.

Wow
After taking a look at how Oakland's 5th starter candidates were doing this spring, I came across Joe Kennedy's stat-line.

Joe Kennedy:
9 2/3 IP, 31 Hits, 22 ER, 6 BB, 5 SO

31 HITS in less than 10 innings.... That's incredible. No wonder they're interested in B.K.

R you in?
