Early Game Open Thread:

Most of our lucky friends are probably just about ready to start making their way to Coors right about now. And if they're not, they should be. You've got to get to the temple early on Opening Day people, catch some BP, soak in the atmosphere of 48,000 roaring Rox fans. Mmmm...

Anyway, for the rest of us we can look at the out of town scoreboard in the meantime:

Starting at 11:05 MDT:

Atlanta vs Philly
Florida vs Washington
Tampa Bay vs New York
Toronto vs Detroit

At 12:05, our first divisional competition gets underway with the Dodger tilt:

Cleveland vs White Sox
Los Angeles vs Milwaukee

At 2:10:

Chicago vs Cincinnati

It looks like Furcal's out of the lineup for the Dodgers, I'm hoping he's still rusty by the time the Rockies get to Chavez Ravine next week. I'm sorry, that lineup in LA just seems so weak right now for a divisional heavyweight.

I am in New York.
I would rather be in Colorado. Meh. :| My sister and father will be at the park in about an hour and a half, taking advantage of some prime tickets, while I sit here, wear my Rockies shirt and necklace in their honor, and mutter futilely. When the game DOES start, I shall be tracking it on Gameday, even if that is only a poor substitute. After the bad taste that was the Cards' loss last night, I'm lookin' for a WIN to make me feel better!

GO ROCKIES!

Yep.
I'm in Tennessee, so I'm obviously not at the game either.  And to give you some understanding, in our Facebook "Hope Springs Eternal" group, I have the title of the "only Rockies fan anyone has ever met."

I just noticed
that the Opening Day countdown is off.  It should be 2 hours, 43 minutes, not 3.

Yep,
I told somebody else that I think Russ is counting on the first part of the game being a repeat of last season, and implying that we should really only pay attention to the exciting conclusion.

Must have only changed
today. It was in sync with the countdown clock on the Official Site through last night.

Opening Day!
Wow, I can't believe the 4-letter network just came to A-Rod's defense with that error. Usually they just skewer him for three hours. I just can't hate the guy like most other people.

The Diamondbacks though? I CAN hate (or serious dislike) them with the best of them. Rockies win today!

Eh
I think it helps his cause that the Yankees ended up getting out of the inning without giving up a run.  The fans seemed to be appreciative of him when he came up to bat.  I have the sound off so I don't know if they booed when he struck out.

Geez
Kazmir's thrown 30 pitches and he's still not out of the first inning.  That's not going to work.

30 Pitches
Better Scott Kazmir throws 30 first-inning pitches than Aaron Cook, I always say.

Right
Let me put it this way.  I get out of class at 3:10 (CT, meaning five minutes after game time.)  I'll probably be home around 3:15, so if I catch any of the top of the first inning, things are not good.

o'dowd/hurdle contracts extended
On Mike Rosen's show (KOA Radio in Denver) it was just announced the Rockies have signed O'Dowd and Hurdle to two year extensions on their contracts. More details to come I'm sure.

I hope this is a late April fools joke.
Giving Hurdle an extension is an absolute joke.

Agreed...
I can't get rid of the sneaking feeling that we're screwed as long as Clint "Mr. Nice Guy Little League Manager" Hurdle is at the helm.

GM
I feel like giving the GM an extension is a worse move than giving one to Hurdle, but that's just me.

O'Dowd
I think he's done a good job over the last few years and deserves this.

There is absolutely no justification for giving Hurdle an extension though.

This really put a damper on my opening day....

I agree
I have my issues with O'Dowd, namely his preference for veteran status over talent in pitching, and his aversion of risk in mid-season, but he can't make everyone happy all the time, and he deserves credit for putting the organization on the right track and surrounding himself with excellent individuals like Geivett, Shmidt, Gustafson, and the like.

O'Dowd has earned another two years to see this project through.

Looks like
Elijah Dukes got a homer in his first major league AB (NOT plate appearance -- he walked the first time up.)

I'm glad that's one team with a stacked farm
We aren't up against in our own division, it's bad enough worrying about the Dodgers and Snakes.

Extension
I'm not sure that one winning season in seven years qualifies as 'deserving', sadly.

This is going to be a long hour and a half before 4:05 EDT.

If the Rockies ceased to exist after today
I'd be hard pressed not to become a Devil Rays fan.  They're just to exciting a team not to pull for.  If they don't trade Baldelli to Colorado, he shouldn't go anywhere.

Lowe really struggling in his start
It would be nice if this is what we can expect of Derek this year.

White Sox having issue
Contreras leaves after 1+ inning, having given up 8 runs (all earned) on 7 hits (including a lead off homer to Sizemore on the 2nd pitch of the game) and a walk with only 1 strikeout. The Sox are now down 11-2 in the bottom of the 3rd.
