Rockies Interested In Capellan?

I'm not sure what we're offering for the disgruntled Brewers reliever, but there are some whispers circulating that we've inquired about him. I can't find a written MSM source to confirm this just yet, but there are a couple of Brewers bloggers that indicate the Rockies' interest was announced in Milwaukee. Obviously it's just the faintest of whispers to begin with, and without legit sourcing has to be taken with a considerable grain of salt. We have our own disgruntled reliever to deal with, anyway, but just thought you'd be interested to know what I've been seeing.

Update [2007-4-5 18:8:2 by Russ]: Jayson Stark supports this at the end of his "Rumblings and Grumblings" column.

Capellan
Well, look which Sounds player I might not be seeing tonight.  If he does pitch I'll report back.

thanks...
Tell us if you see Ardoin, too. Because I don't know why we wouldn't want him back... ;)

Ardoin
doesn't play for Nashville... that's Closser. :)

Former catchers...
they must all be running together in my mind now. Ardoin's with the Nats, now, isn't he?

Excellent
I was hoping the Rockies might pursue Capellan, but I didn't think they actually would due to his attitude problems.

Capellan would be a nice addition to our collection of Dominican power relievers (Morillo, Bautista, Ramirez).

I wonder what we're offering?

that's the big question...
its a lock the Rockies immediately offered Kim in hopes to get rid of him, but I would think that Milwaukee would at least want a decent guy in return.

Yep,
Although the same blog I linked above was smoking crack in hoping for Jeff Baker in another post. It's got to be somebody (or somebodies) in between those two extremes.

by Rox Girl on Apr 5, 2007 4:16 PM MDT up reply actions

Clint Barmes maybe?
Wasn't Milwaukee one of the teams interested in Barmes a few months ago?

Hmmm....
It seems like every trade scenario I come up with involves getting rid of Barmes.

Baker
Eh... we might have to trade him and go with Spilborghs.  You have to give value to get value, usually, unless you're trading with Jim Bowden.

We'd need more than Capellan, though
Baker's value exceeds that by quite a margin. If, as the blog post suggests, Milwaukee was willing to give up more of its farm in addition, and I'm talking one of their top eight or so prospects plus Capellan, then I would see it being in the Rox' best interest to trade Baker. Otherwise, it seems the Brewers get far more out of the trade than we do.

by Rox Girl on Apr 5, 2007 4:33 PM MDT up reply actions

I don't buy Baker
There's no reason why Baker would be traded at this point......AT LEAST until Hawpe proves over the long-term that he can handle left-handed pitching.

He's cheap....he's a great bat off the bench....he can fill in 4 spots in the lineup in case someone gets hurt.  He might even take over full time in LF if Holliday gets traded.

Trading Baker right now just doesn't make sense....

Exactly, I should clarify
I would have to be very impressed by what we got back as an immediate upgrade for our chances of winning this year and in the next two or three to consider it. I just looked over Milwaukee's prospects, and outside of their two likely untouchables, Gallardo and Braun, as well as the inured Mark Rogers, I don't know if there's anybody in that system that would meet the criteria. Everybody else, though decent, is too far away from contributing and/or too toolsy to consider.

We need
a CF and maybe a young 2b prospect. And bullpen help always, especially a lefty (which Capellan isn't)

They need: a 3rd baseman, and a #5 Starting pitcher (maybe). And a back up OF that's better then Gabe Gross or Kevin Mench

This looks like a trash for trash trade.  Kim for Capellan?  Barmes for Capellan?

by Redhawk on Apr 5, 2007 5:27 PM MDT up reply actions

They don't need any starters or outfielders.
Their OF situation is very crowded right now and their rotation is stacked (Sheets, Capuano, Bush, Suppan, Vargas, Villanueva with Zach Jackson and Gallardo in AAA).

OF..and starters
Yes, their OF is crowded...I'm just not sure with quality.  And SP I was thinking depending on how close their AAA guys were, and how they grade Vargas

Their only immediate need on the major league level I see is 3b.

Which is why this looks like a trash for trash trade to me.  Kim for Capellan would be great.

by Redhawk on Apr 5, 2007 5:42 PM MDT up reply actions

I agree as far as the OF, but not the pitchers
Our fourth guy, Baker would be an immediate upgrade either in the starting corner outfield or at third base for the Brewers.

Their pitching, however, is as stacked as advertised. Gallardo's close, and Vargas could be the best SP of that trade with the D-backs this season.

by Rox Girl on Apr 5, 2007 5:47 PM MDT up reply actions

and that's why
Baker for Capellan isn't a fair trade on our side.  They get a power hitting starter that is cost certain for several years, we would get a minor league reliever.....granted he's young and has up side...but still a minor league reliever

Tom Martin for Capellan? they need lefties bad..and Martin is a bad lefty

by Redhawk on Apr 5, 2007 5:51 PM MDT up reply actions

I wonder if
a Jorge Cantu for Cappellan trade would work.  Cantu's defense at 3rd is not good, but the last I heard Corey Koskie's concussion isn't getting better, and there's a chance his career maybe over.

Which brings us back to the Rockies, and Barmes, but if I were the Brewers I'd rather have Cantu
