Game #7: Rockies vs Dodgers; Francis vs Schmidt

CNN/SI's John Donovan wasn't impressed by the Rockies' performance in San Diego, ranking them #20 in his latest measure, while the Padres somehow got ranked #5. Seriously, check out that first page, the Dodgers #6, the D-backs #8 and the Rox, who beat the Snakes two out of three last week and went blow for blow with the Padres this weekend are #20! Go figure.

This is a good opportunity to show something. We've got it aligned so our 2-3-4 in the rotation are up against the Dodgers' 3-4-5 and as good as they are, we should be capable of squeezing out two of three here. Starting today, actually, with Franchise taking the hill.

Update [2007-4-9 14:45:19 by Rox Girl]:

According to Tracy Ringolsby at the RMN, Todd Helton gets the day off, with Baker covering and batting sixth.

I think respect is a winning season away
I don't think the Rockies will get their due until they are able to put together a winning season. I have a feeling that even if we are in this thing come late season, we still won't be where we should be in these "power" rankings. But because the Rox have been so bad for so long, we have to be really really good in order for anyone to take notice and think that we might be mediocre.  This is the thing that is starting to drive me crazy about baseball: it seems like what you did three years ago still influences how the media views you today.

I am a brand new hockey fan, and what I have found in hockey is so refreshing I wish I could bring it to baseball.  Coverage isn't limited to a few elite teams; every team is covered even if the team can't fill their own arena (Nashville).  I wish baseball teams got more even airplay, but this isn't going to happen until someone dethrones King George.

it's true,
I still don't get how Arizona gets so much love considering their last three seasons, though. If your going to knock the Rockies for the recent path, be even about it. What I especially don't get is that if you ask insiders in the West, it's a completely different story. Nobody discounts Colorado's lineup this year in the AZ, LA, SD or SF front offices, and while there's some question about the pitching, I can guarantee they are taking notice of what happened last week.

by Rox Girl on Apr 9, 2007 12:00 PM MDT up reply actions

Oops...
Thanks for calling out us Nashvillians for not filling our hockey arena.  Of course... I don't even like hockey.  Putting a hockey team in Nashville = bad idea.

Gary Bettman
Worst commissioner ever.  Take teams out of traditional markets, lower TV ratings, completely erase an entire year of hockey, and still keep your job?  I wish I had that kind of job security.

by MattTheRock on Apr 9, 2007 1:04 PM MDT up reply actions

See here's what I don't get
The NHL must have the worst marketing plan ever. I can't watch any of the games except the ones that are on NBC on the weekends because I don't get VS on my dish Network package.  You never see an ad for hockey in the South the exact place you need to be advertising hockey.  I live near Shreveport, LA and they have a minor league team there and that place gets packed.  But they advertise like crazy.  I also think Hockey tickets are a wee bit pricey for most of us.
Anyway, that's my two cents... two cents that I won't be able to use to buy hockey or baseball tickets.

VS network
Worst decision ever.  Although, I think part of the problem was that after the lockout, ESPN didn't want to show hockey any more.

Nashville's a pretty bad sports town either way.  The AAA baseball team draws in the hundreds most nights (the stadium is old and they're supposed to be getting a new one, blah blah blah, probably not going to happen in the three years I'll be here.)  I guess the Titans are a pretty big draw, but what NFL team isn't?

That was throwing the hardest fastball I could.  In my case, though, we are talking about a person who played second base in little league ball because I literally couldn't make the throw from short without bouncing it in the dirt.

home grown respect
i think a lot of the problem is the fact that our own local media has no faith in the team.  if knuckleheads like paige (yes, im counting him as local) and lincicome (sic) were really upbeat and optimistic, i think the big national types might see us at least slightly differently as well.

Baseball, unlike College Football..opinion doesn't matter.  I'd love the Rockies to have respect.  And I'm actually a little surprised (and slighty miffed too) at how little respect we are getting nationally.

But if we win games...the national press can list us as 30th for all it really matters.

A good start would be to sweep the Dodgers.

College football, though, is the only sport we have where things aren't decided on the field, unless you really buy the "regular season is actually a 12-game playoff" thing.  Every other sport has a good postseason to determine the champion.

From Ringolsby's article above:

The Rockies lineup:

LF Matt Holliday (rh)
RF Brad Hawpe (lh)
1B Jeff Baker (rh)

The Dodgers lineup:

I put the Rosenthal bit in this AM's Rockpile
Picking up the Kim option was still a good decision even if we have to cut him and pick up the tab. It's just a sign of the depth we have at starting pitcher, which is something vital for success. If you look at the note above that on the Padres, which position would you rather be in? Having to cut an underperforming pitcher because you have too many decent ones, or hoping two forty plus year olds can stay healthy all year because you don't have enough? I'd take the latter every time.

by Rox Girl on Apr 9, 2007 1:17 PM MDT up reply actions

words from a kim supporter
i thought it was great that we picked up the option and i stand by that opinion.  how were we to know back then that hirsh would be ready to go out the gate?  or that wed end up with lawrence and lopez and that theyd both be ready to contribute?  better to have too many pitchers and have to eat a couple million when you cut/trade one than to not have enough.  just ask the nationals.  all i ask for in terms of the kim situation is that we trade him to the AL (even if we heat his entire salary and get a case of beer in return) so that he cant somehow face us and hurt us, at least not this year.
Rockies in October.

by LarryB303 on Apr 9, 2007 1:29 PM MDT up reply actions

Definitely
I would rather get something in return for him, even if it isn't much.  There's no real reason for us to rush this move, unless we're suddenly missing Tom Martin and his gawd-awful ability to give up long homeruns.  We can wait for a little while to hopefully get one prospect with "upside."  I'd prefer a left-handed pitcher, but that's just me.  Basically someone who can tie their shoes without tripping, and then we hope that their time in our system finds some hidden talent.

by MattTheRock on Apr 9, 2007 1:35 PM MDT up reply actions

I too supported signing Kim (luke warmly)
We did end up with too many pitchers.  Bucholtz had a great spring, Hirsh had a great 1st outing, and so did Fogg.  Lawrence turned out to be close, and Uballo Jimenez looked like he had took a huge step, and is ready.  ALL of which could have gone the other way. A betting person would have assumed a mix bag. But the Rockies had the BEST case scenerio, and all worked out.

Now hind-sight, I wish we could have Kim's money back and placed it into the bullpen.  But we did invest 800k for a veteran Lefty....his name is Tom Martin

Maybe it's just early in the season, but our rookies look pretty overmatched at the bottom of the order.  In Iannetta's case I can kind of see it, since there wasn't much point in leaving him in the minors, but was skipping Troy past AAA a good idea in retrospect?

re: overmatched
I can understand what you're saying, but I definitely think it's too early to take any action.  Besides, do we really have any better options?  I guess one could argue that it would be better to let them work on their game at AAA, but I think they're only going to get better with each at-bat they get at the Major League level.  Their defense has been solid and that's always something you like to see from a rookie. If his offense is struggling but he's not losing focus on defense, that's an encouraging sign.

by rockiesfan06 on Apr 9, 2007 2:44 PM MDT up reply actions

Yeah
I agree that it's too early to do anything.  If Iannetta is still hitting under .200 at the end of April, it might be time to do something, but I wouldn't pull the trigger right now.  I'm just saying from seeing their at bats that they look overmatched at the plate right now.

But, I agree that they're probably going to get better.  And Tulo just flashed his defense right there.

Sure he lifted his back foot on that swing, and it was a pitch that missed up, but Willy's one of the guys that just needs to catch a break so he can settle down.

Hopefully, this will get him to not press so much at the plate next time up, although, prior to the double being hit, that was a pretty nice at bat, not fishing for balls out of the zone, and working it back to a hitter's count.

Too small a sample size
Taylor has only pitched in one game. If you'll recall, he had a rough first outing of the spring, too. He needed to get the butterflies out of his system. Actually, seeing as how he hasn't pitched in 5 days, he'll probably need to shake the rust off.

by lgh77 on Apr 9, 2007 5:07 PM MDT up reply actions

Buchholz
I think he'll only come in if there's a blowout right now.  I don't think Hurdle has confidence in him.

Although the people that he has shown confidence in aren't exactly making my heart a flutter... more pound like a subwoofer on overdrive.

by MattTheRock on Apr 9, 2007 5:06 PM MDT up reply actions

If so...
You need to let Buchholz pitch. If Hurdle is saving him for long relief outings only, the way our starters have been going, it could be weeks before Buchholz pitches. You can't expect a guy to be perfect if it weeks between appearances. Bullpen sessions are not the same as facing real life hitters. I think we know why Hurdle is not using Kim but he needs to at least get Buchholz some face time and see what he can do. If he sucks, they can look to trade him and get another reliever that could help. If he does well, you know you can use him. Either way, you're saving the other guys in the bullpen from having to pitch.

Corpas!
So who's arm will fall off first? Hawkins or Corpas?

Kim must not be thinking about baseball again today.

Use him or Cut him...we need some alternative arms in the 'pen!

by Redhawk on Apr 9, 2007 5:06 PM MDT reply actions

I somewhat agree
Yet there's no way I want to see Kim in there in a three run ballgame.

Corpas does a great job once again though and gets a 1-2-3 inning.

by avsfan4ever33 on Apr 9, 2007 5:08 PM MDT up reply actions

Despite the fact
that Corpas will likely keel over and become a Corpse if Hurdle keeps working him like this, he had a very quick 1-2-3 eighth. It's nice to have trust in a reliever.

Bullpen rotation
Here's what I can see of our bullpen

Rameriz, Corpas, Hawkins, then Fuentes in a save situation.

And 3 other guys to get some nachos, and hold jackets

See Willy...
Make contact and even on an easy grounder to short you can beat it out.

Willy!!!!
That's what we've been waiting six games for.

Willy T with his second hit of the day? Even of the run-out-the-ground-ball variety? No. Way.

It's amazing what Willy can do...
...we he actually gets on base.  The threat of his speed alone messes with the pitcher's mind and causes bad pitches, balks, etc.

I never doubted you!  (until the next at bat...I'm gonna out Yankee fan the Yankee fans!)

(Speaking of Yankees
They are now facing Sidney Ponson, who is actually being paid to start a game for the Twins. He has given up 1 run already on 3 hits with no outs... some things do not change).

by Redhawk on Apr 9, 2007 5:27 PM MDT up reply actions

Seriously?
This is not a situation I would put Buchholz in. He's never had that great of numbers with runners on and to bring him in in a bases loaded situation with one out would be suicide.

Maybe Corpas should be the closer
Fuentes can set up. I don't need this kind of drama late in the game...

I've been thinking the same thing
more and more.  Fuentes has struggled since last years all star game.

And that means we dont' need Martin from the left side

by Redhawk on Apr 9, 2007 5:29 PM MDT up reply actions

I've
been an advocate of trading Fuentes ever since the Angels showed some interest in him during the 2005 season, but I'm sure Corpas would have this kind of drama at some point as well.

by Russ Oates on Apr 9, 2007 5:30 PM MDT up reply actions

No relever never blows a save/game
but I like moving Corpas up to the closer...

by Redhawk on Apr 9, 2007 5:31 PM MDT up reply actions

Not exactly what I meant
How many times does a closer allow the bases loaded in the 9th? That's drama. A man on second, that's intrigue. Semantics maybe, but we'd feel differently in both situations.

by Rox Girl on Apr 9, 2007 5:32 PM MDT reply actions

Another W
Win at least one one more in this series and the team still won't get any love.

by Russ Oates on Apr 9, 2007 5:32 PM MDT reply actions

I don't know if I can take that every game
Alright Brian, next time I want you to strikeout the side. Ok?

Nonetheless, I'm very happy to get a win and spoil the Dodgers opener. Francis pitched very well, the offense actually gave the team some support, and Fuentes buckled down and held the Dodgers to only one run in a clutch situation.

by avsfan4ever33 on Apr 9, 2007 5:32 PM MDT reply actions

Whoof
Game over, Martin retired. Nice bit of Houdini-esque wriggling there, Brian, but I might feel more comfortable with Corpas in the ninth-inning slot. Still, it's early, time for things to change, and hey, we won!

by ES46NE10 on Apr 9, 2007 5:33 PM MDT reply actions

We can't go all year
with a 4 man bullpen.  If you can't use 'em in a game..then what good are they? Pitch 'em or release/demote 'em

by Redhawk on Apr 9, 2007 5:35 PM MDT reply actions

Agreed
Waiting so long between appearances hurts the entire bullpen. Using four guys wears them out and not using the other three makes them rusty. How does that help the team?

by lgh77 on Apr 9, 2007 5:38 PM MDT up reply actions

the hard part
is those 4 are head and shoulders better then the other 3, or at least Kim and Affeldt, I haven't seen Bucholtz enough yet.  So the easy call in a close game is to go to the 4 good ones.

So either trust the bad 3..or get in someone that they do trust enough to use

Still thinking cloning Corpas is a good idea

by Redhawk on Apr 9, 2007 5:43 PM MDT up reply actions

Also my point
We haven't seen Buchholz but once in a blow out situation. We don't know what he can do in a close game like that. He did pitch a tie game in spring training and did well. Hurdle has to put him in there and test him out to see how he performs.

by lgh77 on Apr 9, 2007 6:02 PM MDT up reply actions

Question...
I feel like if we had dodged some bad luck, this team could very easily be undefeated.  Anyone agree?

by MattTheRock on Apr 9, 2007 5:35 PM MDT reply actions

AHHH
I feel so unclean... I just agreed with Frazier.

by MattTheRock on Apr 9, 2007 5:38 PM MDT up reply actions

Save?
Shouldn't have Fuentes got the save?

by avsfan4ever33 on Apr 9, 2007 5:47 PM MDT reply actions

nope not a save situation
basicly a Save situation is when the tieing run is in the hole

by Redhawk on Apr 9, 2007 5:50 PM MDT up reply actions

Bullpen usage is fine
We've been in a lot of close games, and had a lot of late leads (which is a good thing), so I am fine using our best 4 in these high leverage situations.  Things always even out as the season goes on.  No worries here.

by Roberbola on Apr 9, 2007 5:48 PM MDT reply actions

That's more like it
Rox went 4-15 against these guys last year; Heck, just 9-10 would have given us an 81-81 record.

Only one game, but nice way to start out this year vs. Dodgers especially with their packed house/home opener.
