Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Sunday Morning Rockpile, or How Many Queen References Can I Make In This Piece?

So I was listening to Queen yesterday and that inspired this little piece.

To the Rockies: You are Under Pressure. Under pressure to keep this going. You're making us believe in this Crazy Little Thing Called Love. We all need Somebody to Love in the sports world and we chose you. Oh, we loved you before this, but right now that love is so much more vibrant than before.

You're in a Bicycle Race and thankfully have put each foot on a pedal. You're in control and looking to make it through the rugged mountain stages. As long as Another One Bites the Dust (read: series win), you're making us happy. Don't Stop (Me) Now or We Will Rock You.

It's time to keep this Bohemian Rhapsody going and (I Want) to Break Free free from those notions others hold of you. You're Princes of the Universe with the the blood of kings inside you. But don't go telling people, "We Are the Champions."

Still, The Show Must Go On either way.

And always, always remember that Fat Bottomed Girls Make the Rockin' World Go 'Round.

Patrick Saunders examines the language barrier that several Rockies have gone through. Maybe the solution isn't just for the players to learn English, but also to follow what Hurdle believes:

"I wouldn't say I try to be a chameleon, but I try to find common fabric to work with each and every one of them," Hurdle said. "I think, I hope, that helps the Latin players have a little more comfort, knowing you are making that effort to speak with them in their language about things other than baseball."

Jamie Quirk and Mike Gallego each received a great gift for Father's Day: more time with their sons.

Happy Father's Day!

Joel Sherman of the NY Post
believes Brian Fuentes might be available, and that the Yanks would have to overpay for him (or most other available relievers). Maybe he should check back on the first day of summer and realize that the Rockies aren't likely to be in a position to trade him away during the season.

How about
checking and noticing that the Rockies are in virtually the same position as the Yankees right now?  Except, of course, everybody knows the Yankees are going to make a run at the playoffs while the Rockies are playing over their heads right now and are going to come back down soon.

Now this is the weirdest
Rock Pile section ever.

But entertaining.

The Post noted that Weathers might sign early next week. Renick noted that Kaz was a big reason for the Rockies winning streak.  Also Sullivan was quoted as saying he needed to be ready to hit at any time as the Rockies don't have another left hander off the bench.  Which seemed to echo Rox Girl's fears.

Also Renick's column mentioned Barrett as a possible candidate for trade, but his value as a hitter would make the Cubs not want to part with him, though the Rockies would be one team that would call about him. I still think Barrett + Floyd for Barmes + a guy like Kozanski or U. Jimenez or Fogg looks good. (granted from our side of the table)

My real question is are the Rockies even talking to Davis (Kendrell? you know the kid from HS, going to Tenn. or Georga or some SEC school).

Speaking of good pick ups, any one else notice how good Jorge Julio has been since coming to the Rockies? and how he and Hawkins have stabilized the bullpen?  These are both quality relievers, but I think they've been asked to do more then they really could in the past, but as set up guys they look GREAT!

Kentrail Davis
He's going to Tennessee if he doesn't sign, but the team's probably told Boras that they intend to discuss things towards the end of July. At the very least, the club has submitted the framework for the minimum minor league deal that all teams submit if they wish to sign a player. If they haven't and fifteen days pass, he won't become a free agent since that loophole was fixed after the '96 draft.

My Guess....
Is that if any deal were to happen, it wouldn't be until the August 15th deadline.

I think MLB is the big driver on this one.  With the slotting system, if you're going "above-slot" on someone, you generally wait until the deadline to deal with the MLB front office

I'll agree with this,
but once the trade deadline passes it would appear reasonable to start sending out signals about negotiating.

I've been asking for Barrett
for weeks now, so I'm glad he's on the radar.  I don't see how he can be worth too much to Cubs if they continue to trot Koyie Hill out there to catch twice a series.

I think the two minor leaguers you named are our biggest trade chips.  The recent success of Deduno and the hard charging of Reynolds and Hynick can make up for any loss of Jimenez, and it's doubtful we'll be opening up any roster spot for Koshansky in the next year or two.

My current wishlist includes:  offensive catcher, number three starter, left handed bench player.  If we go after these things now, yet still crumble by the deadline, we can still move our biggest assets like Fuentes and come out with a net gain.  The point is this team is on the cusp of being better than above average, and putting patches on a few holes could give this team contender status (and the gate revenue it brings) through September.

I Agree totally
all the points you made I totally agree with.

Also what is scary is we seem to be on the same page almost all the time now.
