Around SBN: The Ten Worst Swings Of The 2011 Season

Game #116: Ian Stewart's debut

Josh Fogg vs. Rich Hill.

The Rockies will need to win this one, and it would be nice to see Ian with a big game his first night out. Rich Hill is a tough left-hander, but if Stewart's AAA season has taught us anything, it's that he hits lefties better than you would expect, and that he does well in Colorado. Maybe this will work out well for us after all.

Go Rockies!

Agreed
if they ever got more size options on those in online store, I may have to break down and finally get a personalized authentic.  Can't decide on the player, though.

by David OhNo on Aug 11, 2007 6:09 PM MDT up reply actions

What player is the reason
why I haven't gotten an authentic jersey.  Tulowitski appears he may be around for awhile.  I'd get Kaz if he resigns, or Holliday, or Atkins...but all 3 may be gone.  Helton is too obvious choice.

Not only do we need to halt our miniskid, but LA and SD have already lost...excellent opportunity to make up some ground.

What's the deal with
Rockies pitchers and 2 outs?  I'm sure our pitchers give up more 2 out hits and walks, then any team in baseball.

both called strikes were out of the zone (AG says).

Hurdles should have had a brief conversation after that one.  With Fogg getting no help, Hill doesn't deserve any either.

by David OhNo on Aug 11, 2007 6:33 PM MDT up reply actions

It seems to be a big
strike zone.  Fogg's got a couple calls too. The last k/curve to Hawpe looked high and inside, but with the TV camera in left/center, it's hard to tell on TV.

Past due
It is great to finally see him be able to use his superior athleticism in the field.

No one expected his transition to be effortless or without growing pains but last year it sure seemed like he had stalled out in terms of improving out there.

This year he has definitely shown marked signs of improvement.

Appreciating Helton
After taking a few throws from Tulo, I think that Garrett might have an enhanced appreciation of Helton at first base.

AG says both called strikes were balls
I'm not angry at these as I was in the Blue Jays game, but I'm starting to get annoyed by this zone.

by David OhNo on Aug 11, 2007 7:26 PM MDT up reply actions

Noticeably bad
Watching the game it is an odd and inconsistent strike zone.  Heck, in the car the KOA broadcasters were complaining about a postage sized strike zone in the first inning.

Seems to be a big strike zone now.

by MADness on Aug 11, 2007 7:30 PM MDT up reply actions

I'm thumbing between MLB.tv and AG
just when I see a borderline or quesitonable strike call, and the umps accuracy has to be pretty low for expectations.  Below 90% correct I'd assume is a bad day for an umpire, and I would think this guy is below that.

by David OhNo on Aug 11, 2007 7:44 PM MDT up reply actions

Not intentional
Both hit batsmen were clearly unintentional.

That said, that pitch that hit Baker was about as violent and scary as it gets.

Not only did he have zero time or ability to move but that ball went right up into him so fast that you can hardly flinch even watching the video before it hits him.

It looked like Marquis threw the pitch from 40 feet out instead of 60 feet.

A fitting reward for Fogg as well
the first inning was embarrassing, but he didn't let the game snowball and put the team in a position to beat this tough left hander.

No guarantees we keep it, but a 4+ run lead is all you can ask for.

by David OhNo on Aug 11, 2007 7:47 PM MDT reply actions

He isn't bad
Even if you wish that the Rockies had 5 starters who were better than Fogg it is hard to fault what he does - he goes out and pitches as well as his talent  will let him and he pitches intelligently and with an agressive attitude and eats innings and gives the team a chance to win.

by MADness on Aug 11, 2007 7:50 PM MDT up reply actions

The problem is that as constructed
the Rockies can't have a number five starter.  Without a real stopper, or even a prototype number two, they need five prototype three or fours to make up for the top.

This doesn't matter for the rest of 2007, and Fogg shouldn't go anywhere for the remainder of this season anyways.  But looking forward, if he is a part of our 2008 plans, the FO hasn't done its part to upgrade the rotation.

by David OhNo on Aug 11, 2007 7:54 PM MDT up reply actions

Totally agree
I totally agree and I was sort of trying to avoid rehashing it all again but you state it so much better than I do so it all works out.

He is a good number 5 starter.

If you had an ace or two at the front of the rotation and had Fogg as your fifth starter you would be in great shape.  The Rockies can't acquire that true shutdown pitcher via trade or free agency so they need to find other spots in the rotation to make up the slack.

Chairman of the Sub-committee to resign Kazuo Matsui

by Redhawk on Aug 11, 2007 7:57 PM MDT up reply actions

Interesting sub to leave Carroll
in for Stewart, but I'd imagine that Carroll's glove and major league experience on defense are paramount to saving the lead over giving Stewart more opportunities to record his first major league hit.

All in all, he should feel satisified with his debut.  He took two balls hard the other way against a tough lefty, fielded everything his way, and still helped keep the big rally alive.

by David OhNo on Aug 11, 2007 7:58 PM MDT reply actions

Can't argue
I can't argue with leaving Jamey in late in a game for defensive purposes, no matter how good the rookie third might eventually be.
