Tuesday Morning Rockpile: Jorge Julio Should Wear A New Shirt

Jorge Julio's choice of a shirt proclaiming "27 Outs ... No More" should be thought over after last night's performance. That outing led to some question about the exclusion of Jeremy Affeldt. To which Hurdle replied that Affeldt needed the break for all the work he's done this season. If that alone was the response, there probably would be something else beneath that, but with his other post-game comments it does make a bit more sense. Or Hurdle is a bad bullpen manager. You could go with either, I guess.

-----

The three position players the Rockies are sending to the AFL are Christian Colonel, Corey Wimberly, and Dexter Fowler. Colonel's a mild surprise, but I guess the Rockies do want to see what he can do against the level of competition the AFL provides. The AFL is more of a hitter's league and Ken Harvey was the MVP in 2002.

Homerderby.com continues with their MLB Mascot Brackets. Dinger's turn is up, and he's facing San Fran's Crazy Crab.

My thoughts exactly
Is there anyone (possibly older than 8) watching home games on TV that is not completely annoyed by Dinger standing behind home plate in the 9th inning?

hurdle is an idiot
if he isnt fired after this year it might be very tough to follow this team next year cause of all the mismanagement of talent and everybody sees it.... stadium employees, fans, oppsiite teams ( belive me they all say he is an idiot), us, why doesnt odowd and the monfort brothers see it?

Exactly
It's really sad when the first thought that popped in my head yesterday after I heard that the Astro's fired Purpura and Garner, who were both under contract until 2008 after they had taken the Astros to the World Series two years ago, while O'Dowd and Hurdle got 2 year contract extensions when they had not had a winning season in their tenure when they got their extensions! Are you kidding?

should the Julio experiment be over?
He's been good, yeah, but seems like he's best when he has a lead. So as long as he comes in and there's a lead it's fine...

I'm with so many others - I want Hurdle out. For good.

Went to the game on sunday...was bundles of fun. Unfortunately I don't know if I can go to a whole lot more this season, so it's kind of sad...that means I'll have to actually concentrate on schoolwork. Yuck.

Go Rockies!!! Anxious to watch Morales tonight!

Usually respect Ringolsby but....
"The home run, though, didn't cloud Hurdle's decision-making in the seventh..."

This seems like a kiss-up job to me.

In the previous paragraph to the above quote, Ringolsby is touting how Hurdle played Hawpe because of the park "nuances".  Then Hurdle makes him bunt because of a history of strikeouts against lefties with men at 1st and 2nd with no outs.  I am sorry, but park nuances don't influence strikeouts, so either he's good to go or he isn't!  Brad earned a chance to get the ball out of the in field.

To take rely on your 8th spot and a rookie to drive in the runs with no one out is bad strategy.  Not only is it bad strategy, but it insults Hawpe after he has delivered the only offense of the game.

I think Ringolsby
Likes the strategy of the sac bunt.  He'll reference the Rox '95 season (if memory serves) when the Rox lead the league in runs scored, and also led the league in sac bunts.

I think there's a place for the sac bunt in limited circumstances, but not on the road in a tie game in the seventh inning with two runners on, no outs, and the bottom of the order coming up.  In this case, Hawpe's bat represented the best possibility of putting together a big inning  (don't we want big innings?).  And as was pointed out before, lefties have his relatively well against Zito this year.
